While browsing Filek’s wonderous Top 25 Snuff site, I discovered in his “All time” snuff list a company by the name of Demuth Tobacco in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. Looking at Filek’s map, he has it listed as not only still in operation but that it is currently making snuff. Three styles are listed: Celebrated, Maccoboy, and Rapee. Further internet searches found a picture of an old snuff jug here on Snuffhouse, and this website: Demuth Tobacco ShopSince this place is practically in my back yard, this struck me as very interesting. Sadly they do not ship to Delaware, but its only an hour drive from here, probably half that for Snuffy (where are you these days?) So before I email or call them to ask about what snuffs they have, I thought I’d ask here in case anyone knows anything and what else you know, Filek. If it turns out to be good news, I might have to make a venture up there and get some. Could this be the American version of Smith’s?
I do not believe they make snuff. The only snuff related thing on their site is: Reproduction Demuth’s Snuff Crocks. If you find out differently, please let us know.
tom, all I know is what I read on Filek’s website. He lists three snuffs (could be from the old days) but then the map shows a solid yellow star (still in business-still making snuff). Just a few minutes ago I found this: article from last year: Lancaster-York Heritage RegionAnd an article from last year: Lancaster LivingI will draw your attention to this passage: Ranck also bought the brand name years ago for Demuth’s snuff, which Demuth’s itself used to manufacture in a building behind the shop. The snuff is no longer made, but Ranck hints that might not always be the case. “We’re working on developing the snuff,” he said.
Ok Filek, did you tell them you were in Poland? They may not want to deal with international customers. Since I am close, they may want to talk to me. I’ll send them an email today! I might even call on the phone!
I sent a message with their contact form back when I started this thread. Last night I tried again, but sent it directly to their email address. If I don’t hear back in a couple more days I’ll call them on the phone. I think a lot of brick and mortar shops don’t check their email very often. We also had a holiday weekend here last weekend, so they might have been closed. Don’t worry, I won’t let this one go until I have an answer.
