Difficulty with American Scotches

Hello all! I am partial to American scotches, especially Navy Sweet, Honey Bee, Dental and Honest. But as a newbie, I find that I often sniff too hard and it ends up hitting my throat or making me cough. Plus I’m only taking minuscule pinches at a time, like tiny. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice on how to use scotches without these problems. Thanks!! -Jackie

I learned a great trick for the dusty ones from @basement_shaman Either discreetly wet the nostril or wet the fingertip.

Goodness! I just tried that right now and it worked perfectly!! Thanks so much! I will now be able to enjoy my beloved scotches without hurting myself.

There are many ways to use fine snuffs, use a lot. The closing the blow hole, the drop the adams apple, the plugging method. That bent straw gadget. and many threads archived here to learn how. Cut and paste in the search box ,top right hand corner the white box with a magnifying glass avatar,You may find a method to enjoy snuff use; until you get your snuff technique down. Scotches are tough and wonderful , I like the honest a lot- plain, smokey, BBQisk and you should be able to enjoy them. It may take time, I usually steer novice to a moister line of snuff Like Samuel Gawith, or heaver grinds like south african snuff or a German schmalzler. You could add 10% of a plain moist snuff to your scotch Then reduce the mix until your using it straight. This is a good method to master all finely ground snuffs

I started a few years ago with a medium snuff like president and thought snuff was like smokes, you choose a brand and stick with it. After joining this forum, I found a whole new world filled with products & ways to enjoy them. I have been doing American scotches for about a month now @Jackie_Bones You might want to try exhaling all your air before you sniff, it makes your sniff smaller

It’s counter-intuitive, but large pinches are the key. I used to cough terribly with scotches when I used tiny pinches or a spoon.

Think of it like this: What is faster: Vacuuming a spoon of flour or a pound of flower? The more volume you snuff, the slower it goes which also means that it doesn’t go as far.

regarding @MatttheFox 's comment, I do the opposite. I fill my lungs with air before I pinch the finest snuff. Why? In the event I do sniff too deeply, if I’ve emptied my lungs, the next thing I’ll need to do after my pinch is inhale. That subsequent inhalation will pull the snuff deeper. It also makes it easier to take a small sniff, because there’s very little room for a big one. I like to inhale fully before my pinch so that if I take it too deep, my next step is an exhale, and then I’m blowing it out, rather than pulling more in.

@puffpuff I will have to try this. Thanks
