I am really frustrated from this problem… I stopped smoking cigarettes about 14 months ago… about 5 months ago I discovered snuff world and I fell in love with this hobby but I found out that I don’t smell most of my snuff most of the time except the Menthol snuff … I have 8 Toque flavors: Quit, Natural, Original, Chocolate, Blueberry, Espresso, Spanish Gem and Menthol also Dholakia Swiss Chocolate, Sparrow Cool, FUBAR Grunt, 6 Photo Natural, Poschl President… and if I smell the snuff I pinch it happens for just seconds… did anyone encounter this problem before and what did you do to repair or magnify your sense of smell ?
Happens to us all.
drink more water. That should help. I think the reason you can smell with menthols but not other snuffs. Your smell sensory cells need a certain amount of mucus for the sent particals to disolve into for them to pick up on any scents. Menthol causes the nose to run more then other snuffs allowing for a more watery mucus for the scent particals to disolve into. So try to keep your hydration up and see if that doesn’t help. The other thing is smelling fatigue which is a safety feature of the human mind. Any smell that you are continuousily expoused to the brain will stop listening to that scent and it will disapear. The brain does this so that it can pick up on other smells it might need to smell for safety reasons. Imagine if when you went to the ocean you smelled that the whole time how could you tell if your yogurt had a off or spoiled smell.
It’s one of these factors or both. So see if keeping hydrate helps and maybe rotate through your diffrent snuffs a little more. Most importantily nothing to worry about. Sometimes I’ll have to lay off a snuff for a while because I won’t smell it so much.
@bob Thanks a lot for the explanation… it is a relief that this condition happens to many so I ain’t better than anybody I will increase water uptake and will see what happens and I think based on that matter my condition will be better in winter as in Egypt summer is like hell and I can understand now why I can smell my snuff after I use fine grinds like Toque Quit or Sparrow Cool as the next pinch of different snuff can be smelled better.
Probably worse right when waking up too?
@bob Well I did not feel a difference.
You could try going for some more heavily scented snuffs. Almost any Indian snuff besides natural. Anything from F&T besides HDT. Also SPs are my personal favorite snuffs for scent. I don’t see any in your collection. Try toque sp Extra. Machrystal hops is pretty strong scent too. Good luck finding something that really works for you (:
@ItsMajick Thanks a lot for the recommendations… definitely I will include heavy scented snuffs in my next order but as you saw I have big stash, I must go through it first
I have found that when I stop smelling my snuffs, I just use scotches and toasts exclusively for a few days. It kind of resets my nose.
@FlippinBird It seems that you can “Restart” your nose I would try that but I have no scotches nor toasts but maybe Toque Quit & Toque Natural will do the job too.
@kougy I would believe any plain snuff would do. I think it has something to do with their lack of “scent” that lets one’s nose to rest so it can pick the smell out of your other snuffs when you go back to them.
I’ve noticed for myself sometimes changing the size of the pinch will fix this problem. Like today I experienced a loss of smell then I touch tiny pinches and the smell was back. Other times I’ll need big pinches to get the smell. Just thought about this worth a try.
I don’t know if this would help or not, but here goes. Some aromatherapists/essential oil sellers suggest smelling unbrewed coffee between sniffing different scents to clear the “palate” (while shopping for, or experiencing new essential oils)…
@ Mr. O that sounds like something that may be worth a try when getting a new snuff order. I tend to want to try out everything too quickly and that often leads to a very confused and overwhelmed nose. This may help things a bit.
Perhaps we snuffheads could take it a step further and snort the coffee. That ought to give the ol’ schnoz a jolt… In all seriousness, the coffee idea actually sounds pretty brilliant. Or maybe even smelling a really hot pepper/chili product to get your nose running a bit. I’ve noticed that inside of my nose dries out considerably more these days and that could probably lead to a smelling problem. To help combat the dryness, I fill my hands with warm/hot water and dunk my nose in it. Let it sit for a moment and give it a few good blows. I like to do this especially in the shower once it gets good and steamy… I 've also noticed that a pinch or two of Toque Original makes my nose feel clean and refreshed.
Thanks everyone for your opinions and feel free to say more… it will help everyone as it helps me!
@scurvy. I do snuff coffee on a fairly regular basis. I grind my coffee myself and almost always take a generous pinch of it to give me a quick caffeine fix. While waiting for water to boil
@ItsMajick that’s pretty awesome. I imagined that straight ground coffee might be too coarse and not very comfortable. What’s the experience like compared to regular snuff?
@ItsMajick who would have thought of that…@Scurvy maybe but who would have thought. Hmmm I REALLY like my coffee in the mornings…and during the day… and even at night periodically. I’ve chewed the beans, used in cooking and other ways but as an ersatz snuff… Hmmmmmm
I suppose if you really powder the coffee…I’m tempted to repeatedly feed a batch of unscented snuff with a shot of espresso or presspot coffee after everytime it dries out, maybe a little vodka to kill off bacteria, would that work as I imagine it? It may have more character than simply adding a coffee extract (maybe less fresh yet more earthy?)…I guess that’s why people experiment.
What about a neti pot full of lukewarm coffee?
I grind my coffee pretty fine. It’s really not bad. Not painful or anything. Slight burn but anyone who’s accustomed to snuff wouldn’t be bothered I’m sure. It definitely seems to give me a caffeine kick. Im less than Worthless without caffeine in the morning(;
@kougy I am glad you started this thread, as it has just happened to me. I am reading all the suggestions with interest.
@LadySnuff This problem is really important because it can ruin your snuff journey totally, no Nose no Snuff
@ladysnuff and @kougy try to increase your zinc intake and When trying to identify a smell, take short, shallow sniffs rather than one long one. You will notice cats and dogs do this when they are initially smelling something. It increases your ability to pick up a scent.
@distaind Thanks for the advice, enjoy snuffing.
Hmm, can’t say that’s ever happened to me. Do you suffer from allergies, perhaps?
@Jammer Well temporary loss of sense of smell is not a rare condition, it happens because of many reasons specially after 15 years of smoking cigarettes (myself) … and of course allergies could be an important reason, but in my case sense of smell comes and goes through out the day.
I smoked for 20 years. The only thing I can think of, as previous posters mentioned, is that perhaps you are “clogging” your nose up with too much (highly scented) snuff. This may be similar to what smoking too much Latakia does to me.
@Jammer Actually the only snuffs clogging my nose are Menthol Snuffs, until now I don’t have any heavily scented snuffs which I tend to buy in the future as it maybe more enjoyable for me than weakly scented snuffs like Toque for example ( good quality tobacco but weak scent ).
