So, to stave off boredom and keep myself awake, I decided I was going to carve out a snuff spoon for myself. I headed down to the beach, and started looking at drift wood, and found I piece I thought would be suitable. Eventually, I was left with a stump too small to use because it kept snapping/splitting when I went to carve out the bowl of the spoon. Eventually, I gave up and went at another stick, with a bit more success. The result was slightly shorter than I intended, and the handle is a little split at the end, but it actually works okay. It might be a bit short, but it looks like it could actually reach down to the bottom of a medium tin of F&T, which is kind of why I wanted a spoon to begin with. A little bit sticks to it, since I have no sandpaper and couldn’t smooth the bowl out properly, but a bit of a sniff solves the problem. I now have two large blisters on my left thumb and index finger as a reward for my poor knife skills, but I’m actually pretty happy, as ugly as this thing is. Any one else try making their own snuff accessories?
Not got the patience or the skill, I buy all my stuff…
I haven’t attempted to fashion one myself, but have occasionally resorted to using the back end of some of my cutlery to spoon out Snuff. It doesn’t work too bad, other than looking a little undignified.
Here is a post with some of our homemade spoons. Snuff Spoons
Here are some I made a while back. I have made one more but I had about 6 of them that fell apart before I got them done. Here is a link: http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/1675/wooden-snuff-spoons-what-do-yall-know/#Item\\_8
Plastic collar stays are perfect and slip right into the wallet. They don’t break, can reach way down in snuff tubes and the pointy end is perfect for filling bullets. I doubt a better snuff spoon was ever made and if you insist on precious metals, they come in silver too.
I made a cool little spoon out of JB weld. It works great!
One day I was searching for something in my kitchen to use as a makeshift snuff spoon and discovered that an upside down plastic spoon/fork handle worked perfectly and measured the right amount of snuff. I cut off the spoon end and now have a 3 inch long snuff spoon that has been in use for 3-4 months at home. Away from home, I simply snuff off the back of my hand.
When I need a snuff spoon, I just use the flat part of a pipe nail. It works well, it costs 1 dollar, and is available at any tobacco store.
I stole Troutstroker’s plans and made a tiny snuff spoon (small enough to fit in the opening of a 10 gram Poschl’s box) out of a copper wire. It works but Trout’s is much prettier.
I’ve taken a regular nail and hammered the blunt end to make it flat. It works very nicely and requires no skill, and is dirt cheap to make.
@ donjorge: You are describing a home made pipe nail. I just pay the 89 cents at my local tobacco store and buy a pipe nail and use it for a snuff spoon.
I’ve realized that but I’ve never actually decided to buy a legit pipe nail for that purpose. I tend to just use my finger for tamping and if the shank needs some poking a wooden match works fine. I do have one of the cool vintage style reamers though. I’ve used alot of things as a snuff spoon before, even my keys. Any of you guys ever grown a snuff nail(as opposed to a coke nail)? It find it works well to use the back of your pinky nail as a snuff spoon.
heheh “snuff nail” i use a big red straw from Sonic. holding the straw horizontally, i cut off about an inch worth of the top half of the straw. leaving a 1/2 of the cylinder intact. looks pretty shady, but works liek a charm. took a woping 1 minute to construct with my trusty pocket knife.
Now being from Sonic; that’s just awesome. I can picture the commercial now: “Toque Coke and Lime Toast Blast. Sonic’s got it, others don’t.”
@wolfwood thats what you would call a “Survivor Snuff Spoon” I bet it works good. I will try it next time i go to sonic! Thx
What is even shadier is when you use a shortened straw to snort up some snuff. It is fun doing that in public. Doesn’t work great with dry snuffs, but really moist and mentholated stuff works like a charm that way.
Dammnit, now I want a Limeade!
I tend to use either a key that lying around the house, or a pocket knife i was able to sand down to be dull. Both work perfect!
A while back I bought a lot of 25 pipe nails on ebay for 5.00 hows that for a cheap snuff spoon. edm
I stole an idea from…i believe it was n9inch and use a czech pipe tool for a multipurpose snuff utensil…works awesomely!!!
Recently bent a paperclip into a pseudo-snuff-scoop and wrapped a piece of hemp twine around the handle for kicks. Works great for piling snuff into a snuff box.
I recently made this out of a really think piece of copper with files, hammers and metal snips
@Up_to_snuff Nice job on the spoons !!!
Not sure if this counts, but, for awhile I was using the plastic cap that covers the end of a disposable e-cigarette. While certainly lacking in ingenuity and craftsmanship, it was functional and worked out excellently for a while.
Jewelers screwdrivers
I too was planning to make my own. I often carve hawaiian hooks using cow bone i procure from pet store and carve down using dremal tool.
Here’s my spoon it’s made from mesquite using a dremel for the shaping. still need to bees wax it. it’s my little jack-ass and it stands.
I use an old mustard spoon, seems to do the trick.
I always have my pipe tool [German made] on me when out and about.looks simular to this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/121061492227?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&\\_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 except the end of the blade is square and the poker is ergonomically designed for maximum use. At home I use the stainless steel snuff spoon I got at Mr Snuff. https://mrsnuff.com/product\\_info.php?cPath=22\\_169&products\\_id=1538. DYI are awesome and satisfying for the energetic crowd and the artisan at heart.

Thats impressive!!! I plan on widdling one myself soon!
I got bored last night so here it is. Went with the standard shape bc I just used a pocket knife and sand paper
It’s made from Japanese Maple
I’ve been trying recently to carve some spoons or pipe tampers to little or no success, here’s a photo of what’s come out so far, some is beach finds some were just from sticks I’ve come across in the park whilst smoking a pipe.
The most useful is the one with the metal scoop on it, my favourite looking one is the drift wood with a gnarly end. On a related note a friend of mine who isn’t on the forum has started making snuff spoons, he turns them on his lathe and is sending me one to try out, looks like this:
It’s cherry wood and also serves as a tamper. He’s selling them now on Etsy if anyone is interested here. They are around $5 I think. A question I have is how can I make the spoon part more round when I only have knives and sandpaper? Cheers, Ben
I use a cuticle pusher but am in the market for a proper spoon of a similar size. Would prefer a posh silver spoon with a fire breathing dragon engraved upon it. Or maybe a nudie woman with big booby doos
I am using a wooden stirrer you get from coffee shops!

I still think these make awesome snuff spoons, and free too!
!I still think these make awesome snuff spoons, and free too! And I have found that they can be used most of the tap boxes too!
@WhATdIdUjUsTsNiFf thank you for the compliment.
here’s a simple one— if you look close, you can see where my son Ian (when he was only 6 years old-- he’s 14 now) carved a Bishop out of this little stick of Hazel nut tree— Henry Lauder’s Walking Stick, to be precise… Anyhow, got to needing a snuff spoon for my TPS Madras and White Elephant snuff(s)— so I carved a little one at the end. Not too spectacular, but has meaning given that Ian did this for me
This may be in the wrong thread but I can’t find the one where I heard this: I saw somewhere on the forum a mention of the green plastic coffee stirrers at Starbucks being great for a snuff spoon, so I picked one up today when I got my coffee. Other than that I always just use a pipe tool’s scraper.
A new one that I just started using, a chap stick canister that has been cleaned out (to not effect the aroma of the snuff). Use it to hold the snuff, utilized the cap to sniff. A two-in-one function, cheap, practical and one of the best ideas I have had in a while.
I just flattened the wide end of a bamboo chopstick from Chinese takeout and shortened it some. Works great.
This golf tee sat on my desk taunting me all through last winter, I finally went at it with a knife and made it a more useful tool for the season.
This is the kind of snuff spoon (or spatula, if you’d like to call it that) that I made by using sandpaper on an ice-cream stick. The box doesn’t qualify as a DIY, but just wished to share. It is a small plastic box in which I keep 3-4 grams of snuff. You can pinch it or take it with a spoon. Handy and keeps it simple for me, since I have to make do with it for the lack of accessories for snuff available in the open market.
I use a pen cap at work
I agree with Mike_B. Bic caps work well with me, but usually I use a knife blade or the part on a pair of nail clippers you push down.
what would be the material that is the least sticky ?
what about polished horn ?
Polished horn should make an excellent snuff spoon, horn won’t alter the flavour of the snuff like some materials can. I have a horn salt spoon that I use to fill my snuffboxes, its too large to sniff from but I would love a snuff spoon sized one.
Rosinski s snuffspoons are made of horn and are great.
Especially for very fine and dry snuffs!and very cheap also!
Not exactly DIY but Lego Shovels (or oars even) work great as snuff spoons.
I posted this earlier, but I’ll reiterate; Stainless steel Revlon cuticle care stick. About $10, it has a small spoon on one end, and a large flat “oar” on the other. If you don’t care about looks, it is the perfect lifetime snuff tool.
Awesome Spoons LMK if you guys want to trade spoons for snuff I got everything from Old Mill(by Great Chef Daniels) to De Kralingse etc… Just send me a message. I’m looking for something hand made from nice good wood.like the chess piece. Peace and Mahalos :-c
I’ve been meaning to post this for a while, great advice from @Zanaspus, thanks! I got this on Ebay (from China) for $1! It’s really great and there are many slightly different models that could also work. Originally I was planning to make a handle from wood, a bullet casing or some of that moldable glue stuff to cover the pointy end but I use it to get the snuff out of my nails!

Here are a few I’ve made. From left to right, top row 1-3 white oak, 4,5 heart pine bottom row oryx horn
@Hawaiian_Ryan If your still interested in spoons I can make you a custom one of your design (some limits apply lol)
Im not sure how I missed this, but since I found it, I would like to take this opportunity to talk up the work of @rostanf, who created the pieces seen above. If youre looking for a snuff spoon, and he has some ready, or the time to make you something custom, I highly recommend picking one up, or maybe even three. A while back, I received one of his gorgeous oryx horn snuff spoons, just like the black fatty handled model on the bottom right of the photo he posted. It is a lovely, extremely well made piece of art, and it seriously has not left my shirt pocket since it came in the mail, I love this thing. He even asked about what I wanted, made it to my preferences, kept me updated on his progress, and gave me a great deal, because hes apparently also a real nice guy. Soon enough, Ill have me one of those neat little shovels, and probably a snake, too.
@rostanf These spoons are great. You are a talented individual my friend. I am partial to the two snake designs. I like a small bowl, so I can control my snuff portions better. Great work!!
Apologies. Tried to upload a photo, but still cannot grasp the science! Lol
@Omgroma, have you tried to upload photo following this guide? https://snuffhouse.com/discussion/12646/how-to-insert-image-file-on-snuffhouse-board#latest
Thanks @volunge I will give that a try
