Anyone make their own wooden snuff boxes? The reason I ask is that I was recently handling a sample of a countertop material called Corian. I have no woodworking knowledge or skills, but apparently Corian can be worked just like wood. People turn pens out of it and use it to make knife handles. I saw some off-white samples that look very much like ivory. It is a dense material, and makes a satisfying ‘clack’ when two pieces hit each other. This stuff would make an awesome snuff box. It would be air tight, and not prone to swelling/cracking/warpage like wood.

Awesome idea doc, my parents house has Corian countertops. It would probably work great, like with a high quality rubber gasket to seal it or something like that. It would also, like you said be sturdier than wood and less prone to breaking if it is stepped on/sat on.

I have worked with it in the past, good medium, A strong router should perform most of the work well.

Corian can be brittle if you make it too thin. I make guitar nuts and saddles from it sometimes. It will break if you get it too thin. It also smells like burning plastic when it gets hot from sanding or drilling. It will sometimes warp when it gets too hot in these situations. Let us know if you are successful!

I don’t have the tools to make a snuffbox out of this, but if a good snuffbox could be made out of Corian that would keep moist snuff from drying out without warping the box, I would be the first in line to buy it.
