Critique my order

I found out several years ago that I like SP. A lot. Since I use snuff as a surrogate when I can’t smoke, I just bought a load of SP snuffs and thought the matter was settled. I have now decided to broaden my horizons, so I placed an order with Mr. Snuff, and am now sitting by my mailbox patiently waiting for it to arrive. I used snuffhouse heavily when choosing my snuffs, it’s a magnificent resource. There’s always room for more discussion though, so I’ll list what I ordered, and I’d like some opinions, experiences etc. Wilsons Rose of Sharrow Wilsons Kendal Brown Wilsons Princes Wilsons French Carotte Wilsons Morlaix I’m particularly excited about the rose. I have never tried rose snuff, but I like Turkish delight  I’m hoping this is a winner, because if it is, I’ll be buying some rose essence and experimenting with my home made snuff.

My critique: you will wish you ordered more. Happens everytime I open my orders and chain snuff all the new various goodies!

I know! I placed my order literally three hours ago and it’s still not here! I moved here to the States four years ago, and one of the few things I miss about England is the ability to just walk into a shop and buy snuff :frowning:

My critique would be to try something other than Wilsons, especially for the varieties chosen, and since you want to broaden your horizons. For Morlaix, French Carotte and Princes I would have gone with the Fribourg & Treyer. The WoS Morlaix is another snuff altogether by comparison. For Kendal Brown, I would have gone with Gawith Hoggarth or Samuel Gawith. Again the WoS “version” is another type of snuff altogether. I also agree you’ll wish you had ordered more.

This is my critique, but take w/ a pinch of salt because who can say what you will like? Wilsons Rose of Sharrow - not tried it Wilsons Kendal Brown - nice enough but not a real KB Wilsons Princes - OK but I prefer f&t princes special Wilsons French Carotte - I hate this stuff. Like an old granny’s talcum powder. Wilsons Morlaix - ok I don’t think you’ve picked Wilson’s best snuffs here but that’s just my opinion and I don’t wish to piddle on your parade so to speak. I hope you enjoy them.

I chose Wilson’s for the simple reason that they come in 10g tins. I love F&T snuffs (Irish D Light being my second favorite to SP) but I didn’t want to buy 25g of snuff that I might not like. My last order was three tins of F&T Irish D-Light, and before that I had the luxury of buying from a shop in Britain, so I stocked up on SP before leaving. Even though they don’t have a great selection, I really miss being able to pop in to John Hollingsworth in Birmingham on my way home from work :frowning:

Question: if I like the snuffs that I bought, is that a good indication that I will like, for instance, the F&T version better, or are they completely different beasts? For instance, I tried some HDT from a maker that I can’t remember (black plastic tap box) and that was enough to prompt me to order Irish D Light, which I REALLY like, ie it was similar but inferior to the F&T version.

Good question. With French Carotte and Princes I would say yes. In those two cases only are the snuffs of the same name comparable. The F&T Princes is probably a bt more complicated than the WoS one. I actually prefer the Princes Special. Also SG has a very noteworthy Princes, though its a bit smokier and coarser like their rappees. The WoS Morlaix I’m not sure what’s going on in the WoS one. Its nice, rather SPish, but is really very much nothing like the F&T version. With Kendal Browns, both the F&T and the WoS are KBs in name only. They’re both ok snuffs, but not particularly memorable. The WoS one even uses the basic WoS flour; only the scenting is new. The Gawith Hoggarth (2 versions) and Samuel Gawith (4 versions) are all proper KBs and quite distinctive as a unique style of snuff. Any 6 of those are representative of the style and can be compared to each other for their various qualities. It must be pointed out (I always feel the need to say this) that if trying one of those KBs be sure not to buy it in a tap box or you will have a box of what will seem like gunpowder. Get them in the 25 tub or vac tin. Your final comment about the toasts has me a bit perplexed though. HDT doesn’t come in a tap box at all. It comes in an F&T screw top tube. Irish D Light is a Samuel Gawith product and comes (sadly) in tap boxes. Both are good toasts though, and the same style but different from each other. My preferred snuff in that style is actually the WoS IHT #22, though.

You know, I was going to try some Toques but I was put off a little by the price. I had a pretty strict budget, and I essentially wanted to try the largest number of snuffs possible within that budget. I opted to buy several smaller and cheaper tins to get more variety. I do have a method to my madness though, and I’ll be placing regular orders. I’ll get all the bases covered eventually. The Toque SP and Quit are two of the snuffs that I’m pretty sure I’m going to settle on long term as I like SP’s and plain snuffs. I felt that it was more pressing to broaden my horizons than buy a couple of ‘no brainer’ snuffs.

@Xander You were right to be perplexed about the toasts, I got them mixed up! It was Irish D Light in the tap box, and that made me like toasts enough to try the F&T version (which is vastly superior). Sorry for the confusion, but at least you helped me remember which toast it was that I first tried. I won’t bother buying it again though now I have tried the F&T version.

@doctorbeat the Toque 10 for the price of 9 deal on 10g tins is a pretty good way to get a lot of exposure to some variety and the Toque Natural Toast is on a par with the F&T HDT. And the 10g tins make pretty good snuff boxes.

Rose of Sharrow is pretty good, Wilsons’ French Carrotte is just okay IMO. I’d get a broader variety next time like everyone else is saying.

Oh yeah. In case my critique sounded a bit mean its not meant to be, and its true Rose of Sharrow is a great snuff, one I keep in bulk. Its always a good choice. haven’t met a rose snuff I didn’t love yet though. The WoS Morlaix has something of a rose character to it.

Lol not at all! I’m not new to snuff, but I am new to flavor experimentation. I don’t really know why it took me so long to be honest, I think it might be because I have started to enjoy snuffing much more lately due to not being able to smoke at work. I used to think I was happy with SP and HDT, and I don’t keep 20 different flavors of cigarettes on hand, so why do it with snuff? It used to be an occasional stopgap, but now that I am using it several times a day, I see the merit of experimentation. I’m also very interested in the history of snuff, so I shied away from the more ‘obvious’ flavors. I’m sure apple, orange etc are nice, but I was trying to get more old fashioned ones this time. I could have sworn I put some Old Paris in my order but I guess I accidentally left it out. The main one I wanted to try was Rappee, but it was out of stock :frowning:

If you like SPs and want to try a Rappee=type snuff, give WoS Best Dark a try sometime.

Will do. I’m already compiling my next order

and watch out for missing commas, you don’t want folk to think you were a pathalogical liar, lol: “I don’t really know why it took me so long to be honest, I think it might be because I have started to enjoy snuffing much more lately due to not being able to smoke at work.”

 that’s what I get for typing on my phone…

It arrived today! Is that some kind of record? So far I have tried: Rose of Sharrow: Nice. A little ‘chemically’ at first, but that have way to a very pleasant rose scent. Definitely a new favorite, and one to try from other manufacturers. Kendal Brown: Weird. In a nice way. It has a very familiar scent that I can’t quite place. This is exactly how I felt when I first tried SP, and the intrigue kept me snuffing it and led to enjoyment. Very sneezy for some reason! French Carotte: My favorite so far. I wish I had bought a much bigger tin! Looking forward to trying the F&T version. Again, can’t place the scent, but that is what will keep me coming back. A definite keeper. I haven’t tried the other two because my head is now spinning from nicotine. I’ll update later

I just went ouside and I thought ‘don’t the flowers smell nice?’ Then I realised that I was smelling the rose snuff still. This stuff lasts!
