Disappointed in Fubar Grunt

I am so disappointed in the Fubar Grunt that I received last month that I have to rant about it. Grunt is my go to, my #1 favorite snuff, has been for a long time, so I am very familiar with how it should smell. Anyway, I ordered 2 50g tubs and upon receiving, I noticed they both had a very strong ashtray aroma. I emptied both tubs into a large mason jar with the lid secured very loosely to try and air out the terrible smell. No luck…still smells of straight up snuffed-out cigarette :frowning: Is it possible both of these tubs were mislabeled? Could they actually be Grunt Toasted?? Anyone else notice this?? I’m almost out of Grunt but hesitant to place a new order…

They have lost all control over Grunt in my opinion, I am a loyal Grunt user, 80% of my consumption. I secured a kilo of the original batch for myself, smartest move I ever made, damn good snuff. I have ordered from all the batches made since then (I think, hard to keep track), and it has ranged from a weird Chocolate to Ashtray. One thing it has never had is that drop dead gorgeous original flavor. I would not recommend any subsequent batch. Think of how many people have been utterly disappointed with what should be a world class snuff… Pathetic, and I blame Dholakia. I spent an afternoon hermetically sealing 50 gram batches in glass two years ago, after keeping them in a bulk batch. Good as the day i got it, so the coconut that I get must be stable and from some other source, has not turned at all. I feel your particular pain desirexe… I will be happy to leave whats left of mine to you in my will.

And it occurs to me that Mr. Snuff himself had a hand in bringing this one snuff to life, I wonder why it has been allowed to falter so badly.

I have loved every batch of this one. Though this variation is why snuffs are scented more control over the consistency.

I had the same experience, when I ordered some it smelled like a stubbed out cigar. I could make a better snuff by drying out a gas-station cigar and running it through a coffee grinder.

Did a similar thing. Got a small container of the first batch and loved it, 10g gone in a day loved it. Reordered and it was like what the hell happened. I could grind up my wife’s cigarette butts and make a better snuff. Last night I just dumped almost 100g of the new batch grunt into my “this sucks, let’s mix it all together and hopefully it improves it jar”

A very generous friend gave me a sample of the original batch and it could easily be my every day snuff. I’ve since ordered some twice and received two very different snuffs. One was not too bad, rather cigar-ish, and the other had the ashtray thing going on. If they are ever able to reproduce the original I’ll buy tons but until then I’ll stay away.

I guess I got into the Grunt game late. The first, and only batch I received smelled just like a nasty ashtray. I kind of scratched my head and wondered what all the fuss was about. So, I let it sit a week and went back to it…nope, same nasty ashtray. I had to trade it away to a devoted Grunt lover.

My 25g tub was from the asstray batch, and when I first tried it I thought I would never open it again. I gave it several more tries at later dates, and actually began to like it. Maybe I wouldn’t like it if I had tried the original, I couldn’t tell you. As everyone always says, don’t dump it, just hang on to it (or trade it away) and you may end up liking it eventually.

Grunt is the most inconsistant snuff on the market, every batch tastes completely different.

I’ve had several batchs of grunt and they are all somewhat different. There is always something consistent about it in my opinion it’s always awesome. And with a light oiliness.

I guess I should change my review of grunt. To" its any bodies guess" just not to mislead non snuffhouse.org readers ,since we are the informed ones and know it’s a crap shot, What your going to receive

“For what we are about to receive may the lord make us truly hopeful”'?

I got the ‘cigar’ batch and have been very meh about it. There are a lot of other snuffs in my collection that will get finished before that one ever does. I find myself being drawn to brands these days for their consistency. I do large orders very infrequently so if i get a dud I tend to have a lot of it. I need to cull out some weak ones and see how my stock really looks. Consistency is the reason I tend to order Toque, F&T, and just a scarce few others these days. I’d rather have just a few wonderfully consistent snuffs at my fingers than play a game of ‘quality roulette’ every time I order. Just my $0.02.

This is not the fault of Dholakia, so I would suggest not blaming the company at first. FUBAR isn’t a Dholakia’s tradmark and they are only making those for someone else. In this case, they don’t have the power to satisfy the consumer as how they would like, but they have to listen to the suggestion of the owners of the tradmark. I suppose also, that you won’t find on the tin “manufactured by Dholakia”, but “Made in India for…”. I would even could guess, that it might not only me made by Dholakia, but another company as well, since the tradmark owner can also do such things. Which results in variation of products in the same label. I also think that might be just an occasional mistake, which sometimes happens when a product is made in a big company. Let us keep the good spirit and hope that the next batches won’t be a disappointment  Just wanted to clear this up

@lunecat I’ve had a problem with primarily the Dholakia sub-brands that are produced. QSnuff and FUBAR are the biggest offenders. I’ve had inconsistencies with the QSnuff Ice Cool (a good batch rocks, a bad batch smells like a breath mint), FUBAR Grunt, FUBAR RnR (One was a wonderful apricot, one smelled like detergent), There was even something different in the base between batches of FUBAR Medic, but that mattered less since the menthol masked most of the problems. Other than that I guess things were just lessons learned. Never order snuff in a tap box, the moisture will be inconsistent. Only order citrus Toques direct or they die. Etc…

That’s the point and problem of contract brands. The product is once made in company A and next time in company B. It’s really troublesome for the consumer, like in this situation.

I fell in love with what I’m assuming was the original Grunt. It was a sample sent by another member to me in a trade. I have since re-ordered twice and each time it has been different, the most recent being the “ash tray” grunt. I have found that it mellows out over time and bears some resemblance to the original, but not the same. With that said, it is still my go-to snuff…I never, ever leave home without my Grunt tin. Anyone looking to dispose of their ash tray grunt, send it my way. Also, I recently tried FUBAR Medic for the first time and loved it. To me, and I could be way off, it reminded me ever so slightly of a previous batch of grunt. Much more mild than the new version.

@Filek: you make some good points re contract brands, but in this case FUBAR Grunt is made by Dholakia and only ever has been made by Dholakia. I settled on the formula for the first batch and have never requested any change. In fact after the second batch came in a little different from the original I specifically requested that the next batch be as close as possible to the first batch. I am assured by Dholakia that the formula they use is identical every time and that this ‘eliminates the chance of any variation’. Clearly, though, there is some variation. If the formula and proportions are always identical I can only think it must be the leaf. Tobacco in India is grown in small fields by many small farmers. Every field is different, and every year is different. Leaf from these different fields are blended together in various proportions to try to make a consistent base tobacco. However I would think this is very difficult given the constraints. Perhaps it is the base tobacco that is the primary variant which might explain why traditional Indian tobaccos are heavily perfumed. On a more subtly flavored snuff, like Grunt, the flavor is not powerful enough to overcome the leaf variations. Of course I am only surmising. Perhaps Manit can chime in with a better explanation? I am looking forward to the next batch which will arrive fairly soon. Hopefully it will be closer to the original.

A new batch of grunt. Coconut to Chocolate to Ash Tray…where will this next one take us?
