I bought this one for a song… $0.99DeVoe’s Scotch SnuffI am pretty sure that it’s no longer made. It was listed as being from the 1930’s. The tax stamp says 5oz.
what do you mean no longer made? It’s still for sale at Nicotine Rush and it’s also listed on the US Smokeless tobacco website. I guess that particular variety (pure Scotch) may no longer be in production, but the name DeVoe Eagle Mills lives on as a sweet snuff. Of course, I’m kicking myself for not including it on my last order from Tom.
That is DeVoe Sweet Snuff, not Scotch Snuff.
Whoa! Outrageous shipping! Nice find though.
I have really taken a liking to the American dry snuffs! For some reason I never tried them, while living in the US. But I have always been a great fan of Irish High Toast. And I am really happy that I can now interchange my Toast with American dry snuffs! Today I’m having Buttercup, which I really like. It’s soooo dry! :o)
Xander> Talking about outrageous shipping - American snuff box
$8 is a bit high, but I only paid a total of $9 for it. So I can’t complain.
Viking, on that box its only $3.95 to ship to me, but very high to ship to you. That is becuase ebay’s shipping calculator is crap for forigen shipping. I was selling a lot on ebay a few months ago and almost every week someone from Europe would write me a question telling me the shipping was way too high. Finally, I just stopped offering the “Priority” shipping and put up a note telling the international customers that I ship cheap, and not to worry! So, my suggestion is that if you want that snuffbox, ask the seller what it costs for first class and not “priority”. From my experience, it should be between $5-$10.
Yeah, the calculator doesn’t even work for me, since I’m not UK based, and there is no ebay for Danish sellers. I have had some awful experiences with buyers, who upon receiving their snuff boxes, went out of their freaking way to get me to do a partial refund, even though there was nothing wrong with the box! Some trying to push me to refund their shipping costs - so now I’m tough and postage is non-negotionable with me, with regards to buyers I don’t know. Signed for, and insured - or no deal whatsoever. This keeps most idiots from bidding on my snuff boxes.
Actually, DeVoe’s Sweet does not appear to be in production any longer. All my suppliers are out of it, and have deleted it from their databases. Anyone want to call US Smokeless to confirm?
It’s still listed on USST’s website. I sure hope that it’s not true…
Really not a big seller by any stretch. Swisher still has a bunch listed on their site that they no longer produce. What I have left will probably be all I’ll ever have.
Crap. I’ll order a tin with my next order, just to have a stockpile of it.
The jar of DeVoe’s was waiting for me in my mailbox. The snuff is in perfect condition. Very minimal rust on the inside of the tin so I scraped the top layer off. Still smells great.
Cool. I hope Tom still has a tin of the sweet my next order, or else that one will be confined to ebay as well. It would have been nice if they made an announcement rather than quietly deleting from their databases.
Well, just because I was curious, and added to that there was a rumor on this thread that Devoe was no longer in production; I picked up a tin from Tom with my most recent purchase. While my nose might be a little tainted because I’m trying all the snuff I just received; overall, I thought the Devoe sweet was a quite decent sweet snuff. I would say it is similar to Red Seal, but it seems a bit moister, and is thus a bit easier for me to take. It’s a also a nice change from some of the overly sweet scotch offerings like honeybee or garrett S&M. So, if you want a sweet snuff that’s pure and pleasurable, I would certainly pick up a tin in case they discontinue this.
Well, I polished off my sample of DeVoe Scotch. Not much in flavor, but good strong hit. I have been working at My DeVoe Sweet since winter. Its about 2/3 gone. Can Dave or Tom confirm its discontinued? I’ll probably finish it off in either case.
I heard it had stopped production, but I just located a box of 12 the other day (DeVoes). I will see if I can get any more because if it is out of production, I had probably better buy all their remaining stock. Dave
It is out of production.
I just received 2 cans of DeVoe’s Sweet that I won in an eBay auction. Don’t know how old they are, but they’re obviously vintage, and well-preserved. Old enough for the white label to turn beige. The cans are solid tin, not just cardboard tubes with tin caps, if that helps any snuff historians estimate their age. Of course I had to crack open a can to sample. I don’t know if it’s due to aging, but this snuff is delicious! A honey-like sweetness with some sweet spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, and a hint of fruit. Reminds me very much of Dutch apple pie. Not as harsh as Garrett Sweet & Mild or Red Seal, but still has a potent nicotine kick. I’ll have to add a can of it to my next Mr. Snuff order, if he still has some in stock, to compare old vs. new.
