I’m sad to say my first snuffbox is now dead. 'Twas a Walnut 2D from Patrick Collins, and I do believe it has been killed. At first it was just getting a bit loose, but I could still fix it with the many handy remedies you guys have posted. Sadly, they’re no longer enough, and if you so much as hold it the slightest bit off the horizontal, it’ll leak snuff out the lid, while the lid itself flies off at a hair touch. I wanted to mention, aside from weather, I’ve noticed particular snuffs have an impact on the lid. For example, Jaxon’s English Toffee would always make it loosen up whenever I filled the box with it. Anyone else notice certain snuffs that make their snuffbox’s lid go loose like that?
I have been using a Tripletech box for about a year now. I have had no issues with the sliding top being as loose as you have described. However, I have noticed that the box is sensitive to the surrounding humidity. Perhaps try taking the lid off and leaving the box out on the vanity while you take a hot shower. This may impart just enough moisture to the wood to help seal things up a bit. You might need to do this every day. The alternative would be purchasing a new snuffbox.
On my Tripletech the side lid where the spoon and taphole are became loose so I did as Pieter suggested and put a very small amount of super glue on the sides of the lid, let it dry and now it fits perfectly
@shikitohno, before you discard the box, try mending it with super glue. Apply layer after layer until it’s tight again. Make sure the glue is dry before you try the lid, otherwise you might have a super tight box which is closed for ever and a day.
Not going to discard it, it’s just no longer a carry box for me. And I think this may well be beyond super glue repair, Pieter. There’s a gap of several millimetres between the lid and the rest of the box in some places. I think this may be a combination of the dry NY winters and slight warping. If you hold the box in front of a window, you can see sunlight around the edges of the lid.
Humidify the lid so it will expand to match the box. Use the Walnut box for drier snuffs. There are better woods for moist snuffs, padauk being my favorite. Rose wood and teak also handle moisture better than other woods. The zebra wood that I have has also impressed me as a better snuff box.
I have a Padauk, Oak 3D and Zebra wood. The Padauk in my opinion is the best and the Oak is also very good. I had to fix the Zebra a couple of times but it’s still serviceable. I also have the big Heart Wood walnut which is perfect, the lid might even be a bit tight sometimes. But I live at the seaside with high humidity which might help keeping the boxes healthy
My collins tripletech oak is in the same boat as shikitohno’s box. hold it up to a window and you can see light through the gaps around the lid and it leaks snuff like crazy. I has actually been this way since about 2 months after I got it. the lid warped upward at both ends, bowing from the middle. I’ve tried the shower thing, different moisture snuffs…so on. It basically is no good for carrying anymore. I think I will just be buying metal from now on since shelling out $30 for a wood box that only gave me 2 months of service is a bit frustrating. I live in PA so it may be an issue of climate similar to shikitohno’s since PA and NY share similar climates
I’m quite satisfied by my boxes. Most are over a year old. I’ve had to use the shower trick only a handful of times. I have learned to avoid using moist snuffs in them though. I fund the zebra the worst for this. I have not tried the padauk for the moister ones, but I think I will now. I’m in the same climate. I think the snuff used has more of an effect than the climate. Moist snuffs seem to have a paradoxical drying effect on the boxes. It must fuction something like eduction. I think moist ones as they lose moisture to the air, wick moisture away from the wood along with them.
That makes sense. I will try the shower trick yet again and see if that gets me anywhere, if so then I will use it for dry snuffs only. I thankfully have a handy collection of snuff bottles I E-bay’ed from China so my carrying needs are met with with those for the most part, but they are a pain to fill.
My PC box is just a bit tight, which I consider a blessing. But I’m hoping that doesn’t become a bane in the summer when the humidity hits the 90s and misery sets in. If so, I’ll just retire the box until next winter. It’s a beautiful thing and I love holding it.
I don’t want to put anyone off ordering a PC box. I’ve still got a double and a tripletech (had another double until I lost it…) that work great. I’d definitely recommend his boxes for people, I just want them to be aware that this may happen to some of them. Seems to be a weird idiosyncrasy of the box/wood.
Too bad there isn’t a way to order replacement lids. the lid alone has been the problem on mine from the get go. Like I said I love the box itself with a passion but within 2 months the lid bowed enough to string it and shoot arrows, it’s a great tabletop box now to sit beside my laptop and scoop from but would mean brown pockets if I carried it. I do so love the box itself though but I suppose a list of available spare parts would be kind of impossible since the tolerances would vary from one box to another.
