Do you keep track of all the snuffs you have bought, acquired, or actually snuffed? Do you have a list somewhere of tasting notes or ratings? For me, I find it helpful to keep a record of all the snuffs I own and within that list I include and mark all those I have tried with a 1 to 5 rating after each one. I own many snuffs that I have not yet tried (I am not in a hurry to try them all as I take them at my leisure). I do not keep track of dates that I tried the snuffs or tasting notes or my impressions, just the ratings that also indicates that I have tried them. I am not saying that my method is particularly efficient because it is not. But there are so many snuffs out there I wonder how other snuff enthusiasts keep track of what they own and what they have tried, and if they keep notes or ratings. Do you do anything in particular–or do you just go by memory–or maybe you don’t think this is important? Whatever, I would be interested in your take on this. Thanks.
hmm, i might of any new snuffs, perhaps in an excel document. up to now i havent really bothered. its never struck me as important.
I assume most people here already know about ermTony’s page but here’s the link, just in case http://ermtony.pbworks.com/w/page/14871699/Snuff
I have enough trouble just organizing my business and simply don’t have the time to bother with record-keeping in other aspects of my life. Besides, I like surprises in my recreational life so, no, I don’t keep records.
Yes, that’s my way of keeping tabs on what I’ve tried and what I thought of it. Sorry to say I have quite a few to add and review though. Never seems to be enough time…
I only keep snuff that I like. but i do need to keep a record of the ones that clog me up. but where would I keep the list for I can find it? I had written reviews on snuffreviews and Mr.Snuff; but as experience show me some snuff from different batches have drastic changes, so reviews cannot be written in stone. I always wondered why when I was trying some snuffs, I was getting something different then what others had described, now I know they have changed. So keep records of nay is your choice :-?
No I dont I just remember what I like and dont like.
Never felt the urge to be honest. It just seems easier to replenish a stock of something I like when I run out, and make a mental note of ones not to bother trying again. That said I am currently working off a reduced spectrum of snuffs - predominantly British, I have only tried three from India, two from Poland, two from South Africa and none from Germany or America. I have tried a few from De Kralingse, but they were a bit too chunky for me and the tap boxes were a pain, although Latakia AO1860 was a very nice one. I want a snuff I can pinch, that doesn’t come in a tap box, and doesn’t choke me or fall out in chunks. The Indian snuffs I’ve tried are too messy to pinch, the Germans/Polish/Dutch tend to supply in tap boxes, and the American snuffs will probably have me doubled over coughing from what I can glean. There’s something for all tastes in the world of snuff, but my tastes seem to be catered for in these shores for the most part … and I’ve only just scratched the surface of those. No doubt I’ll broaden my horizons further at some point, but till then I just need to steer clear of menthol and toasts most of the time … and SG Apple :-& Strong florals are only used for a very occasional pinch anyway, so any one type would last me a long time … and I have a few, so I’ll not need to order any for ages. With tastes as simple as mine, there’s little need for notes
No I don’t,but it would probably be a good idea. Funny thing, I could barely tell you what ate for breakfast yesterday but I do remember what I thought of each and every snuff I have tried, who made it and where I purchased it. Tobacco O.C.D I guess youd call it.
I keep a journal entry of what kinds I have tried and rate them for specific occasions: Morning Motivation All day Evenings Night cap I am picky and will only repurchase a handful of what I’ve tried, though I will order some of @basement_shaman favorites. Ha.
I keep tabs of the snuffs that I´ve purchased in an Excel, otherwise they can get lost in the lower part the chest where they are piled. Whenever I feel like revisiting some of my less regular snuffs I just need to read that list, no need to move the entire collection.
Yes I keep very brief notes in an Excel file just in case I ever get round to writing some reviews.
Yes, I keep a database/spreadsheet type of record myself. It helps me keep track and includes reviews that I write for each. I currently have 420 entries in it and about 35-50 snuffs sitting in some boxes next to my desk awaiting some time for me to add and review them. There is no way I could keep track of all that in my head. My memory, though good, can be unreliable. Categories in my database are: Producer Snuff Name Style Country of Origin Date first tried Vendor (from which it was procured) Rating (from 0 to 5) Bulk? (asks me if I think its worthy of buying in bulk or if I have it on hand in bulk) Comment (for brief notes) Review (detailed review)
@xander Wow! Yours appears to be a very thorough database. I am also amazed at the number of snuffs you have tried! Remarkable! And I want to tell you that I enjoy reading your reviews on snuffreviews.com.
Thanks! but I’ve got nothing on @ermtony. His database is public and is his website, and a very comprehensive one it is!

Good point @basement_shaman. The variability and/or inconsistency of an individual snuff does complicate record keeping.
Scent is the sense which is most closely connected to memory.
I really wish that did keep some notes around on my various snuff experiences, I’m thinking with the new snuffs I sample from this point forward I will take notes on my first impressions in order to cross-compare with subsequent experiences with that same snuff.
I keep every record in my brain. It is the best database.
No. I did when I started but I remember what I like.
Nope… I just depend on my rusty and decrepit memory! Once I zeroed in on my 3 or 4 favorites, it wasn’t necessary.

Well, that makes sense! Good point @howdydave.
Haha, 3 or 4 favorites! That’s rich! I’d be happy if I could zero in on thirty or forty. :-j
ah, my whole working life is records-- so I leave snuff to be what it is for me-- a break from all these records – but I could see the point in it though
I realized when I bought my first batch of snuff that I needed to keep track of what I have purchased and have not, when I received it, and what I thought of the snuff using a 1-10 ranking, 1=bad, 10=good, pretty much anything under a 5 doesn’t get ordered again and ends up on the to-trade pile, and how much I paid for it. This came in handy recently with some order fulfillment issues where only part of a new order was shipped and the other part disappeared before it even made it to the shipping department. This also comes in handy for tracking which snuffs are mentholated. Most folks that wouldn’t be a problem, but the burn you feel when you go outside to a -33F with menthol in your nasal passage. First time it happened I said ‘oh, hell no!’ and went back inside for the rest of the day. I’ve got about another 4 months local before the menthol snuffs out of storage. =) I also use the spreadsheet to keep track of what is in the various bullets I have (~8). In most cases I won’t forget, but sometimes I try to work my way through a bullet fast, especially if I am not fond of the snuff and the others may get set aside for a while. Right now I’m showing over 150 different types of snuff in my pile. Some are the same flavor with a different vendor since it seems that the base tobacco used can make a significant difference on how much I like or dislike it. I’ve been able to use this to find that I like just about all the toque line and just purchase 25g tins now instead of 10g. I also found I don’t like tap boxes compared to the tins. Anyways, I’ve found it is always easier to have the information available and tracked. I know what is new, what I want to get next order I place, or to keep an eye out for in the trade threads.
Thank you @fool. How many of those 150 snuffs got a 10 rating? Just curious.

No 10’s yet. Four 9’s: RockIt Cherry Pop, Toque Chocolate and Vanilla, 6 Photo Kailash. I know as I’ve been working my way through them that the scores sometimes change up or down. I commit myself to at least a bullet worth before I make a determination since some, like the Ozona Orange with menthol, didn’t do a thing for me initially but grew on me after a couple of bumps. Ultimately I think some of the comments will be most useful as time goes on since during the summer time we have nasty wildfires locally, so a lot of ash and smoke in the air. Something like the 6 Photo Kailash would be real nice then to at least mask the wood smoke smell that invades everything.
