Dean Swift Flavours

J

I was ordering from Wilsons anyway, so stuck four Dean Swifts in with the order - the four (apart from Black Watch which I’ve already tried) whose name gave nothing away about their nature! I’ve put up brief reviews for all four, but just wanted to encourage anyone else to chip in! In particular, I would be interested to know from anyone experienced in these matters whether Dean’s Own is a toast or an attempt to reproduce an American Scotch…

X

Dean’s Own is a plainish SP. Probably the same as Wilson’s SS or SP2. Maybe even plainer.

J

Can’t find an SS or SP2 on the Wilson’s of Sharrow website - are these old J&H Wilson brands? Dean’s Own certainly smells like an SP in the tin, but it’s so fine I can’t get a real idea of what it’s like in the nose because it ends up straight in my lungs…

X

There are several snuffs not listed on their website, but I am indeed talking about Sharrow. If I was speaking of J&H Wilson’s I would have been made sure to specify. Some of the true SPs (Wilson’s seems to list everthing they can’t easily class as SP for some reason) have a rather fine grind, but no they are not toasts. I can’t remember which was which but one was somewhat more fragrant, but both still on the plainer side of Best SP. Both also have a finer grind, but probably not as fine as SP Silver. Mr. Snuff or Snuff Store should stock both for sure. They’re both worth trying. I may have to revisit Dean’s Own, since its got to be fresher than any ones I had before.

J

@Xander forgive me for doubting you! Fascinating. I’ve just looked on Mr. Snuff and there they are. From the reviews, my guess is that this is SS by another name. But yes, a revisit of Dean Swift would certainly be a pleasant experience - the five I have had so far have all been delightfully fresh. Even if, in the case of Black Watch, downright odd!

M

Black Watch is the first snuff I’ve ever thrown away.

J

It was so odd that I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away! Some things have gone straight in the bin - the Samuel Gawith version of Jockey Club, for example - but Black Watch survives. Every now and then I even have a pinch to remind myself how strange it is…

B

I’am getting a tin of black watch my next order. It was my favorite dean swift snuff back when that was the only snuff I knew about. It was the only one I missed.

J

@Bob I think it must have been Black Watch that your ocelot avatar took just before that photo! Do let us know if it is as you remember it.

B

I will. Just waiting on the mail

D

I placed a tin of black watch in my last order just based on the name (sounded good). It is pretty different from anything I’ve tries so far strong leathery smell upon opening the tin and once taken it mixes with something like a spearmint. Although interesting its not for me unfortunately. I will prob be putting it up for trade here soon

B

smell like horses. Horses that have freshily washed equipment. That’s the best I can describe it. A strangily medicinal smell. I still love this snuff. What an amazing snuff in my opinion. I take it’s kind of slightily diffrent take on Jockey club very floral but in a leathery soapy way. Reminds me of when my hobby used to be leather working. No wonder I love it so much.

J

I’ve just dug my tin out again. It’s pretty amazing stuff. Not for every day, but still…

B

yeah I have not had another snuff like it. Definatily the jewel in the dean swift crown. This is my second tin as my first one years ago was right before they discontiuned it. :(. It was the first snuff that made me think holy shit this can be a true luxury.
