DeKralingse Bon Bon Review

I received a sample of DeKralingse’s latest offering in the post this morning. It is called Bon Bon and is very nice indeed. It has an excellent tobacco base flavoured lightly with rose and tonquin by the smell of it and it smells lovely. The flavour is very light and unfourtunately fades very quickly, but it leaves a bloody lovely tobacco scent. I really can’t tell you how nice the tobacco scent is in this snuff it is purely excellent. I recommend this snuff and give it 9/10. Thank you very much Jaap for the sample, I will be ordering this when it comes out. Email or whisper Jaap for a sample it really is worth it. Stefan

That was very fast. I’m looking forward to it, myself. Stephan, is it the same base tobacco as Hollandse Bolongaro?

Thank you Stefan for the kind words. Yes, Xander, it is. Kindest regards, Jaap Bes.

Received my sample today, and I can truly say I´m most impressed! The moisture is a bit weird, as it´s not really moist, but rather wet! But well, it´s very fresh, so this should be normal. Still, it had to dry out a bit, as it just doesn´t stay in the nose with this moisture. The flavour is fantastic and extremely long lasting. I really don´t know why Amber ain´t more widely used in snuffs, maybe it´s expensive as hell? But it´s an absolute winner here. Gave it to both a female and male colleague to try it and they love it just as well. And I must add, that I absolutely love the idea about reviving long lost snuffs, people used and cherished long before all of us were born. It´s also a sign of respect for our gone snuff brothers and sisters. Thank you Jaap, for this excellent snuff!

Just tried my sample of this snuff, excellent and highly recommended. Great Job Jaap and thank you very much for the samples! I love the base tobacco scent of your snuffs, for me it brings back great memories of all the great tobacco stores I have been to. A very calming and peaceful snuff, in my honest opinion.

I got very lucky with this one as I had to place orders for myself and some to send overseas and low and behold I ended up with three samples of the BonBon! Wondeful snuff. Jaap I am assuming from the posts that you make this stuff so wondeful job, I love every single one of the windmill snuffs, I have them all with the exception of the menthol one. What are the scents in the BonBon? It seems like roses to me. Just curious.

I never got my sample.

Thanks for the kind words. @ dgriego: A rather complex snuff containing amongst other ingredients Sandalwood, Benzoe, Tonca, Amber, Vanilla, Orrisroot, Lemonoil, Storax, Lavenderoil, Bergamotoil and Cognac. @Xander: If you did ask me, sorry you didn’t get it. I’ll be glad to sent you some, just tell me where it has to go. Jaap Bes.

Well it is sure wonderful stuff, I shall use some right now and see if I can scent any of these items.

I got my sample from Jaap today along with a nice postcard with a picture of the mills on it. Thank you much mate. My first impression is that this is a truly unique snuff. It seems almost like a mixture of chocolate and floral. It’s mellow but rich with a nice kick to it as well. That said, I need to add that I am just coming off a nasty cold, so it could be spearmint for all I know. Good stuff. I plan to spend some more time with it as my head clears. Thanks again Jaap

I got mine a few days ago. You can’t be too sick, Snifs, becuase that’s more or less what my wife said about it. Chocolate liquour, she said. Vanilla & Tonquin must be giving the choco effect. The amber (ambergris?) aspect of it is strangley familar. I don’t think I’ve never encountered any before, except maybe at a whaling museum. It and the various other oils (most of which are unfamilair to me) combine for a very forest like or with a lot of plant & root scents. Its quite nice, and I agree it was very moist. Great work, Jaap!

I got my sample in a couple of days back - thanks, Jaap ! I must confess that the only de Kralingse snuff I’ve tried before was the Latakia and it wasn’t really my cup of tea. But the Bon Bon definitely is. It’s got a delightfully subtle scent which doesn’t overpower the delicious tobacco base. I scoffed the entire sample in a little over a day by shovelling up huge pinches at a time. I’ll definitely be ordering some more, along with some Bolongaro to check out the unscented version. Highly recommended !

@BradMajors: Bolongaro is excellent, and I can understand somone not liking the latakia varieties, but you must make sure you get one of the non feremented Virgina variteies in your order. Personally, I’d say Prins Regent, but any one will do. You will not reget it!

Thank you all. Jaap Bes.

@Xander: That’s probably good advice ! How do the non-fermented varieties compare ? I’m tempted by the Pompadour as I do like cloves. I’ve avoided all de Kralingse snuff since I tried the Latakia a couple of years back, but I suspect the Bon Bon will become a perennial favourite.

Pompadour is very nice, but not as sweet (or as ropey) as Macuba and Prins Regent.

Jaap, Does this have ambergris in it, or just amber?

@ cstokes4: The price of ambergris today is of such a magnitude you wouldn’t buy the snuff anymore, so we use the botanical substitue. Jaap Bes

So is it amber? Or botanical subsitute ambergris? Does amber even have a smell?

oh yes amber has an amazingly lovely smell. Some what similar to copal and other tree resins.
