Does your love for snuff make you remember your first experience with it? Where you bought it and how it made you feel? I remember mine and I was in Faders tobacconist store walking past the pipe smoking gents, headed directly to the humidor to pick up some cigars and noticed a new display that had “President Snuff” on it. I got myself 5 Dunhill cigars and came out and just had to ask what this snuff was. The gents started taking turns in between puffs to explain how it was nasal snuff, how strong it was and how addictive. I remember that most because the one gent said “It’s the most addictive tobacco there is” The only thing they didn’t explain was the way to properly sniff it. I bought 2 boxes and went to my truck to experience this new product (to me that is) I tapped a small amount into my hand and gently caught the scent. I remember the menthol as if doing it now. I took that amount and snorted it up quickly and made my eyes water and felt like I had just got a rush of pure nicotine (man was that first blast strong) I lived about an hours ride home and kept taking small snorts every 20 minutes to give me that charge. I kept on buying it up until joining this forum when I learned about the American Scotches and how to mix and sniff properly. I liked snuff before but love snuff now What about you? Did someone share it with you? Did a older brother hold you down while his friends shoved it up your nose? Did you sneak it from Dad or maybe stole it from a bum?
tobacco tavern state college pa. Was trying everything pipes cigars diffrent cigs chews. Then they got some dean swift so me and three of my friends each got one tin went to the library and just get snuffing and laughing our asses off cause it was so damn good. Oh I was 16 and they sold to me cause they could tell my parents would kick my ass not theirs if I got caught (sharp of them to notice that).
I was about 11/12 years old and the Wilson’s blue tins of snuff were all the craze at my school. I remember taking the snuff first in my bedroom and lying back on the bed feeling an intense, lovely high. I continued to use snuff until. My mum caught me due to brown hankies. I didn’t cover my tracks very well
I was in my 40’s before I tried it
I also went into Smoker Friendly to buy cigars and was ‘arrested’ if you will by a new display, in this case was Packard’s Club. And I thought What the heck. Asked the person behind the counter (was going to say Tobacconist but that would be VERY generous) what it was and how to use. They had absolutely NO idea. I had heard about snuff from my interest in tobacciana, but had never tried myself or ever known anyone who had. Just like @MatteFox states above the first hit was just that, a big hit. If you have never used Packard’s Club, it has a very unique delivery system, sort of a premeasured amount that comes out on a little lever. Whew, I LOVED it. Came back later and by then they had obtained Poschls apricot, president and spearmint. Of course, I got some and was very happy for sometime until they pulled everything off the shelf. Then I went into semi depression until I discovered Mr. Snuff surreptitiously. Am very happy with things now. Had absolutely NO IDEA there was such a big world out there of wonderful, glorious snuff.
My nephew’s wedding in Memphis. My eustachian tubes had been blocked for 9 months and snuff drained them in a day!
15 years old in a classroom in junior high. An acquaintance had some Ozona Raspberry, a matter of days later I bought some Poschl Sam Gawith Apricot at the uptown tobacco shop.
I was on holiday and staying with my fiancee’s family for the lunar new year. We exchanged gifts, mainly sweets and vodka, took a few shots, and then her father offered me his snuff bottle and initially I had no idea what it was. They urged me to smell it, so I did. It was Six Photo Special. I asked them if it would be okay if I could actually take the stuff out of the bottle and smell it, so my fiancee’s father showed me how to snuff using the spoon. I was instantly hooked. I kept on asking for the bottle every 20 minutes or so. By the end of the night, the fiancee and I were sitting down taking turns with the spoon and watching TV (she mainly snuffs to sneeze and I don’t know how she does it, but she can sneeze pretty much on any given pinch). The combination of being drunk and snuffing was incredible. The next time I visited them, they gave me a little tiny snuff bottle as a gift and I gave my soon-to-be father-in-law a 200g tub of Super Chetak. Speaking of which, the holiday is just around the corner, and this time around I’m giving the dad a tin of SG Toffee and McC’s Supermint.
i was searching for smokeless tobacco on the net and i found old snuffboxes. I wondered if any snuffs on the local market. I asked some shops and they adviced me an attar. Luckily he has gletcherprise. I was running out of tobacco for two days and i didn’t want to smoke. I bought it and the first sniff was like a heaven. I was impressed how nicotine reached to my brain that fast.
Yes, I remember. She was 15 and I was 13. She had blonde hair and smelled like she just had a cigarette. We went to the…oh. you said SNUFF experience. sorry.
Damn, I wanted to read that story lol
And I wanted to finish it. lol. Ah well, she prolly went on to marry some rich guy, and had 2.4 kids…
or got really fat
I mean really
@bob Are you saying you stole @ad_noseum girl and now you want to return her because she is really fat? (laughing, please laugh with me)
I was about 16 and had some dried out rolling tobacco my dad had gotten from a tobacconist. Pretty sure it was primarily Virginia tobacco. I ground it up and sniffed it out of curiosity and loved the effect, much more stimulating than smoking. A couple of years later I got into ordering snus on the internet and that got me into snuff.
Wassat got to do w/ my really fat girlfriend that Bob stole?
hey it was a trade and don’t pretend it wasn’t
This place will make me laugh every day
Had my first snuff in my bedroom by myself, fortunely. I couldnt stop sneezing and coughing. Indian was not the best first choice…
I did a pinch of O&G and snorted it as hard as I could. Needless to say, I sneezed like crazy and didn’t see the appeal.
I was 19 and a few of my cigar buddies thought we would give it a try. It was Garrett Scotch and we all hit it at the same time and all took it way to hard. After 30 minutes of coughing and sneezing and making sure the back of our skulls were still attached we tossed the can out.
First snuff I remember was a good sniff of Gletscher prise at age of 15- it was souvenir from Germany, just before a soccer match in summer 1978, and it was absolutely great like any tobacco product I have ever tried.
It was around 2005-2006 either me or a friend at work came across snuff online and he ordered a variety of different ones. Once we got them I remember doing small amounts and snorting it hard. We enjoyed it but I think because the amount each time was so small we didn’t really feel an effect and eventually stopped doing it.
Grade school…yes 5th or 6th grade believe it or not. A friend got into his grandpops stash and brought a few tins[have no recollection of what brand or flavors]to school with him.We snuffed in the bathrooms a few times and then we got rather gutsy and started doing it[discretely]at our desks…that was until we got caught after a few days.Soon after I began smoking cigarettes and never gave snuff a second thought until just recently[Im in my early 40s now]I quit smokes a few years ago with the help of dip, like Copenhagen and Stokers.Unfortunately the dip has begun to damage my gums, mostly the dentist says I need a deep cleaning and to get off the dip and all will be fine. Well me being one who doesnt give up easily on something I love dearly[like nicotine]I couldnt help but think back fondly to those first few times snuffing…and well, here I am shopping daily on MrSnuff, checking in daily to SnuffHouse and I have almost cut out the dip entirely.
No, it was 1971. I do remember offering some to my cousin and he got loud and told my father I had drugs. I tried to explain but got whipped any how. It was manufactured in france but the tin was from Phila pa. The label said coke snuff. I don’t recall the scent but when I tried Poschl Snuffy Weiss it triggered this memory. They sold Levi garrett in the pharmacy on the regular shelf with chewing tobacco, rolling tobacco and pipe tobacco , I was a fan of redman loose leaf at that time and started with cigarettes to hide the smell of the maryjane of the times.
It was those little blue tins of J&H Wilson’s snuff that used to be in all newsagents back in the 1970’s. Tried SPNo.1, and I loved it straight away. Same with the Medicated No. 99 and then Top Mill. I must’ve been using tiny pinches though (back of the hand in those days) as I can’t usually take any mentholated snuff, and don’t remember even ending up with brown hankerchiefs. I was in my teens, and mum and dad were ok with it, mum even said if it helped my breathing then it was a good thing.
if basements_shamens coke snuff experience counts then I recant and state pixie sticks oh pixie sticks.
I love pixie sticks too! As a matter of fact, I was thinking of one project that the snuff smells like “Cotton Candy”
if basements_shamens coke snuff experience counts then I recant and state pixie sticks oh pixie sticks.
at tech school I was chopping up some pixie stick at the lunch table ,some dummy’s had bugged me for a line and came back with a jackson for a more. pixie dust. I think it was lime flavored. Oh youth is wasted on the young
Yes, it was a painful huge pinch of toque quit. It was glorious.
Walked in to my local Smoker’s Haven for some pipe tobacco and decided to ask them if they had any snuff which I had read about for years in old books and had recently discovered was still being manufactured. They only had three or four kinds. In my ignorance I passed up the two or three kinds of 10g tins of Toque for the 35g tube of Dental Sweet (figured I’d get more for my money). Soon as I got home I opened it and took a whiff…wonderful smokey scent, golden brown. I took a very small pinch very hesitantly, not knowing what to expect. HALLELUJAH! I was in love with snuff immediately. I still love Dental Sweet and other American scotches but I wish I had tried Toque sooner because it quickly became my standard go to brand.
My first encounter was W.E. Garrett Sweet.
16, my smoker friends gave me some Apricot snuff. Didn’t like it. It took 10 years for me to try it again and it has been love ever since.
Ground up some dried rolling tobacco when I was like 16 or 17 and sniffed it. It didn’t smell great but I really enjoyed the stimulating lift it gave me. My first proper snuff was Poschl Gletscherprise IIRC but I was more into snus at that time and wasn’t very impressed. I don’t remember how I got into proper snuff.
Looking to get away from cigarettes, read a bit online and went to a pipe shop here in Raleigh and picked up Gawith Apricot in a tap box and some SM 500 in a smash box. Enjoyable from the first sniff… Ken
My first time really enjoying snuff was just over a year ago when I quit smoking. I got some scotches locally but I remember when I got my first Mr Snuff order 3 tins of potluck 6 Photo Special were included and upon trying that I was hooked. To this day that snuff can still make me feel so good no matter what kind of mood I am in.
It was January, and it was a mind freezing pinch of McCrystal O&G.
I remember seeing large glass jars of snuff at the grocery store when I was a kid. I always wondered what is was and how it was used. When I was maybe 15, I saw a news report on a 100 year old woman that used Sweet Snuff everyday of her life since she was like 10 or so. When they showed her she was an impressive elderly black women and had a can of Garrett Sweet and was dipping her finger in it and putting it in her mouth and sniffing it. My friend and I where into smoking cigars and cigarettes so we decided to find some snuff. We ended up with some Garrett Scotch snuff and we inhaled it vigorously. After we picked ourselves up off the floor we decided it was no fun but I kept the container. I would try it here and there every so often until it was gone one day. Never used it after that but thought about it often. In about 99’ or 2000 I found a website I could order snuff from and was surprised by the variety. I was into Poschl’s line and became a Gletscher Prise fiend. I would even roll it into cigarettes and other rolled type things ;-). I was a regular snuffer until about 03’ when I went off to the navy and quit using it beacuse sniffing things onboard my ship was frowned upon. I went to a shore command and eventually found Rooster and was hooked again(God I miss that stuff). Been a regular since I quit smoking.
Around May 2006 I was deployed to Qatar, “The Deed” where we were allowed three drinks a night. I had just returned from a convoy mission to Afghanistan and planned to get trashed on bourbon, but some British gentlemen convinced me to fill my three drinks into a 2 liter bottle with vodka. After an hour of sipping on the bottle, one of them pulled out a tin of snuff, where curiosity made me take a pinch. Man, I was trashed that night!!
Rather boringly my first experience was in the car on the way back from my favourite tobacconists in Manchester (A short sharp blast of Red Bull that really cleared my nose ) I feel I have rather made up for this though in the bizarre locations and situations in which I have introduced a fair number of folks to this wonderful habit !!!
I don’t remember the very first time, but 30 years ago a priest gave me a few grams of SG Black Rappee, when he saw that I liked it, I don’t remember when he first let me try it, but I do remember him giving me a few grams, I think about 10g
I was 16 years old and working stocking shelves in a convenience store. The store had a very decent selection of tobacco and carried a few different types and flavors of snuff. I was intrigued by the cool looking tins and since I was not old enough to buy it I am not proud to say that a tin “fell into my pocket”. I don’t remember what brand or flavor it was. But I do remember that it was a tap box that had a built in little container where the snuff would stay when you opened it and you could snuff directly from that container. I knew that snuff was meant to go into your nose, but I thought it was supposed to be snorted and not sniffed so the first time I tried it it really hurt and was quite unpleasant so I decided it wasn’t for me. I didn’t snuff for well over a decade until I tried it again the correct way and now I am absolutely in love with snuff. Does anyone know is those tap boxes with the built-in snuff collector still exist? I haven’t seen any since and I would really like to try one again.
^ Packard’s Club, perhaps?

Quite a few of the Poschl snuffs come in dispenser containers.
I’ve had a few poschl containers like red bull, president, apricot etc. The one I’m talking about was the same shape but had a little flap that pulled out of the side near the bottom and it was like a little snuff drawer that you could sniff without tapping any out into your hand.
still sounds like Packard’s Club (a Pöschl snuff) although the little drawer is open top and bottom to allow dumping the snuff on your hand. The drawer is spring loaded.
My first snuffing experience was as a pre-teen. We were all playing out in the hills by my childhood home, making a den in the woods, and one of the boys (I forget the names sadly) pulled out a tin of his dad’s McChrysals medicated JIP. I remember being told it was tobacco, although it obviously wasn’t a cigarette or cigar that I’d encountered previously, the older lads used the lid of the tin to scoop it out onto the back of their hands and then snuffed it up. I was kind of curious so when it came my way I just copied what they had done. A [too] deep sniff later, a lot of coughing, sneezing and watery eyedness later; much to the amusement of the othe lads I was OK again

Great article! I love to read stories like that. Thanks.
Back in the late '70s I worked in a tobacco shop. We received a box of glass jars of Dunhill Menthus Plus by mistake with an order from our Dunhill distributor. Sort of similar to Wilson’s SM Blue. It was not love at first sniff, (head exploded) but I stuck with it and got to enjoy it.
Not at all. Like many, I wasn’t sure about what I was doing, so I snapped all that menthol and camphor all the way back to behind my eyeballs. Painful. But when I sniffed the jar, it smelled so wonderful, that I had to keep trying. Next of course was using too small a pinch (guaranteed to make you sneeze), but I eventually got the hang of it.
My first experience with snuff was when I was about ten. I went to one of those historical mining town recreation places in Victoria, Australia, at a former coal mine. Or was it gold? No, coal I think. Anyway, back in the 1970s, they were selling little tins of some snuff, and I bought a few and turned all the kids in fourth grade onto it, until my mother staged an intervention and confiscated the lot.
I was buying a package of Starr chewing tobaccy when my eye landed on levi garret which seems to be the only snuff readily available in San Antonio. 15 minutes later I got snuff bombed in my car. Lol
When I was a kid I remember reading a child’s storybook in which one of the characters took a pinch of snuff before he did anything. What’s snuff, I asked my mum, and she said it was powder you stuck up your nose. Euurgh, I thought. Many many years later I found myself working in a bonded warehouse sorting out tobacco orders for convenience stores. My bit of the process included the snuff, which was the standard J&HW that you used to find in newsagents’ and tobacconists’ up and down Great Britain. I’d never seen any, and thought it was like white fluffy stuff. Nearer the present, sick and tired of cigarettes and the awful hacking cough I had in the mornings (not to mention the hole in my wallet), I started to think of an alternative, based on the idea that I was happy with being a nicotine addict, it was simply the delivery system that was the wrong choice. Having heard a friend who had used snuff in the past talking about it one night in the pub, I thought “what the hell, let’s see what this is all about”, and after a bit of research bought a couple of tins of S’nuff direct from McChrystal’s. I needed a dispenser, I figured, so I got one of those bullets that actually looks like a bullet. I still remember the excitement of that first time - I got home from the pub, having consciously smoked all the cigs I had on me so there was no going back, opened a tin (what a smell! Gorgeous!), unscrewed the bullet and spooned snuff in until I was sure I’d filled it. Then came the test…of course I had absolutely no idea how to take it, so I just stuck the bullet up one nostril, pinched the other one shut, and inhaled. After I’d got up off the floor, having found my eyeballs rolling round the carpet and put them back in my head, and made sure a) the back of my skull was still attached, and b) my nose was in one piece, I wiped my watering eyes and said to myself, “well, mate, this is how it’s gonna be from now on, so you’d just better get used to it!” How I’ve learned since then!
