Do you like…

A

this stuff?

A

or prefer the old look of the site

B

yea

A

Ok Bob, I’ll keep it then.

Welcome to the new look Snuffhouse folks,

C

Yeah, this is better!

B

I like it. Adds a modern feel. If modern is 2002. lol
 Nice job.

K

Better for me. How about fixing the search function?

S

absolutely!

S

We are progressing :bz

A

I’m glad you like it :-)

The search function - alas - is not just a question of finding something in the bowels of the site that I can click on - for that certain elements need to be re-built. At some point in the next year I will.

@bigmick ‘if modern is still 2002’ - don’t you know the war is still on in England? Pigs trotters only came off ration last week.

A

How about a nice light theme?

D

It’s cleaner, I’ll give you that.  Similar to the iOS interface iirc.

C

It’s ok, just need to change the “S” up top… looks very out of place

A

Or?

C

This one is nice

A

Maybe we’ll give it a couple of days - if people don’t like I’ll just change it back

A

I have to say this one grows on you, especially in pitch black England…

D

Stoney…

T

I have to agree with Cstokes, design yourself a new snuff house logo or, if you like I’d be willing to sponsor a competition for the best new design?

T

Oops, I forgot to say I love the new look!

C

I’ve messaged one over to Nigel.

D

I vote for a competition!

*rubs hands together maniacally in anticipation of shenanigans*

C

Nigel, did you also change the font?  I like it!

P

Oh my god what’s happened?  OOurrghh this is different. DIFFERENT!

I lke it.

M

I always thought the discussions should be narrower so you can put supporter shop ads on both side and fit more in.

M

Looking good folks!

E

I was having such a hard time navigating the site that I couldn’t find this thread, so I started my own.
Sorry about that, but frankly, this design sucks on ice for me.

B

I think I like it. It’s a little harder to navigate, but  I’ll trade that for better functionality.
8->

C

Not sure why it’s harder to navigate?  It’s just about the same layout.

S

this is certainly a nice clean look … and bright … i am digging this.

i am not sure why this “sucks on ice” … it’s different, but really … the same … is there anything particular that is difficult, elwin?

N

Looks great!
My only thought is to put the topics back on the left hand side.
Not sure why It feels weird.
Maybe something to do with reading left to right?
What ever…
Again, I like the new look.

N

strange, it’s not letting me edit my old post.

D

I feel like Anglefire is back…

Ken

S

I like it. Much easier on the eyes for me.

S

Much prefer the old look, but that might just be because change is jarring.

Any chance you could switch the side bar to the right? It felt better over there… I guess it’s just kind of odd starting reading from 1/3rd across the page.

S

I like the new look much better than the old. Easier to read.

The only thing I don’t like is that the threads are panned to the right. I found the posts easier to scan when they were panned to the left.

EDIT: Yeah, like Spam said!

N

I like the new look, the only problem is I can’t write posts on my phone its like my phone doesn’t recognize it as a text box 8-X

P

I have to agree that this format is much easier to read.  I haven’t had time to fully investigate other features yet, but my first impression is a good one.

S

I’ll have to cast another dissenting vote.  Light themes suck for me.  They’re just extra bright and hurt my eyes to look at.  Plus, with everything else having a dark theme on my computer it wrecks the overall consistency.  Also, agree with others on the placement of text being kind of wonky.  Since I seem to  be in the minority though on hating light themes (Gah, my eyes!  They bleed!), might I petition for an option in member preferences to switch themes?  Just have two options, this and the old looking, and I would much appreciate it.  Don’t know if it’s possible on this type of forum.

T

@n9inchnails to post on your phone press the sheet of paper with the two red arrows first. I am doing this on my phone so I know it works.

A

It’s not 1997 anymore? >:-)

E

I can handle the white (though it’s not my favorite), and I do appreciate the text editing features.
I guess it’s just that for me it feels scrunched up.
I mean I’m sitting here with a wide screen monitor, and I’m wondering why I’m only using the center 1/3 of the screen?
I guess the other thing is the relatively larger gaps between posts. It just feels like wasted space that takes more scrolling to scan to the bottom of the page.
I know those are fairly petty complaints, but what can I say? I’ll take ease of use over ‘bling’ any day.

L

I really prefer this layout, rather I haven’t accessed the site for a long time before now…

S

This is so strange!!! But, now that I have the ability to do funky things, I’m going to underline all the important  things! STRIKETHROUGH!!! So cool3!!! Down lowMuahHAHA!!!

N

we need an emoticon of a face taking a pinch!

;))

W

Sorry folks, I don’t like it at all, I’ve had internet problems for the last 10 days, been a bit on and off, logged on now and I’m like WTF??? I’ll get used to it, but when you’ve been used to one format nearly 4 1/2 years, it’s certainly different.

Stefan

N

@theratroom thanks that was the problem, it works now. :bz

T

@n9inchnails glad to help.

T

I liked the color scheme of the old version better.  Not a fan of bright colors.

X

Hurts my eyes too.  Also the text appears very slowly when  type in the comment box.  The added features are ok, but overall I prefered the elegant smplicity of the prevous version.

P

Since we should be honest, i have to admit that i dont like the new look at all. Was totally confused at first sight and tought: “Damn, they got some error!” XD Well, it isnt a error at all but unfortunatly totally not my cup of tea.

K

I would also prefer a darker theme, as it is easier on my eyes.
[-O<
P.S First time I have ever used an emoticon.

G

The coat of the site is more clear, more appaisant, nice metamorphosis

Thanks for your hard work you’ve done for this site, Snuffster but, I must be candid and say that I’m not a fan of this new theme, I’m afraid.
The gray “grunge” background is too busy and it doesn’t help readability at all. The button backgrounds are just odd. Stylewise this looks about 7-8 years old. Boxy. The comments font is too small. Also, I’d rather see sans-serif.
Some of the new posting features are very welcome improvement; hyperlinks, pics, bold , italic, underline, strikethrough and lists will make posting easier, and when done right helps readability.
Now, what will not help readability is giving users too many crayons. See what I mean?

J

(I’ll add some stuff because it was cut off by the fecking smileys. Also, the paragraphs seem to have huge padding.)

People will use these useless features just because they are there. This will make any site gaudy and jumbled.

I have learned to accept that those animated smileys are the way many even literate adults now communicate, but luckily they can often be turned off in users preferences. Not sure if this is possible here.

(Edit: Found a way to get rid of the blinking smileys locally with Adblock Plus_, so no complaints there from me anymore. I do understand that I’m in the very small minority in disliking them.)_

Like I said, not a fan.

A

Right, listen guys!!!

a. stop messing it about go straight back to the old site you weazel!!

b. nice to see Snuffhouse at least paying lipservice to the 21st century, try a few more and we’ll vote!!

c. keep this, Ive happily/begrudgingly gotten used to it and with winter coming and my sad gettin bad…

Snuffster

Dorm Prefect

S

snuffster … i think you got it … even better, very clear, and the highlighted “new” indicator in the threads really helps.

S

crap … this just flipped back to old stuff … between this post and last.  dang.

J

Cheers! My SAD just got slightly better.

A

Hey listen, I haven’t developed a bucket of skills Im just using some part of the site in making pre-set changes, its the website equivalent of changing fonts. Im not going to do anything that will make any permanent chages.

E

Uh Oh… Am I having a flashback?
The 60’s were very good to me, but what the heck?

J

“Hey listen, I haven’t developed a bucket of skills Im just using some part of the site in making pre-set changes, its the website equivalent of changing fonts. Im not going to do anything that will make any permanent chages.”

Ok, understood. Thanks again for your hard work, Snuffster!

E

Just do what ya gotta do.

Sometimes it sucks to be the king.
Or to quote from Mel Brooks:

Count de Monet: It is said that the people are revolting.
King Louis XVI: You said it! They stink on ice!

A

Thank you Elwin, oh how much that helps…

E

That me - just a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day.
Or was that a big drip in a thunderstorm?
I get those two confused…

F

I think that the dark is easier to read. Go figure. Aesthetically, either is fine but preference for dark.

M

like it.edm

M

well that didn’t work, lol.

S

Huzzah for the return (at least for now) of the good old theme!  Seriously, though, your work on the site is appreciated Snuffster.  I’d rather have someone actively trying to improve it, even if I don’t necessarily like the changes, than to see the site stagnating.  Is there any simple way of making a couple of presets and allowing the user to choose one in the preferences, or would that be a big pain to do?  If it’s doable, it would seem the easiest way to please the most people.

Also, sort of random observation, but I’ve noticed there seems to be an age divide on preference for light vs. dark themes.  Obviously it’s only anecdotal evidence, so should be taken with a healthy dose of doubt, but it seems like people above 40 or so seem to love light themes, and those in their mid-thirties and under seem to go for dark themes.  Oddly enough, both groups cite readability as a reason for their preference.  Just wondering if this generalization holds true on this board, or if the others I frequent a just filled with a bunch of anomalies.  I definitely fall into the younger camp, and prefer darker themes.

J

a few years ago a friend of mine was making a website and i showed him snuffhouse

because it was my favo(u)rite layout  colo(u)rs etc

T

YAY!  Smileys!

A

@shikitohno - I don’t even know what that means. As said, I am just clicking on a few pre-set themes, I have not become able to solve any of the shortcomings of the site. My web mastering skills are non existent but I will ask my friend snuffhead, who knows much more than me, to look at the issue you mention.

P

I’ll get used to it.

S

I like the light but it’s the content and atmosphere that are most important to me.

I’ll be happy either way

W

Better than yesterday Nigel, but whatever changes are afoot, oviously the majority wins.

Stefan

P

My years as a web site designer are behind me, and I don’t know much about this Vanilla software.  But it seems pretty sophisticated, and if there are preset formats, it would seem likely there would be a way for users to customize at least a few features to suit their own preferences.  Most web design packages these days have accessibility features built in, so that those with visual and other challenges can access the site – would there be something among those features we could use as a customizing tool?  Just a thought.

P

I love this much better.  Its much easier for these old eyes to see and the layout seems a lot friendlier.  I know I don’t post much here anymore but I do come here several times a day to read the posts.  Thanks

PP

T

To be honest I couldn’t give a dam. I only ever access the site on my phone so the only thing that has changed here is the emoticons.

J

Looks alright to me; I can work with it…

K

Lovely, nice to see the return of the dark theme.

A

Looks like we are sticking with this.

D

Bump.

Any more talk about competition?  Even if there aren’t prizes, it would be fun to get the info on what size you need and fire some designs your way.

ToqueToque November 16

I have to agree with Cstokes, design yourself a new snuff house logo or, if you like I’d be willing to sponsor a competition for the best new design?

K

How do I access all the little smileys and other characters? Any help please.

N

@kats

To the top right of the comment box you should see a small white smile face.

Click on it and you’ll see the emoticons.

B

H

For those of us who know HTML, it’s no problem…

Making a multiple line list wastes a lot of space for those who can’t go in and replace the source

s with <br>s; putting everything in a single string without any line breaks.

H

I would also like to see a delete function along with the edit function. If you end up with a duplicate or want to quietly rescind a statement, the writer could simply delete his own post.

K

@nightcap
Thanks   :O)

X

@howdydave The double posting phenomena has been with us since we moved to Vanilla.  The good news is that it is self correcting.  In other words, once you refresh the page, it disappears.

For deletes, mods have this power.  If you want a post removed, you can edit down to nothing and usually a mod wll come along and see a blank post and then delete it for tidyness.  Otherwise you can notify a mod through PM.
