I stopped by a tobacco store I frequent in Kentucky today and they got their first delivery of Cope WG. It comes in the traditional cardboard tins. My first impression was that it was slightly sweeter than most wintergreens I’ve had and almost reminded me of a mouthful of the Chicklet gum with a bit of a minty taste. (this dip doesn’t get hard after 5 minutes, though!) Very good dip and recommended at least to try. I did find it interesting that the bottom of the tin stated a Sell By Date instead of the Born On date that I remember, or am I crazy? My tin said Nov. 29, 09. From this, I can figure that this tin was probably packed a few days ago and Copenhagen is judging their cardboard packed tins have a shelf life of roughly 1 month. I’m interested to here others opinions.
Your not crazy, just bought regular copenhagen last night, and it has a made on date. I actually stopped in to buy the wintergreen because I noticed on the promo sign that it was expected November 2. The guy said they just guessed, but the tobacco guy actually stops in ever Tuesday. So, I’ll stop again today and see if it came in. Hopefully it also comes with a promo price.
Gotta get me some. I’ve started seeing it down here.
Inroductory special price of $2.09, BTW
Up there maybe, but down here the taxes on Tobacco are sky high.
Bart, according to Copenhagen, their dips have a shelf life of 12 months. The tin you’ve just bought was thus “born” on Nov’ 29, 08 and is just about expired.
???Dang, Pieter I will say expired Cope never tasted this good
All I can say is US smokeless has improved there method for packaging in those cardboard cans it it lasts a year. I could always tell a big difference when it was 2 or so weeks old.
@Pieter: The Copenhagen Wintergreen has only been out for a few weeks, so that’s impossible. Usually, Copenhagen puts a package date on their product, not an expiration date. Something tells me that store clerks were selling out of date Cope, so they have switched over to an expiration date like with snus. Edit: Copenhagen’s specifications: 100% American grown tobacco Introduced in 1822, Copenhagen snuff is the original brand of moist smokeless tobacco Date on bottom of can is the made date Shelf life is 4 weeks
@Chris and Bart, I was only pulling Bart’s leg! I know nothing about Copenhagen and will/must accept everything you say about it.
Why I oughta…!!! LOL! You got me this time, but look out…
Well, I just picked up my first can of Copenhagen wintergreen. And yes, it does have an expiration date instead of a made on date. It’s also got a 1-800 number to call and leave comments. And, like I said, I got regular copenhagen yesterday, and it still has a made on date. I think this might just be a tester since they are are unveiling a new product. But, on to the snuff. I’ve only had one dip of it thus far, but I love it. This could be due in part to my love for regular copenhagen. But, considering that I don’t much like the LC, Hickory, or other varieties of cope very much,it’s not just brand loyalty. It is very well balanced for a wintergreen. There is some sweetness, as Bart mentioned, but it’s not overly sweet. It’s not pungently strong like Skoal Edge, but its similar in moisture content. I kind of wish it was fine cut, but it is way better that Skoal Original FC. Anyway, about 8 out of every 10 cans I buy are regular copenhagen snuff, with an occasional purchase of skoal wintergreen or mint. However, if they continue making this stuff, it will be my new wintergreen. By the way, the lid is classic copenhagen elegance. Its gold with raised letters and a really subtle green background with the WC logo
Yes, it is nice! My can is gone this morning… @Pieter My computer wont whisper to you.? Keeps saying there is an error. I was going to see if you’d like to try some of the Copenhagen varieties?
Bought a can this morning… Here goes… A very good dip. Tobacco is soft and easily pinched. Wintergreen flavor is very strong and tasty, only complimented by the tobacco. Yummy, yummy, yummy. Blows the Camel Wide Cut Wintergreen out of the water. Of course, it is a Copenhagen product, so it’s the best there is. Deeeeelicious.
Ah, yes… I see you favor the expired dip as well, Mr. Stokes.
It’s sooo good. I’m about to take the last pinch, very sad.
I put the first pinch in at 8am, last one at 2:30pm. Of course, it’s only 3 pinches.
havent tried it maybe ill grab one today.i love whiskey blend cope, but i always add a little whiskey to it since the mosture speeds up the delivery of nicotine in the longcut plus adds a little more whiskey flavor.i miss cope black the most ,supposedly out of production since last year ,if anyone knows about some old stock of black ill pay top dollar! chris u have issues if u killed a can in 6 hours!2 good dips is enough to completely mince the meat inside my lower lip.sometimes i wonder how u sleep at nite without some sort of nicotine in ur system.i heard u finished a new tin of brutons over the weekend too lol.
@ Bart, my hearing aid’s batteries were flat, so that’s why your computer would not whisper to me. He/she knew I would not hear you. I’ve only used portioned snus up till now. I’m waiting for some los and will have to see if I like it. I’ve only dipped once or twice (I put some Ntsu in my lip, very nice indeed) but that was it. I won’t try it again. What I’m saying is, thank you so much for your offer. I’f I do like the los, I will certainly talk to you and we can arrange a swop. I don’t know anything about Coppenhagen. I do like the US scotches a lot (have some Dental Mild up my nose now) and judging by that, the other tobacco products should also be nice. I love strong tobacco and always smoked the strongest cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco available. Same goes for snuff and snus.
@Nosechaw: I actually stop using any tobacco products at about 5pm so that my insomnia doesn’t act up. Me finish a can of Bruton’s? In my dreams! I think you have mistaken me for Mr. Maroon!
@ Pieter Well, let me know how it goes. I think Copenhagen is a brand you would enjoy for sure, judging by what your tastes are like. Next time I will shout instead of whisper!LOL!
Now we just have to wait until Copenhagen’s Pineapple twist comes out: Wikipedia says it’s expected in late November. Seems like a strange time to launch a tropical blend. I would think that would be more of a summer flavor:Wiki article
Errr… Pineapple Twist? LOL, they sure did go to the extreme didn’t they? I used to associate Copenhagen with something strong and solid. Now I will have to associate it with… Pina Colada’s?
pineapple is a great dip flavor
I have been seeing the advertisements that it was coming soon for a few weeks now. I just saw the dip for the first time tonight. I almost bought a can, but decided against it. My gums have never been happier since I switched from dip to loose-leaf. I still might end up buying a can just to see how it is.
i think cope is trying to capitalize on skoals market,i always say dont fruit the dip…unless it tastes like raisons in my beech-nut .
@M.Moses Don’t feel so bad-my knowledge of snus is only in trying Camel once and I didn’t really care for it. Whenever I read about snus, I see they say to place the snus in the UPPER lip? What is the advantage to this, I wonder, unless the lower get wore down and sore? I believe I will try some of the snus I’ve heard of here on this sight, though. I always just pictured snus like a Skoal pouch for example, but I see the difference seems to lie in the processing of the tobacco in each product. Also, on the part about being discreet and not having to spit-this would come in handy from time to time–but-there comes a time in this PC world we live in with the anti-tobacco freaks, a fellow gets a good feeling when he walks around with a huge wad of chew in his/her mouth, occasionally throwing off a line of rich, deep tobacco juice, and is able to look others in the eye and not be ashamed to use tobacco. I call it my “Expectoration Proclamation”. I have a dream that one day every car will have ‘hill-billy racingstripes’, a cuspidor will be returned to it’s prominant place in every home…well it’s late…I don’t really know where this post is going, so I’ll get off here. But, yes, you should try some of the American dip and loose leaf if you are interested.
cause a country boy can survive!
‘spit Beechnut in that dudes eye’ You got it , Nosechaw!
lol -i make my own whiskey and my own smoke 2 aint 2 many things this dam jew cant do
HAHAlol Nice remake! I will say, I would not spit near that nice black Impala of yours! We had a '68 growing up. Off the topic, but I never told you that looked like a fine car in your picture!
thanks on the compliment i put my heart and soul in that thing .id rather drive an old chevy for the rest of my life than a new hybrid weed wacker golf cart turbo diesels any day .had a brand new audi a4 in 2002 ,blew the clutch at 22k and the engine spun all the bearings and locked up at 33k,than i leased a gto 2006 ,now back to the impalas,my third one and last one ill ever sell .even if i gotta put a solar panel on my hood and a windmill on my trunk for government emmission ill do it .ill even grow my own corn and run it off moonshine if i have to !
I gave the WG a 3.5 out of 5 on smpost. It’s quite good and probably the only wintergreen I’d buy with any regularity, other than the one off can of Skoal FC once in awhile. Cope Black was replaced by Whiskey Blend. Not minding the changeover, to be honest, but why do they insist upon keeping Cope Straight in their range? It has to be the most nauseating crap on the market.
Snus comes in pouches but also in loose form. The reason, I think, for the upper lip, is reduction for the “need” to spit. With snus, you don’t spit, or don’t have to. I find a snus in the top lip to be comfortable, not obvious to outsiders, if that matters, of course I have a dirty wizard going on. The loose is molded, it has a clay-like consistency, and stuck in the upper lip.
thanks Tom502! btw, what’s a dirty wizard?
It’s a reference to Bin Laden, to my beard, from the movie Bruno: http://www.jihadwatch.org/2009/07/dirty-wizard-or-homeless-santa.html
LOL I see now, Dirty Wizard! @ Mr Snuffypants I feel the same way about the straight. Shouldn’t staight be straight, plain tobacco flavor? Seems as though Skoal uses the same flavoring for their Straight. If you’ve ever smelt the dipstick on a motor thats rings are wearing out, that’s what I compare it to–a heavy, un-natural toxic smell. (I wouldn’t recommend going around smelling dipsticks, but you get my point!)
I haven’t had proper dip in many years, but I remember the flavor of Skoal Straight. One of the Bernard snuffs reminded me of it a lot. I think it was the Kostlich. I’m sure Skoal adds some sweeteners but I think the flavor is likely the result of fermentation.
i just found out my buddys mom has 14 cans of that stuff she got from somewhere they were giving them away for free.im gonna jump on his offer .when i get them ill let u guys know and if someone is interested we can trade for something.i wouldnt be able to use half that stuff and i wouldnt want it to go bad sitting around .
Did a search on Copenhagen but this was all I found, So I’ll ask here. Anybody ever use Cope for nasal snuff? I went high and low yesterday looking for Cope Fine cut/Snuff. I live in the Oakland and if you can imagine, there isn’t a lot of dip users around. Bad selection, ya know. But I found it. Not to toot the stuff but to use it like normal. Anyway, it occurred to me that this stuff was pretty close to the grind found in NTSU and other S.African variations. I’m thinking of using that cramming method some of us are so fond of, but I kinda worry about the drip hitting the stomach and well… you know. Whad’ya say?
Thanks bigblue, but I’m afraid I don’t know what bumping is. I must confess this is the first forum I’ve actually been a contributing member of.
Oh, nevermind. I see it. Thanks again.
How does it compare to Thunder Frosted snus? - got a promotional email from getsnus.com that looks pretty decent.
I have snuffed copenhagen a few times, but I mostly do so when I have a little left in the tin that has dried out a bit. But, after I tried NTSU I figured what the hell. I was out one night drinking and forgot my snuff. My buddy had a can of Grizzly Wintergreen longcut, so I decided to give it a try nasally. It wasn’t bad at all. I would say anyone that likes NTSU or Taxi wouldn’t find it all that different.
