Decant(worthy) jars

This has probably been discussed somewhere, but can’t quite find a thread.

Do you figure these jars would suffice for decanting?

Just go to Walmart and buy a flat of the smallest mason jars they have.  You will get more storage for less money.

Yes, any jar with an airtight lid would suffice. I’m more of a reuse person, empty jam jars or whatever. I mostly like the baby food jars in various sizes. Just find a friend with a baby and you’re sorted.

Awesome, WalMart it is. Also like the baby food jars, but tracking down a friend with a baby is difficult at present.

Thanks!

I use these: http://www.calpaclab.com/4-oz-bottles-wide-mouth-packer-amber-pe-cone-liner-case-24/wh-w216953 The glass is excellent and the cap is very re-sealable and inert. I keep all of my Old Mill, Abraxas and Sir Walter Scott in these. And also moist / salty English varieties. @basement_shaman has a lot written about this topic. He use fruend ( sp? ) containers- excellent as well.

I use mason jars for snuff and pipe tobacco.

4 ounce mason jars are perfect size , although it is sometimes hard to find the smaller 4 ounce size in stock, but you can always find them on ebay. Just under one dollar each dilivered. ordered off ebay the ones @TigerJackshere listed. call me lazy, but i’ll be able to spend more time with the things that matter most snuff, my ridgeback puppy, and the lady. suppose i’ll just ziplock everything until they arrive although i am likely being a little paranoid on the whole shelf life thing.

Thanks again!

Personally I use various sizes of apothecary jars, the kind with a rubber stopper held down by a latching metal clamp over the glass lid. I think that they seal about as well as a mason jar and I just prefer the way they look (silly I know). Pretty much can’t go wrong with anything that tightens down and compresses some kind of gasket. I think glass is better than metal as some snuffs interact with certain metals and the result is rust and oxidation.

I just use the Ball screw top jars. The 16oz jars hold 120-150g of snuff if I remember correctly. They also work wonderfully for pipe tobacco, and hold roughly 2oz comfortably.

This is all great. Purchased some of the 4 ounce mason jars. I gather it’s extremely similar to storing pipe tobacco (currently trying to get rid of some of mine as I gave up all smoking).

Question 1: given that tap boxes seem to dry out fairly rapidly would it make sense to take 5+ of my Bernard Brasil Doppelt Fermentiert tap boxes and decant those into a jar? The tap boxes themselves seem to pull apart quite easily and I figure this wouldn’t be any different.

Question 2: I found out very quickly that I have no appreciation for anything mentholated or a derivative of such. The Bernard Zwiefacher is about as close as I can get. With that being said, I opened a Wilsons CoC 25g and I figure this would only fill maybe half of the 4oz mason jar or less. Would it be correct to assume that the only part of the snuff that would go ‘stale’ is the top layer as this is the only layer exposed to air? My SG Extra Menthol will undoubtedly stay unopened in it’s tin for potentially eternity.

Thanks again guys for all the help. Sincerely appreciated.

@TShaq, it’s been my experience that snuff weight fits into twice the volume, container.
So for instance, a 15 gram small Old Mill tin fits in a one ounce bottle.
Once ounce ( by weight ) of Railroad Mills scotch, fits in a two ounce ( by volume ) bottle.

So, I think if you have 4 ounce jars, you’ll likely be able to fit around two ounces of Bernard’s or approx 5-7 10gr tapboxes.

@TShaq Use the mason jars for bulk storage & find you something very small to keep out just enough for a few days at a time so you don’t over expose the jars to air / oxygen & the snuff kept sealed in the mason jars un disturbed will keep for years & years, I use Tylenol push down to open vial type bottle you buy from the counter at the quick stop grocery store, they hold enough for a week or so& you can just tap out a bit on the back of your hand.  G’Day

@dtom7476, I lI’ve in Arizona where it is dry. The problem I have with the rubber stopper ones, is that the rubber will dry out rather quickly and ruin anything that was in it. Other places with more humidity may not have those issues though. Just a heads up.

if your on a low budget small baby food jars have an excellent seal. And if you know anyone with a baby you can ask them to save you a bunch so they are just about free.

As for those air seal wire bale top jars, if you wet the rim of the jar it makes a better seal.

These are the ones I use: http://www.freundcontainer.com/2+5-oz-cobalt-blue-glass-wide-mouth-packer-bottles-black-phenolic-cap/p/4235B03/ I think they are stylish. When I got mine they were very cheap ,now they are more than double, I always forget about inflation. I also use the 4 Oz and the 8 Oz .I had great success with them over the last decade. Snuff is still in excellent condition. Once opened and I fill a snuffbox; I will blow breath into the jar just before I close the lid,It adds just a small bit of moisture and displace the air.

if you have ali express you can buy snuf tins with a screw lit they work very wel and i also use litle preserving jars from the Action store, they keep the snuff nice and fresh in my opinion.

So, found a bunch of mason jars that fit ~25g and ~50g amounts. All good to go on that front. Now, are there particular tins that you would decant immediately? For example, a SG tin takes both hands and a saw to access, but a toque tin takes a simple twist. Curious if you decant immediately or if you let some sit in the tin they came in? Lets say I have a SG toffee tin and a toque Spanish gem tin under consideration.

I put the small tins that will fit in the jar, a 4 oz canning jar, in the jar unopened. I put them in top down. I can read what is in the can from outside the jar. I don’t place a label on the jar. I know that’s no help with the larger tins. I place those unopened in a large humidor with the humidity set in the 60% range in my basement where the temp remains fairly constant.

@TShaq I decant WoS snuff straight away. The tins can corrode, depending on what’s in them. Anything I bought in 25g tins goes into glass, and anything smaller goes into recycled Toque tins. Bulk goes into glass the first time it is opened, but I’m happy to leaved sealed tubs stay sealed till first use. F&T stays in the tin if fine, and goes into glass if coarse. Toque bulk goes straight into larger jars, but the tinned stuff stays tinned. GH stays in the tubs (I haven’t bought any tins yet). SG stays in tins. SG and GH bulk goes into glass as soon as possible. With all the bulk snuffs, I decant around 25g of each down into smaller kilner style jars to minimise the amount of times I access the bulk jar.
