Critique My Next Snuff Order

I’m new to this ‘sport’, have sniffed my way though some samples, read reviews and , following the lead of several of what I consider to be the more experienced noses in this forum, I’ve compiled what seems to me a favorable prospective list of snuffs for my next order. Tell me what you think, and you’re welcome to make suggestions as to adds/deletes/substitutions. This is going to take me through the Summer months at the current rate I use snuff. So here it is…hit me: Railroad Mills Swisher Square Toque Whiskey and Honey Toque Toast and Marmalade Toque Original Toque Spanish Gem Toque Bourbon Toque St. Clements Wilson Apricot Wilsons Tom Buck Wilsons Irish High Toast Wilsons Lemon Grove Wilsons Burgundy McChrystals Stam Hophen Snuff Quit with Snuff Apricot

Well, if you’re a newbie, be prepared for pain. You have mostly advanced and expert level snuffs in there. Definately keep Hopfen. Its nice and easy, and has a uniquie flavor. The Wilsons ones won’t give you trouble once you get the basic sniff down. Tom Buck can be a little stingy but High Toast will burn. You have 3 toasts in there, since two of your Toques are. Unless you already know you like toasts, I’d pick one of the three, and get some more variety. Railroad Mills is a strong scotch. It has a lot of burn. Square I don’t know it. I’d pick one scotch only. I’d add a Fribourg & Treyer (you seem to like citrus so find out which one is citrus like). Toque Grapefruit is great citrus. Toque Pomegranate is the best fruit snuff ever! (though some disagree with me for some reason). You have no Pöschl products, so either you don’t like them, or you have some already. They are usually recommended for beginners. Depending on who you order with, you might want to get one from Bespoke, de Kralingse and a Bernard Schmalzer.

I too would recommend some of Bernard’s Schmalzlers. They are very easy to take, and have no burn. But based on your list I can assume you’re ordering from Nicotine Rush, and I don’t believe he’s got any Bernard. F&T Old Paris is quite nice, and moist enough to allow for easy sniffing by a beginner, it’s a bit pricey but worth it. I would also recommend Rockit Cherry Pop, it’s got a bit of menthol to it, but is also easy to take and tastes great. You could also consider Wilson’s Prime Minister. It has a lot of menthol, but won’t fly into the back of your throat like some of the others you’ve got picked out. It’s one of my favorites.

Thanks to those who have responded so far…good feedback that I’ll certainly take into consideration. I do have Poschl Packards Club and Ozona Raspberry ,like then very much, but use tham sparingly more as a treat or daily ‘closer’. I hope the PC doesn’t become scarce here in the USA, as it apparently is in the UK. I found a local source for it, and the Ozona, but that’s all the Poschl they carry. I believe I have the snuff technique down pretty good, having little trouble if any of the Amer scotches I’ve tried. RR Mills is clearly my favorite of the plain Scotch snuffs I’ve tried. The flavor and nic are strong enough that I can get by with fairly small amounts, a factor I like about it compared to others which seem to fade quickly in my probiscis. To much RR Mills makes me dizzy.

Well Z (may I call you “Z”?) It seems you know what you like already. I that case I recommend doing what the rest of us try to do: try everything! Now maybe only a handful of people on this board have managed this great feat, and it will take you awhile. I wager you’ll have fun getting there though, I sure am. I think one cool thing that the ISTA could do when it eventually launches is to create little certificates for people who get hundreds of snuff varieties under thier belts. Something like The Wine Century Club or The Travelers Century Club. For the former you must drink at least 100 different styles of wine. For the latter, you must visit at least 100 different countries or territories. Both are based on the honor system, but its fun. I’m working on being in both.

Something very wrong with your order; where are the DHOLAKIAS?? No snuff collection is complete without at least some Manjul, Kamal, Ganga and Sparrow. Add them to you order and go ahead, I agree with all else that you’ve got on your list.

yikes, Pieter! the poor lad’s nose will already be an inferno with all those scotches, toasts & Spanish Gem. Start with the easy ones, I say. I know its good snuff, but I still have a hard time with my Sparrow Cool. (ouch!) Then again he says Railroad Mills is a top pick too, and that one always gave me pain, so Z, are you a masochist? LOL

What a great list! You have some real classics on there as well as the Toques that are fast becoming modern classics. Armed with that array I would have a very pleasant summer. As Xander says, they are not the automatic choices for a new snuffer but as you say, if you deal with the US Scotchs ok then you should be fine. As Pieter says, you might balance it out with some Dholakia - both the name and contract brands (ie, made for the individual stores and then sold under a brand name) I would add to the list: Dholakia Sparrow Cool Dholakia Aniseed Menthol Fubar ‘Grunt’ (contract brand for Mr Snuff) If you want to blow what remains of your head off, try some ‘kamal’ too - the most intensely flavoured snuff in existence. Also, if you are getting some McChrystal’s, it would be a sin not to inlcude OandG, the snuff that made their name, no finer menthol. Make sure you post some reviews as you work your way through it all!

I would recommend some Dholakia Sparrow Green Label, and pretty much everything else that the others have said. The Green Label is great… mmmm…

I need some Dholakias also. I only have the Aniseed Menthol, which I do like alot, oh, and I do have a few of the Dholakia made snuffs(Rockit, Blast, Wow!,Temptation,Fubar), so I guess in essence I do have some, but I don’t have those other original Dholakias.

You might want to try a floral and a menthol snuff. To be honest, everyone will give you different advice depending on their own personal preferences. Part of the joy of discovering snuff is discovering it for yourself. Experiment with different styles from many different snuff makers.

buy what sounds good as you get experience more will sound good.

For me the opposite is true, my taste has narrowed down to a handful of types and brands. Maybe Im just weeeeeird…

I think I will be like snuffster, I buy and try them all as I can, but certain ones will be re-buys and most won’t.

I’m also moving towards tapering down my collection. I have to much snuff. Period. I’m making a list of my real favourites and are planning to stick to about 30 different snuffs. I’m really confused at present, don’t know what to sniff next. Space is also becoming a problem. I like things neat and tidy and everything in it’s place, not the way it’s now where I have 8 plastic contianers bulging with tins and boxes.

I keep all of my US snuffs in a large zip lock bag, stacked on each other. My others I keep in a large rubbermaid box made to hold a casserole. My SG and Poschl tins are kept on their side, my Toque and Wilson tins are the same way. You would be surprised at how much snuff can be kept in one of these boxes. I’ll keep buying what sounds good. At the moment I am trying to get most of the snuffs not available in the US (Taxi, SG, Jaxons, and others). Once I have them, I will slow my purchasing down.

I have 2 plastic containers for my snuff I keep in the drawer of this desk I have the computer on. I have 16 cans coming in the mail, and I currently have a total of 64 snuffs, the majority being full on bought cans, and some sent to me shared samples from other snuffers. There is so much snuff variety available, and as I mentioned before, it’s relatively cheap, so a few orders, and one can have 100’s of items.

I’m starting to feel a little overwhelmed with all the choices myself. I have so many, but I always go back to a dozen or so. It’s like I’ll never catch up, so maybe I should stop trying.
