Has anyone else paid attention to the evolution of aromas as your snuff slowly “air’s out” over time. Just a week ago I filled my snuff box with a SP that was bright with bergamot, citrus, floral notes and subtle ammonia. 1 week later it now has aromas of earth, oxidized citrus, subtle barnyard, cooked fruit and dried bergamot. Very much Like wine, snuff has an evolution of aromas. The art is getting it at the right time eh? POV.
I found that Samuel Gawith’s Kendal Brown begins to smell a bit off in the can after a while. Someone I think said ‘cat’s piss’. Doesn’t sound nice. But the flavour you get in the nose is better than when it’s quite fresh I think, lovely really. I’ve also had very fresh GH KB. It has a ‘cheesy’ taste, off-milk. I miss this when it airs out and I find it less attractive. Some of them I don’t get at all until they’ve aired quite a lot. Some SPs have a lot going on that I for one don’t get till they’ve aired. Airing seems to be fine for most snuffs, but dehydration is lethal to them.
YES I have noticed this, especially with my Fribourg & Treyer tins. It is fantastic. I love how it has changed and become almost stronger, or more intricate. The scents / flavors have really become pronounced with all of the snuffs. I am glad I kept all of them and didn’t sell any or throw any away
I really like Old Paris after it’s been sat in a snuff box over night. I’m not sure what changes in it, but something does, and it’s wonderful.
Yes I have noticed that too. When I order the 6 for 5 deal from Toque’s website, I always have to leave Toque Natural out for a few days and I like it that much more. On the other hand, I’m really starting to like the moisture and flavor of Toque Original from when it’s super fresh, so I leave it in the bag after I open it to get that taste.
I had a couple 5g Tom Buck tins that sat around for about a year. Very very different flavor than the fresh stuff I recently acquired. Sits differently in the nose as well. Same thing with O&G. O&G simply will not stay put in my nose unless it is dried out.
This is one reason (aside from economics) that I buy in bulk when I can. Each snuff is unique but they all react to decanting to some degree. Some improve, some don’t. Some are like bananas, they have a ripeness window and are best during a certain period of time. SPs seem to be the most sensitive for me. Also, the storeage conditions and quantity come in to play as well. The chronological alchemy of tobacco never ceases to surprise and amaze me.
I never buy tins of snuff nowadays. Once you have bought your favourite in bulk its impossible to go back because you realise how stale most snuff is in cans unless its vacuum packed or in a F&T type tin.
I concur. If I can’t get it in bulk (aside from sampling) I go for the largest sized container available. The water based snuffs seem the most vulnerable to rapid aging. The smaller the tin, the less it tends to keep,
I am stuck between ordering bulk or small tins. Ive only tried about 25 snuffs or so, and I want to try them all! However there are some snuffs that I would like to buy giant containers of. Like HDT or Spanish Gem. If only I had enough money for all of them.
After sampling snuffs for over a year, I think I can soon narrow my collection down to only 4 snuffs in bulk (when I get a job, that is!). O&G, Tom Buck, Cheeta, Super Chetak. All I will ever need.
Shoot- I’d go bulk on about 10 different snuffs if I had the means! @OscarWabbit’s got the idea! ha ha
Yeah, this topic’s been on my mind for the last week or so. It began when I tasted a bit of one of my god-knows-what mixes that had been in the fridge for a few weeks. Expecting crap, I found it to be delightful. @Pike Mopers – that’s a tough call: get a job or fully satisfy snuff hankerings? As long as you can keep making music, I guess a job comes in handy sometimes.
@Spam : If I had a wooden snuffbox, I’d love to give that a try. Old Paris has a very interesting scent. I’d love to try it after its been fully decanted. I might just have to have a pinch of it right now
lately, I’ve been noticing subtle changes in my all-day snuff, Super Chetak. The change is very gradual and I only really notice it with the refilling of my tin. I have a lot of Chetak in a jar and I put it in a tin (since I don’t have a box that can handle such a finely ground snuff). After taking the last pinch from the tin, I go to refill from the jar and take another pinch and notice the difference. I didn’t notice this before, maybe I’ve been using this snuff so much that my nose can now detect the nuances of freshness. I empty the tin in 1 or 2 days (usually 1) so it’s not a huge change in freshness, either.
