Did the British ever take to putting snuff in their mouths like Americans and Swedes did? I tried dipping some toast the other day and it was a surprisingly pleasant experience.
No, never. Tobacco used orally here was/is in the form of spun tobacco - ropes, pigtails and the like. Snuff has always been taken nasally.
This may be a little off topic for the thread but rather than start a new thread I will just ask it here. I have never tried to dip the american snuff that I have but have thought about it. The only thing stopping me is how to do it. It seems a little tedious to take like 50 or more pinches, lol, to fill up your lip to the size of a snus pouch or skoal pinch, so how did you do it @horus92? Did you like take a teaspoon and scoop some up and put it all in at once?
@md363 i believe a method was to use a chewed stick, like a toothpick or something, ‘dip’ it in the snuff, and place it on gums. not 100% though. maybe just try rubbing a pinch across gums? never tried it, seems more cancerous than using as snuff, and snus. i expect sweet would be better for this.
@md363 most people use a toothpick or stick or even a toothbrush and dip it in snuff and then suck on it, but I dip it like copenhagen. You just have to take big honking pinches and resign yourself to the fact that about 40% of it is going to be spat out. But once it’s actually “in there” it adheres to your gums like concrete. A spoon can definitely make it easier. You want to keep your lips very tight.
@md363: some people who dip snuff use the lid as a makeshift teaspoon. You pour the desired amount into the lid, open your mouth and tap it in. Others just pour it in from the canister without using the lid as an intermediary.
