Cross-contamination experiences

S

Most of us have learnt (painfully in most cases) that there are some snuff varieties that must be stored apart to avoid cross-contamination. Last Christmas I pop opened one of my vacuum jars to sample a year-old tin of Tq “Christmas Pudding”, stored along with other 5 Tqs and two DKs, “Latakia Ao 1860” and “AP”. All of them were OK except for Tq “Peanut Butter”, that has mutated to “Pine-clove-burnt”. Not bad anyway, but very different from what it should be. So, apart from Menthol/Medicated snuffs, I´ll add DK “AP” and TQ “Christmas pudding” to be isolated from the rest of “inmates” in the storage cells. Have you suffered from Cross-contamination issues? Share your experience.

C

Only with medicated/menthol snuffs, which I store in a separate cooler. I have several igloo “ice chests” that I use to store snuff, cigars and pipe weed…all separate. The only ones in total isolation are those in the medicated category.

B

No. I decant into glass bottles.Best investment I ever made. All my snuff is as fresh as the day I decant it. Sorry for your loss

J

I have found cross contamination to be mostly superficial and easily remedied by separating the culprits.

M

I have not had this problem although I store many types together. I had the problem with some legal pot I grew ( I live in Colorado) , then stored in a drawer that a bundle of Nag Champa incense. It turned that particular weed into an incense scented, but still very potent final product. The other plant I harvested and cured in glass jars is still in those jars and will remain so. Lesson learned the hard way. BTW, I store most of my Indian snuffs in a cigar box, and they have remained distinct in their aromas, even the Madras snuffs which are stored with the Gulab Sugandh Rose and Horse Brand snuff I bought from last years “Indiansnuff” member who has vanished at this point. Like B Shaman recommends, I ought to get glass jars for all my snuff, but I’m too cheap and impoverished, not to mention lazy.

S

Not cross-contamination per se, but I made the mistake of taking some Poschls Gletscher Prise and a short while a pinch of Gawith Apricot- the result was a revolting, almost gas station scent that seemed to chase me for days. Those two scents for me should never cross paths.

D

the general rule for me is keep my menthol and other such “medicated” snuffs in a separate tub… do they then contaminate each other ?? Who knows as all I smell is menthol anyway

M

Packard’s Club is specially dangerous…

N

I once stored McC English Menthol with Attar of Roses and now the English Menthol reeks of roses but the Attar of Roses has not a hint of menthol

I

I stored a heavily scented snuff in one of the plastic snuff boxes from Mr. Snuff. When I was done, I cleaned it thoroughly, several times over. I have a pretty good nose and I couldn’t detect any leftover scent. I cleaned it AGAIN, just to be safe. Filled it with a toast and within a day F&T HDT had traces of SG Firedance. Somehow the scent stayed in the plastic just enough that I couldn’t detect it but enough that it made its presence known when another tobacco was packed inside.

Like most everyone else, I keep the menthols separate. I store open tins (with the lids on, of course) together in the same glass jar and have never detected an issue.
