After reading Xander’s thread “So where does everybody live?” I see he has a Snuff Mill Road. Well here just outside Hull in the UK we have a village named Cottingham and it has a Snuff Mill Lane. As a kid that grass strip on the left was a beck and the house (marked with the red dot) had a water wheel iI can’t remember it ever turning, see the first picture attached. But I’m sure that was the snuff mill at some time. I tried to check out with a local historian, but he could not find any records and didn’t even know about the water wheel! The metalled road stopped at that house and the rest of the lane was a dirt track, the houses with the parked cars was build in recent years.
I have a Snuff Mill Road near me as well. One road down from it is Burnt Mill Road…so there might have been a tragedy at the snuff mill! I drove past it everyday when I was working in Wilmington, DE, and I always meant to stop and take a picture of it, but that never happened. Fact still remains…I have one as well. =] ~Snuffy
Oh shit, I just actually read his post. Turns out we are talking about the same road. That is insane. ~Snuffy
Lol small world! Interesting anyway.
LOL indeed. We have a lot of “Mill” Roads in this area. The combination of 4 creeks and a harbor on the Delaware river made this area an early manufactuting center. In addition to Snuff and Burnt Mill roads, we have Paper Mill, Powder Mill, Rolling Mill, Barley Mill Roads. These are just off the top of my head. We also have a Super Fine Lane named for the old sugar mill that made “Super Fine” Sugar. Anyway, nice to meet you neighbor. I wish I was more technically saavy or I’f get a picture of Snuff Mill Road for you guys and even a picture of the old mill. The mill is on the national register of historic places, so might already be a photo online. I’m sure an aerial view like Snuff Head’s is available on Google Earth. Btw, Snuff Head, My wife has taken to calling me “snuff head”. I thought of you when she did! Hope you don’t take offense (or sue).
@ Xander No offense, your wife has good taste Snuff Head is a nice name!
