Since my wife was in a good mood I stole borrowed appropriated her crockpot. I took some Dark Air Cured Kentucky 171 Burley, stripped the mid-rib, ran the leaf through my office shredder. Sprayed it generously with a 4% solution of distilled water and Maldon sea salt, filled the pot and cooked it on low for ten hours, spraying & turning occasionally. At the end of ten hours I had an interesting variation on the Cavendish theme. A deep dark, almost black, gummy tobacco. I’m trying to sun dry the tobacco, but it might be too humid. KY 171 is a large, thick leaf variety, air cured and loaded with nicotine. This batch was harvested in 2012, barn cured for two weeks then baled. It is hand harvested and this is the second priming. From the look of it I’ve got some good snuff headed my way. I may need to blend it with some Oriental and/or Red Virginia to balance the basic flavor profile. Not sure if it will take to scenting but should make a nice rappee style plain snuff. I doubt it will mill to an SP fine grind, might be a little gritty and sticky. Only time will tell.

Sounds great Chefdaniel, hoping you will post an update once it’s ready? I’ve only been snuffing a year, but can you imagine a cigarette smoker discussing their own blend?? This is one of the many reasons snuff has so much to offer in my opinion.

@Franknsnuff‌ Thank you for the kind words and a belated welcome to a hobby you will enjoy for the rest of your life. It is too humid for sun drying despite being near 100 degrees, so into the house with a fan to dry it out for milling. Definitely headed for a coarse semi gritty grind. I’m toasting some Izmir and Red Virginia leaf in a 150 degree oven, almost ready for blending. Will keep ya’ll posted. Unfortunately my camera is kaput, so no photos.

Cheers!

Izmir! Delicious choice Daniel

@Nikolaos‌ Izmir is wonderful in snuff, especially toasted ever so lightly. It adds a nutty, sweet, tart and light tobacco note if used judiciously. I’ve been known to take a good pinch of it straight. Strictly in the interest of adherence to the scientific method of course. It wasn’t something I’d make a regular indulgence, but it’s great as an ingredient. Cheers

Hmm, our crock pot has a removable crock and we have 2 crocks. could use one for snuff only. I’ll have to check into some tobacco.

J

I just let the crock pot dry it out.

Also interesting to see him using tobacco during his ritual and it being a filtered cigarette and him smoking it down to the filter. Progress? @chefdaniel. Now you’re making me hungry!

I need to get another crockpot, while the base is drying out the crockpot has been conscripted into toasting duty* for the seasoning tobaccos. Otherwise it would make a nice drying device. *She Who Must Be Obeyed didn’t care for the delightful aromas emanating from the oven when used as a tobacco dryer. My advice to her to have a few pinches of WoS Raspberry (her favorite) was met by the dreaded and possibly fatal “Stink Eye”.
