I tried snuff for the first time a little while ago. It was a bit of shock, but I’m basking in a nice, mellow nicotine buzz now. I put an appleseed-sized pile on the end of a small spoon and took a short, sharp sniff. I’m aware of where the snuff is intended to go in the nose and that’s exactly where I had a strong burning sensation for a little while. However, as I was exhaling through my mouth, I had a dry sort of snuff ‘taste’ on my tongue for a little while. Does this suggest I snorted it to the back of my throat? I had to rinse with a neti pot after a few minutes and it seemed like a lot more snuff came out than went in. I snorted water into my throat a few times and lots of snuff came out when I spat the water out. Maybe I used too much for my first time? (Actually, after 15 minutes this is quite a strong nic hit.) Do people really snuff a pea-sized amount?! I’m not overly fond of the underlying smell of the snuff but, I have to say, it’s much better than the smell of snus! (I also tried snus for the first time recently.) Cheers.
It’s OK to snort snuff. Spit it out or swallow it, doesn’t matter. Even a perfectly set snuff can drain back into the throat if your head is tilted back. You can eventually learn several techniques to suit different snuff types. You WILL with practice know how to set any snuff perfectly. That being said, unless you take time to go through your insufflation ritual you will shank or slice (golf terms) more often than not. The ritual makes snuffing a sublime experience but a careless snort has its own intrinsic value. In fact for some a careless snort may even BE their ritual. I suppose it comes down to how picky you want to be about it. Anyhow ENJOY… and don’t worry the learning curve is not very steep and it’s a bell curve that really only includes yourself.
I was steady on using Ozona President and had gotten good at placement. I recently bought Navy & Peach, both being a very fine dry snuff and the learning process has started over. I was used to tapping out a very small amount between my thumb & forefinger, now I am working on a pinch method to help me adapt to the finer snuff. Since you get the nic hit well before any drain back, you might want blow your nose after you achieve the feeling you desired to minimize the drain. Just a thought
Pea sized pinches give a good nicotine dose to people who need it - like ex-heavy smokers - and it burns far less than a small pinch, which is basically down to surface area. You will never get the best out of snuff with tiny pinches and probably a lot of people who try to quit smoking with snuff give up on it because of that. And good advice, as usual, from Juxtaposer.
Big pinches are the key. Took me a while to be brave enough to try it but I trust @snuffster’s advice. The key (for me) is to use my thumb and middle finger rather than forefinger. This gives you bigger pinches. Once I figured this out my snuffing is even more enjoyable and I have no problem pinching the finest grain snuffs.
what about when it hits the back of the nose, I’ve been snuffing for 3 months now, and I must say I try diligently to keep it in the front, where I seem to enjoy it more, but it still shocks me when it gets to the back there. -somewhat uncomfortable
I like to get it way up above my eyebrows, Here is a picture of my box car empty and full. This is my normal dose ,sometimes I will do a double for a kick start! 3peas and the pod
I would imagine in a way it’s like inhaling cigarette smoke. Perhaps even creating some of the same types of endorphins. In smoking cigarettes you become accustomed because it is a consistent function. In snuffing this may not happen so often and when it does it’s a more or less event which makes it difficult to get comfortable with. To further complicate things the banter that getting snuff into your sinuses is an imperfection of method further impedes the risk / reward understanding. I wish I could say you will get used to it but you may be programing your self not to. I also wish I could advise beginners to pay no mind to the rattle of advice on how to snuff “properly” as to avoid the uneasiness of inhalation. Alas, I cannot because snuffing into the sinuses is hardly necessary and is somewhat wasteful. So it is a fine line then that a snuffer walks trying to get his snuff into the “right” place. This makes snuffing somewhat of a meditative experience. On the other hand a little endorphin rush from the pain and a little extra nicotine absorbed through the sinuses is not such a waste in some schools. It certainly does not have to be all or nothing. @nosemboss
I was on Mr Snuffs page checking out his products and found a clue on how to control the dry snuff. The guy said that he exhales, pushing his stomach in before he insufflates the snuff. By doing this your sniff is smaller and more controlled
LOL @basement_shaman it’ll be a long time before I snuff that amount! I think my first appleseed-sized dose was far too big to start with. The effects seemed so strong I had to lie down for while. I suppose it might have been the red wine and codeine :)) , but I’m pretty sure it was a big nicotine hit (for me). I’ve been experimenting with much smaller doses now - eg. poppyseed sized doses on the tip of a little jeweler’s screwdriver. This is mainly practising technique, I don’t notice a nic hit unless I do a few. I was surprised how finely ground these snuffs are, it’s very hard to avoid hitting the back of the throat.
Smaller sized doses will not help with technique practice if your goal is not hitting the back of your throat.
@basement_shaman I would need a dust buster to handle that
If you dont want to hit the back of the throat, then BIG PINCHES BIG PINCHES BIG PINCHES are the key, using middle finger rather than forefinger. Go on, be brave!
@basement_shaman you, sir, are now my hero. Back in highschool, I’ll bet you were the guy with the four foot Graffix ;). Go big or go home. Happy Solstice, btw.
