I bought a 10g tin of wos best dark. Being Wilsons i had to get into it with a knife, in fact had to puncture the tin to get the snuff out. I decanted it to an old honey jar washed out with soapy water. Now when i snuff it i get citrus followed by a slight rancid undertone. I realise i should have sterilized the jar. My question to you good folks is; would boiling water have done to sterilize the jar?

S

Boiled water with a little spoon of salt will do the trick and leave it open for some hours afterwards.

Thanks Salmiak.

I am thinking this may be the snuff and not an issue with the jar, I often use honey jars just washed out and left to try, I have yet to have any issues

F

I’m thinking it must be the jar as I decanted some into a snuff box and the rest into the jar. The rancid undertone has only been since I added some from the jar into the snuff box.

I find it is the lids (particularly the rubber/plastic seal) that retain certain odors, and then impart them to other stuff. I have soaked lids in various detergents, vinegar, baking soda etc. solutions for weeks without eliminating the lingering odors. If possible, get a new lid, or spring the few $ for a new jar with new lid…

Its wilsons though. Believe it or not, Ive had bad wilsons arrive. Like coffee cream smelling like literal piss. CoC having no pepperminty or minty or anything but dust scent…when it comes to wilsons, it has to be packed very carefully, I dunno why, it just goes bad so fast.

New 4 oz canning jars are cheap and you can buy brand new lids/rings even cheaper. When I empty a jar I clean and sterilize in the dishwasher and use a brand new lid combo for new snuff. Never had a problem with this ‘system’.

Cheers for responses folks.

I’ve given up trying to recycle food jars for snuff due to the smell cross-contamination issue. In the USA you can now buy Ball brand mason jars that are 1-2 oz that have twist off plastic lids with a gasket inside you can get them at Target, Walmart etc. T hey look like this: http://www.keeperofthehome.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/salsa-with-fridge-writing-on-lid.jpg

@Ivan‌ are the jars glass or plastic? Can’t tell from photo. Not cheap, but very good: https://secure.cnchost.com/weckjars.com/productsDetail.php?category=6

@chefdaniel the jars are canning jar glass, lid is a rubberized plastic and will fit all other mason-type jars of the same size (you can buy just the lids separately if you wish).

Cool.

Well, it goes to show (not that I needed showing) there’s plenty to learn from snuffing. I couldn’t discuss Marlboros like I can snuff when I smoked that’s for sure. I thought the prep work needed for sterilising jars was a bloke thing, obsessive attention to detail, but I was wrong.

I make chutney (I have an apple tree in my garden that seems to think it’s a factory every year). To sterilise the glass jars I’ve been saving I wash them up in soapy water and then stick 'em in an oven that’s been heated up to about 120 degrees (and then turned off) for about twenty minutes. Seems to do the job for chutney…

F

Ok cheers. I do think the issue was the jar. Ill definitely sterilize in future.

Agreed Whalen. Next time round I’ll hoover it up.
