Has anyone else noticed that different snuffs and different ways of taking tobacco seem to have different psychological effects? I have noticed that some snuffs, like Dholakia Black and Viking Dark, give me a really relaxed feeling. Others, like Dholakia White and Bruton, are strong stimulants. NTSU Black is so stimulating I have to be careful how much I take or I actually feel anxious, but I can take over a gram of D Black and feel more of a sedating “buzz”. SG Kendal Brown always gives me crazy dreams, moreso than any other snuff. And German snuffs always seem weak, I can take herculean amounts and not feel more than a slight lift. Pipe tobacco knocks me on my butt every time, cigars are the same but a little less intoxicating. I don’t know maybe it’s all placebo. Does anyone know of any research out there on the effects of chemicals in tobacco besides nicotine? Maybe this is all due to different absorption rates?
Smoking N. Rustica launches be into lala-land, especially if it is fresh rather than aged; the jolt of, I guess, nicotine, coming on all at once definitely has a different effect than, say, smoking a couple of Camels or a pipeful of Irish Flake.
Absolutely noticeable! It is not just the absorption rates although that does play a large role. There are many different ingredients involved with accentuating or de-emphasizing certain alkaloids that are found in tobacco and there are many types of tobacco with different levels of alkaloids. N. Rustica being particularly noteworthy for having higher levels of harmine and harmaline which can have extremely noticeable effects. It has also been said that bergamot has a noticeable influence on alkaloid absorption. Body chemistry can also play a major part in the reaction to these things. I don’t remember any particular research to point out at this time but simple experimentation with different products should yield these differences as you have noted.
Funny that NTSU black does not hit me too hard. I can take large pinches. SG Kendal Brown knocks me for a loop with a little pinch. I can see how different tobaccos effect different people differently. I do agree that some relax and some stimulate. I find toasts stimulate ans that is a shame cause i like them at night…like rig now.
You are absolutely right Horus. In fact I was just talking about this very subject on twitter! Some snuffs do indeed have a very stimulating cerebral high, notable bruton and dholakia white. Strong snus is like a smack in the face and hits my guts and nerves and can make me anxious too. Cigarettes made me anxious as well and I’d only feel a buzz off a cig first thing in the morning. The rest of the cigs were just to stave off craving, The buzz from snuff is the best.
For what it’s worth, I get a pretty different effect from a pipe or cigar compared to a ciggie. Not to mention compared with snuff, snus, or dokha
