Decided to give snus a try

Just placed my first order with Northerner for an array of portion snus. I figured this would be a more sensible start point for a noob rather than loose. On the way I now have one can each of: Thunder Original Extra Strong Thunder Frosted Mini Extra Strong Thunder Coola Extra Strong Thunder Ultra Raspberry Extra Strong Thunder Melon Extra Strong Phantom Classic Mini Phantom Classic Mini White Am I right in thinking these want storing in the freezer? What happens with cupboard storage? I’m hoping these will curtail the craving for cigs when driving. I have used ecigs for car jorneys before, but find myself using a whole cartomiser within a couple of hours. I have tried having a sneaky pinch of snuff too, but tend to end up wearing more than I snuff, which is a problem when driving to a meeting.

Freezing, or at at least refrigerating will extend the freshness of the snus. I freeze all mine except the tin I am using but I am at three or less portions/prillas a day now. Before I would have 3 or 4 tins on the go and would keep the ones not immediately in use in the fridge. They might lose some flavour and dry out more quickly if kept in the cupboard but it’s probably OK for a month or two. You’ve pretty much covered the entire spectrum as far as strength goes. The Phantom minis might be enough to stave off cravings but are too weak for me personally. On the other side of the coin - if the Thunder Ultras don’t kill the cravings, I don’t know what will. Strong stuff, I didn’t care much for them myself. I find the ultras give me a drip like battery acid.

I would also put them in a zip lock freezer bag. I noticed on my Oden’s can the used storage lid is hinged and lets air in.

Thanks guys  @crullers thanks for the heads up on the strengths. I figured I’ll start with the higher strength ones on the long drives, and just try the Phantoms at home of an evening, where I can top up with snuff.

@basement_shaman is that in a bag in the freezer, or in a bag when you’re using it?

I’m barred from snuff still for now at least until I see the doc at the end of the month so I’ve been on a bit of a snus odesy lately in fact it’s all that I’m using but I’m using quite a lot and I really enjoy it with coffee so now I’m drinking to much of that. but finding my way some now and I actually find the normal strengths are enough for me although I use some strong also but I’ve abandoned anything extra or ultra strong or to drippy as I just don’t need that much and I have found that I like the mini portions when out and about and the larger size are fine for at home use and I usually go for the white versions. Up to now I have been ordering lots of individual cans to try many and have just come to order my first batches of 10 cans for the best price deals and I was pretty surprised at the snus I arrived at in doing this. Nordic Ice (seemingly generally despised by the snus community which seems to keep the price low), both cherry and the mint and I’m waiting on the wintergreen to try. I hated the cherry when I first tried it and then as I tried to use up the tin something completely changed and I found its strength and freshness and even the chemicalish flavour and longevity for such a smallportion to be just about what I wanted as an everyday snus but I still like the Skruf and Odens and Jabossons original tobacco flavours. I like the Northerner minis also but they are a little to small perhaps. Anyhow I now have several months supply. I think I’m in for the long haul but I do want to ease off a bit. At least now I know a lot of snus that I can discount in future orders and know the ones that I like but still more to try if they become available to the UK.

I’m still predominantly a cigarette smoker, and a mixture of snuff and ecigs hasn’t yet swayed me away sufficiently, which is why I decided to try the extra strong versions. I generally smoke roll ups, though I do like the occasional red marlboro. When I got back from my hols last week, I had a few packs of red marlboro and 150g of rolling baccy left over from my time on board ship. I’ve since found myself smoking a red marlboro, and wishing I’d had a rollup instead as it hadn’t hit the spot. I doubt normal strength will be enough for me on long drives, although saying that, I was surprised how well Oliver Twist bits staved off the cravings on the coach to and from the cruise terminal. It was this that made me think about trying snus… although I should add theres a big difference between the coach where smoking is prohibited and my car where it is not. OT might have tided me over on the coach, but isn’t likely to in the car

@50ft_trad in the freezer or refrigerator. after you find out what your daily usages is; you may want a smaller container to carry your snus. If you leave it in your car it will dry out fast. I had a small pewter pill box that holds six portions and just recently aquired a stainless steel ice tool snus can with compartment lid that was gifted to me, a fraction larger than the snus can so you take the lid off and place the can inside the Ice tool can than discard the lid, it is large and heavy. They make a slim can with a rubber seal made of anodized aluminium. If you can’t be bothered with loading a smaller box daily. There is no reason you can’t use the plastic can it comes in,except it may crack or the lid come off in your pocket. I had also used the snuffhouse.org box, I’m sure a smash box would also work. Enjoy your snus experience.

Yes if you still smoke then strong snus like Thunder should be more appealing. Hope they help you anyhow. I expect they should once you get a bit used to them. I was using an e-cig and then nicotine gum and snuff to stop smoking but now only snus seems to be enough or more than enough in the case of the strong version or if I take a lot of regulars but I still miss taking some snuff. The Nordic Ice also does not require refrigeration apparently? Maybe it’s full of chemicals? and probably be to light in strength for yourself. Anyhow I am yet again savouring the Wild Cherry right now while looking forward to my next Skruf original. You’ll definitely get the idea from those you ordered. There is a nice Whisky flavour sort of Artisan snus that snusline and others do if you like that sort of thing - I like it - but it’s not just as strong as the Thunder. I’ve not tried the Raspberry as I hate Raspberry but the ultra’s do put out a lot of nicotine as in 22mg or something which I think is about a 20 pack in one hit over an hour or so? The Melon I have but don’t like. I’ve had to spit Ultra Frosted out well before they were empty as I seemed to be overdosing and I don’t like the Frosted thing either. I think the stronger snus can be down on flavour compared to the classic strengths, sort of overpowered by the nicotine strength and I like good tobacco flavour snus but again I think the higher strengths will suit you better. Regular snus is only 9mg in comparison and the Nordic Ice I would guess are around 6mg.

Many thanks for your comments. Really appreciated guys

The thing about snus I found most strange was that unlike a pinch of snuff or whatever, a snus portion lasts up to an hour or more depending on the particular strength etc so sometimes I find I have to plan when to take a fresh one. No point just before bed or a meal as it will basically be wasted as I will not have time to use it all. Really nice to be able to take the time and use the snus until it’s properly exhausted of flavour and nicotine so while driving is a perfect opportunity. You should find they work well for that.

snus is the only thing to stop me smoking haha. good stuff. try a strong portion before driving though haha. dont want to realise too much nic is creeping up first time while driving haha.

Love, love, love snus. I’m partial to General Mint White portions (especially the minis), Ettan portions, and Roda Lackett. The RL has such a warm, raisin-like spice. Delicious with an iced latte. I like the feel of a portion fresh from the refrigerator. And I keep an empty portionbox in my purse with only a few portions for running around with for the day. If you really want to make the e-cig work, much of that depends on your set up. I quit smoking by switching to vaping, but there was definitely a learning curve. I learned quite a bit (even ended up managing a vape shop), but you see where I am… Here. Happily snuffing. Snus was lovely after no tobacco at all for over nine months. And snuff? Snuff is heaven. ;

Try Oliver Twist for something different. Comes in a variety of flavors. Small portions in small tin with big flavor.

It was actually trying Oliver Twist bits that made me consider snus. I do quite like the Arctic and Eucalyptus.

Your snus will be fine if kept in the fridge up to about 3-6 months after the expiry date but some dry out quicker than others. If you’re going for any long term storage you have to freeze it. Sealing it air tight is best but you can freeze it for about 12 months without needing to seal it up and it will still be fine. I still have snus in my freezer from 2008 and 2009 sealed and it is fine. As you haven’t ordered much keeping it in the fridge will be fine. Once I open a can I never put it back in the fridge, original portions (the wet ones) dry out faster than white portions (the dry ones) original portions will completely dry out outside the fridge once opened after about 3 weeks or so but you can rehydrate them and they are almost as good as new. Be careful with the extra Starks, even though you’re a smoker you will notice it, especially thunder as they hit quite hard. You need to get used to them and you will also not want to smoke (which is a good thing). Just be careful when driving if using extra Starks at first, you will get brain fog until you get used to them, try smoking about 5 fags on the bounce very, very quickly, that foggy feeling and shakeyness you get is what using an extra stark for the first time is like for most people, not really nice when you’re driving, if in doubt, spit it out.

Thanks @Skell18 I’ll be sure to take one for a test drive at home before using them out on the road.

I’m starting to wonder if snus is affecting my teeth fillings. They seem to have become more sensitive to temperature and pressure when biting down on food. Maybe it just because I’m not chewing so much gum now as I can’t while I have a snus in and I basically always have some snus or other in there? Just had a Thunder Caramel or something which is almost like eating a really gooey chocolate brownie. A bit to much sweetness, no actually more a massive load to much.

Order came in today. Popped a Phantom Classic under the top lip, and stuffed all the full size Thunder’s into the freezer. The snus lasted in there for about 25 minutes, then I got a sudden rush of juice and spat it out. Might take a bit of acclimatising to them. Initial impressions, I did the right thing starting with the Minis. Nic level seems OK for sitting reading a book, but time will tell if it’s enough to replace cigs on a long drive. I’ll try a Thunder Mini out one evening and see how that compares. Not going to try the full size or Ultra Strength just yet

That’s pretty boring if I’m honest. I’ve only had about 5 snus and it’s midday and that was with taking a break between the 3rd and 4th (going easy) and I still have yet to put a snus in the freezer. Carefully does it. I guess I’m having more trouble with caution, although I’m not fully nicotised at present I’m getting better at judging when to pause once I get to the level I feel best with which is usually just before overdose.
