This is the most bizarre snuff I have ever seen or tried. I don’t remember why I decided to order it most likey curious. I got 12.5 grams and it came in a wierd unecessarily bulky plastic container that was 4/5 full and the whole that the snuff comes out of had plastic strips that obstuct the snuff from coming out into a nice pile into my hand and instead makes it sprinkle like pepper and ruins my pinch. The snuff itself is pretty bland (like the label) and clumpy. Can anyone talk me in to likeing it or at least not hateing it?
I love it and don’t mind the container. Tip the container over and give it a sharp tap. upright it carefully and sniff directly from the grid. Or just decant it into glass and pinch. Herby verbena and vinegar essence. Totally unique.
This was actually my fav of the de kralinges I’ve tried. I use it a lot. I like plain snuffs, but this has a little bit of spice flavor to it that I can’t place that sets it apart. I don’t normally pinch so the tapbox design doesn’t bother me. The slats are a bit anoying, but I’ve abjusted.
This is the one with the valerian in it, if remember correctly. Yes, I was fond of the flavor, although mild. Also I found the valerian relaxing (not sure if its the same as valerian root). The vinegar added a nice tang. The boxes are generic spice boxes that are used for all sizes, so in some cases they are not filled to capacity. I don’t love them either, but some find that the grill can make the especially coarse snuffs like A/P a little finer. My solution, besides decanting, is just to pop the top off entirely and squeeze my fingers in and pinch.
I see that it is well liked. Just not my cup of tea as they say…I’ll pack it up and try it in a month or so as lunecat suggested. Deffinitely going to switch it to a different container.
I’m with you @nervousrhino I can’t stand the De Kralingse smaller containers and the snuff is always so dry when I get it I don’t know if the large containers are like that or if it’s different.
@horus92 they are all in the same containers except the 100g bulk (in jars) and the occasional 3g samples in zip bags. Not sampled from bulk myself, though about 10 are on my wishlist, I’ve read that they are good and well sealed.
I mean my main question would be are they all that odd combination of coarse and dry I’ve found in the smaller tins? Because that’s what really doesn’t work for me, the scents are lovely.
No. If obtained fresh, they are usually so wet you could wring them out like a sponge, at least the Latakia ones - the others should be reasonably moist. Try rehydrating them. If they still have flavor you should get some good results.
The 100g containers seal well, are readily accessible and present one with a much more flavorful option than the little tap boxes - which I defintiely do not like. a distinct ‘bump’ in flavor from the larger containers.
Yes, Valerian is used for its alleged sedative and anti-anxiety effects. I gathered from the website that vinegar is used to extract the flavour from the plant. Perhaps we should not operate heavy equipment or motor vehicles after using this snuff.
had to dig in my freezer to find --wanted a refreshed view. to me it’s ok. one that might grow on me someday–but for now --just a once in a while guy. molens snuffs have spicy thing going on that is hit and miss for me. i make orders to get the macuba mostly and a little HB. throw in a new one or two each time. the gingerbread is very nice and was surprised by cocco cream as a nice desert snuff. strangely, i haven’t tried the latakia ones–but will next time. i’m glad i got mettaijer --it’s one you might get a sudden craving for. ever wake up in the nite wanting sardines and crackers?
@all: Thanks for all the comments. As for the containers. They are originally desined to pack spices. We got them from our former sponsor and within a year or two they are all used up. Till that time you have to do it with the suggestions above. Jaap Bes.
Went back to it the other day just for something mild and moist after too many shots of White E. It wasn’t that bad I popped the lid off and just took some pinches out I enjoyed the change up. I won’t toss it I’ll leave it for a once a week type of snuff.
I think that’s not doing full justice to a sophisticated snuff with a subtle scent unlike any other I have tried. A wine vinegar extract of Valerian leaves is not exactly the commonest snuff flavouring out there… it’s not overpowering in the way that many fruit snuffs are, and there’s no hint of artificiality or “soapiness”. Truly excellent and I dare say unique… I’ve even got a spare tub stashed in my bug-out shelter. Of all the M de K snuffs I have tried, this is the only one that had a tendency to clump, inhibiting smooth egress from the container. I prefer these spice containers to SG tap tins, but in this one case I had to transfer the snuff for ease of use. I would add that I obtained my Mettaijer direct from M de K ensuring freshness; a subtle snuff like this might suffer from poor storage if obtained from an intermediary. I noticed an intriguing new snuff on the M de K website: Herbmstedt’s Brazil with Kashubian Sauce… how exotic is that?
Been away from the snuffboards and -boxes… And then snuff turns out to be a sleeper hit among all my happily nicotine appreciating friends. I’ve weaned them on some Poeschl stuff (flavory menthol kick, seems to hook people) and last week I ordered a new pack of Kralingse Snuif… The realization came: everyone I’ve had try some snuff stuck with it, and I gave away my entire stash ;D Friendly meet-up after 3 months, to make some music, and see them casually popping out a red Cherry Mint or orange-black Coffee tin I gave them. “Hey, I got some new Kralingse Molens snuff, local stuff… How’s rose oil and cognac sound to you?” Back on topic: the sauce is a mystery to me, but oh my how I adore it. I tried the original as well, it’ll grow on me. I’m sure. I’ve sampled enough snuff to gauge general rotationability upon first try. So much flavor, it’s layers upon layers. This is the crucial difference with oily Poeschl stuff, which for me tends to be precise and punchy, doing one thing very well.
Although I believe DeK’s fanbase has been mostly US/UK so far, I’m actually glad to see that the locals are starting to appreciate it and be proud of it. Maybe some of your friends want to give old Jaap a hand on Saturday mornings running the mill. I know I would, if I lived there.
Just cut out those strips in the hole.

Filek said once: “To give the historical aspect of this snuff, the Hermbstedt’s recipe for the Brasil was found in a Polish magazine for rural population from 1821 - being a reprint from dr Hermbstedt’s book in German. It’s actually a type of snuff called “false Brasil”, since there’s no Brasil tobacco in it. But the recipe is brilliant, since thanks to Jaap and the millers of Rotterdam, we can now try something that smells like a long forgotten Brasil snuff - of the best quality - called ‘legitimo’. What goes for the Kashubian sauce, it’s from an etnographic work from 1835. Feel the first half of the nineteenth century. Priceless.” https://snuffhouse.vanillaforums.com/discussion/comment/281497#Comment\_281497
To date I have thoroughly enjoyed everything Made by Jaap Bess and the millers of Rotterdam, may they live long and continue to be the productive geniuses that they have shown themselves to be!!!
