Hi there, I’ve just received my first “premium” snuff order of Sir Walter Scott Crème de Figue and Field of Junipers and gosh aren’t they just fantastic? I’m tempted to say they’re in a whole different ballpark to my other snuffs. I suppose time will tell but CoF in particular I can’t keep my fingers out of! I had a quick search on here and notice some discussions a year ago that people had found mold in the first batch, which @Johnny seems to have dealt with great care. I read a post that said the ingredient causing it has been isolated and removed. Could someone concern this is the case and it’s not a problem anymore. Specifically is there still a recommendation to keep this one in the fridge? I’m kind of hoping not as I feel like I’d like it on hand all the time In my new snuff career I’ve not liked toasted snuffs at all so far, and I have to say that FoJ is the only one that’s managed to change my mind a little. Also, is Auld Alliance a toasty one, or more like CoF? Not that I’m at all tempted to spend more money…
Finally, I live in Scotland. Do Sir Walter Scott take visitors? I just wonder if one day I might be passing and I’d love to see how it’s made…
Auld Alliance is similar to CdF but its base is a blend of different tobaccos, an “alliance” of tobaccos =P~
@Johnny insisted on recalling all of the stock of the initial batch of CdF so your snuff should be from the new batch and there should be no problems. As you have said the problem was with one of the ingredients and the mould was caused by that rather than storage / temperature issues so I am 99.99999% sure that you do not need keep it in the fridge. My stash is stored in the original jars inside a plastic box inside a drawer so it is in a fairly cool environment and out of the light but certainly not chilled. As @n9inchnails has said the Auld Alliance is similar to CdF in terms of the coarse grind and level of moisture. The aroma is different from CdF but equally rich so if you can’t keep your fingers out of the CdF then you will probably have the same problem with the Auld Alliance.
Glad to see that Crème de Figue is back in stock
Thanks for the reassurances. I have to say that my opinion is now that CdF is the most wonderful substance known to humanity! There was a thread recently on what snuff you would keep if all the rest disappeared, and I have to say that I did have a passing thought last night that if all the others were lost in a nuclear catastrophe or zombie invasion, I’d still be ok as I had my Crème de Figue
Polly - I am delighted you enjoy CdeF and FoJ. Thank-you for your very kind comments. There was, regettably, a problem with some of the organic leaf in the first batch of CdeF, but I can confirm that this has been isolated and completely eradicated in all further batches. With regard to keeping CdeF in the fridge. It has been suggested that those who live in very humid countries should take that precaution, but as Chris has mentioned, a cool dry temperature is ideal. I have found the best way to maximise the flavour of CdeF, is to remove a quantity from the jar into a snuff box and keep the box in a pocket where the snuff will benefit to body heat. Johnny
Thanks for your reply Johnny, given that I also live in Scotland I think I may be able to therefore do without trips to the fridge I tend to try to warm snuffs on the back of my hand or between my fingers before taking, and to be honest in the case of CdF, the fragrance is so strong and wonderful I don’t seem to need so. I am not a smoker or ex-smoker so my only regret is that I can’t take much of that wonderful fragrance in before my head spins!

Of course you don’t need to keep it in the fridge, that’s because you live in a fridge
