What’s the difference betweend Viking Brown? Firstly I didn’t even think I could like this stuff, it had quite disguting aroma, but after few days I just fell in love with VB. But this love was short, because of little 25g tin. It’s all gone. Now I consider buying his brother, Viking Dark, and I wonder what’s the difference between them - does VD have same nic hit as VB and similar smell of burning villages?
* “between Viking Brown and Viking Dark” of course
Viking Dark has a nutty, smokey, leathery smell. I get walnuts and cocoa too. It’s good stuff, I haven’t tried Viking Brown but I’m really looking forward to it.
Viking Dark is just finer ground SG Black Rappee Viking Brown is SG Kendal Brown Plain relabeled.
@n9inchnails I’ve never had SG black rappee, but if viking dark is fine ground compared to it, thats got to be some very coarse snuff!
I just got a tin of Viking Dark now. I have already had a tin of Viking Brown. To me they both taste rather much the same. I just had the one sniff now, but I can’t tell much of a difference. Dark is finer than Brown though. That’s one thing. Anyway, I love it!
I like also the menthol edition, it’s worth a try if you like menthol
And what about Viking Spear? Worth trying? I know all snuffs are worth trying, but should I try VS before others?
I haven’t try spear yet, but menthol is a must (again if you like menthol). For sure Dark is the absolute

Is this confirmed, or suspected? I find so many more scents in Viking Dark than Black Rappee. But it certainly could be attributed to the grind and less moisture. I’m not saying that it’s not highly possible, but I find each so different from the other it’s hard for me to believe the only differences are only due to grind and moisture.
I am curious too whether this is known or suspected? Both are great snuffs, but I wouldn’t have guessed they were the same tobacco blend.
Well. I just want to continue my thoughts here. Dark and Brown are very similar, but all in all it seems to me that Brown is a bit richer in contrasting notes. There are more shades in it, whilst dark is a bit simpler, but Dark does have a striking unique scent at the first 2 seconds from when it hits your nose. This initial scent is curious to me to no end, I can’t pinpoint what the scent is, but it reminds me about something I know very well in the back of my mind. Also, Dark seems to fade in it’s entirety a lot quicker than Brown. I’d say I prefer Brown. Anyway, I’m super curious about Spear and Menthol as well, those will definitely get their turn.
@Mario84 for me that initial scent on Viking Dark that fades within a second or two smells like smoke, walnut, and cocoa.
I have long liked Black Rappee and find Viking Dark similar, but not the same. I get more back notes of something I can’t describe in the V Dark, while BR is more of a deeper, leathery type of scent. Maybe its just the grind. I’m not sure, but both are great. If I ran out of one, I’d like to have to have the other on hand. I can tell the Viking is made by Sam G.I don’t know why they just didn’t call it Kendal Dark, or Black.

I could be wrong here, but I think that these snuffs were originally contracted blended for Simon of MySmokingShop in the UK and Viking is his house brand, which is applied to other products as well such as pipes and cigars. I am open to correction but I think this is probably correct.

This is my understanding, as well. He also sells Viking brand pipe tobaccos and pipes.
All I know is that I LOVE Viking snuffs. Thor’s Hammer is my every day toot, and the Menthol is often my “before bed” one. I just love the grind and moisture level.
Does Thor’s Hammer have an SG equivalent as well? I really like the Viking snuffs, I just find that horned helmet a bit embarassing…
For some reason, the Viking snuffs do not appeal to me. There is something I am missing, I suppose. But, oh well…

Well, let me put it this way - when I opened my tin I thought it looked like it should have tomato seedlings sticking out of it.
