Cornwall, the weather and SP 100

Ive just got back from a very wet and windy Cornwall (the leg of the UK for US buddies and others). Now Cornwall - which despite the weather - is one of my favourite places on Earth but it is a desert in terms of snuff, apart from one excellent shop. If you are ever in that vicinity and have run out of your usual then make tracks for JJ News which is on the main street in the village of Helston. A great selection of snuff and tobacco. About the only brand not on sale was Toque, so Roderick should maybe get in touch. Anyhoo, from the good selection of WoS snuffs I bought 3 large tins of SP 100 - a snuff I reallly wanted to get to know again: WoS SP 100 ************** The first thing when you open the tin is the usual feeling of ‘why on Earth do WoS package in that way?’. The snuff overflows and you loose some however careful you are and the tins are tacky and held together with a completely irritating adhesive strip. However…this is really good snuff. In terms of grind and general body it’s very like Toque. Its a rich brown with a medium nicotine hit. I have my silver snuff box open in front of me filled with this snuff and the aroma is rising gently as I type. There is a sharpness to it that really penetrates and I get multiple notes of bergamot, citrus, jasmine even. This is a classy snuff and for some reason it doesn’t seem to be on our radar. Order a can or two online guys, you will like this one.

One of my favourite snuffs. Very underrated IMHO. Stefan

Snuffster, check with Ermtony before your next trip to Cornwall. He knows all the best spots for snuff there. Ahhh! I just took a nice pinch of SP 100 since you brought it up. Its very nice. Its so fine and slippery, its tricky to pinch. It reminds me a bit of the Rosemary from Wilson’s. It also has a character which reminds me of my old Smith’s Lemon.

I use the slightly obsessive/compulsive drop, tap, drop, tap infinitum method to keep that from happening. If it’s a new tin, it always gets opened in my kitchen, with a few pieces of paper under. WOS really needs to replace that sticky tape with something else. There are adhesive strips that come off very cleanly.

Cheers Xander, I will ask him the next time I visit - we often have short vactions there.

I need to try more WoS varieties, and I’ve a few more coming to me, but not SP 100. I actually pull my WoS sticker off of the crumby tins and then place the sticker on an empty, clean Toque can, then transfer the snuff. Works for me. I’d love to visit the UK, too.

If you do get to the UK Matthew make Cornwall a part of the visit - it’s a beautiful place, just don’t spend the entire time in the West end of London! I would put WoS alongside Toque as the best two snuff manufacturers in the world - just my opinion of course.

Yes, there’s a shop on Bond Street in Redruth with a moderate selection as well, but Carroll’s in Helston has more. I make a point of visiting every time we’re down there, but of course I missed the trip in August thanks to the pot on my leg (should be coming off a week on Monday).

Aahh, thats a shame as I was in Hayle and not far from Redruth, Ill check it out next time.

@snuffster: I’ll definitely keep it in mind! A brief image search on google confirmed that it would be a place I’d love to visit! Thanks!

It’s sold that way so you will buy a damn snuffbox.

At least the shop in Helston stocks the Wilson’s boxes. I bought one for my son-in-law last time we were down there.

“I would put WoS alongside Toque as the best two snuff manufacturers in the world - just my opinion of course.” @Abraxas‌ @Johnny My how things have changed in a few years. You are now the best two snuff manufacturers in the world, and I doubt you’ll get any disagreement from members of this fine forum- just my opinion of course. :>

This is a pretty ancient thread, you must be working your way back to the start of Snuffhouse to have found this one! Thank you for the kind words which I really appreciate Daniel, but I couldn’t put myself even remotely in the same league as the world’s best blenders - I have not accomplished enough with my handful of snuffs to deserve that accolade. If Abraxas is still in business in three hundred years time I might accept the compliment though

It is refreshing to see an artist such as yourself with such a humble nature. Abraxas will be around in 300 years but unless science invents something incredible we won’t be around to enjoy. I hope to pass the hobby on to my grandchildren. My son is well on his way having graduated from “candy” to the real deal snuffs. He did provide some good laughs as he learned the ins and outs of HDT. Cheers Daniel

WoS is still one of the two best snuff manufacturers in the world. You can all choose another one to go along with it.
