I had a small tub which I used for tipping all the dregs into, all the snuffs that were too dusty/fine, and ones that were overpowering or simply not something I’d want to use often. I called it Granny’s Stew. I have revisited it recently and the scents had blended and subdued, and after rehydrating in small quantities, found it really rather nice. With enough hydration, even the snuffs in there that were too fine, all fluff up and become pleasant to use. I have decided to take it a step further. I have got a plastic drum left over from buying some WoS bulk which has now been decanted into glass bail top jars. Into this is going all the larger tins which don’t get frequent use, and which will continue to just lurk in storage unloved and constantly pushed aside as I reach for the favourites. The original Granny’s Stew has already gone in along with two large tins of SP Extra (too fine) and a tin of Xmas Pudding (overpowering) the tins from which will be reused for snuffs which come in inferior tins such as WoS. I’ll be working through my collection over the next couple of weeks and “streamlining” my collection and gradually building up the drum of Grannys Stew with anything I don’t see regularly entering the rotation. I’ll be sticking to the English snuffs for this, as I don’t see that it would be practical otherwise. I hope to end up with a significantly smaller collection of snuffs which I know I can visit regularly, and the one drum of Stew quietly maturing at the back of the cupboard. I figure there’s more chance of the snuff getting used as part of a big crazy blend than sitting in their separate tins. I have about a dozen snuffs in bulk which won’t be affected, and hope to get down to around 20 supporting snuffs in smaller bail top jars which I’ll top my pocket snuff boxes up from. I’ll add to this thread as more snuff gets thrown into the pot

Toque Absinthe, Lime Toast, and Apricot in the pot Seems like I’m giving Toque a rough time, but in reality I’m working through those first so I can salvage and reuse the tins

S

I’m the exact opposite, I mix too but only a tiny bit at a time, I find I might come back to the original flavor later and really dig it.

Point taken, put the ones I’m throwing in are ones I’ve revisited several times already, so they’ve had their chances. If they don’t win me over this time, they go in the pot. Ones where it’s only the first pinch will go back in the drawer for trying again later. I think the snuffs do change after the tins have been opened. I do small mixes too, often with one plain and one scented. Viking Brown and GH Cherry for example

Hmmmm… Well the plan was not to keep anything I can’t snuff regularly or have multiple pinches of … so the only snuffs I keep are ones I can load a snuff box with, even if I have a couple or three boxes on the go … and then I had a pinch of F&T Macouba #-o Wonderful scent, but definitely a once every so often type snuff, and too good to dump in the stew. I know some of the other F&Ts will be just the same :-< Looks like I’ll be keeping a few of the “occasionals” after all 8-|

C

Great idea. I do something like this with pipe tobaccos. “Granny’s Stew” kind of reminds me of the Irish-American anthem “Mrs. Murphy’s Chowder” though

S

I also have a jar of stew (I like the word “stew” for this btw).  Mine mostly comes from dumping out snuff boxes (dregs).  All varieties are welcome into my stew.  I’ve used it to experiment with hydrating methods, and to date it’s really not bad snuff.  I’d compare it to a scented Indian snuff - it didn’t take much Kailash to give it that vibe.

I practically never use it.  I’ve considered throwing it in a bonfire just to see what that would be like>:) .  I’ve also considered getting a tabletop zen garden, just so I can use snuff instead of sand.

The tub is now nearly full There’s about an inch of air left at the top of a large WoS drum. I’ve been through all my small jars this morning, deciding which will keep their current contents and be topped up as needed, and which need to be dumped in the stew to free the jars up for other stuff. Most were single scent Toques which didn’t do much for me, but should all add to the overall stew, and a couple of WoS snuffs too. Toque: St Clements, Rose, Violet, Whisky and Honey, Quit WoS: Rose, Jasmine One of the jars had about 20g of Rustica in, and that’s gone into the mix too to add a little potency. I’ve chucked in some other dregs of small pots that were kicking around. I’ve held off on a couple of others such as Convent Sandalwood to give them another chance of winning me over. I’ve given it all a good mix up and taken a couple of pinches from different parts of the mix. Even though the flavours haven’t infused yet. The scent out of the tub and in the nose, is already more favourable than any of the individual ingredients. It has a floral bias, but you can definitely pick up other stuff happening in there. I’ll stick it in the back of the cupboard for a few months and see what time adds to the overall effect. I appreciate some folks reading this might think it rather wasteful in one sense, but the bottom line is these snuffs weren’t going to get used as they were. It was a choice of flushing them down the pan, using in the garden, or giving them a new lease of life as part of a blend. Once everything has had time to infuse (I’ll give the drum a few tumbles occasionally to help mix it up) I’ll decide if it’s “cooked” or if it needs something else to turn it into a frequently usable snuff.

Roderick calls his Crazy George and has it for sale. The scent is never the same.

5

I think (but may well be wrong) that Crazy George is more of a “Pensioners Mix” type affair. I don’t think Roderick actually tries to blend it to a constant for the whole batch. What I’m aiming for is making one consistently usable snuff from a whole batch of others that I found unusable (with any frequency). Not saying it’ll work, but that’s what I’m hoping for - an all day / frequent use snuff born of occasionals and never agains

After ditching a lot of the unloved snuffs into this mix, including several I couldn’t be bothered to list, this didn’t go as far as I thought to simplifying my collection. After a quick count up I still have over 90 different snuffs =)) I genuinely had no idea I had so many

P

I do the same with the last little bit of pipe tobacco of each tin. I’ve had some really good ones, and some horrible ones.

B

B-)  Over 300 here. I visit them not as often as I should. I do mix up snuff I feel will complement each other :-B. Some times I just use the same snuff all day (:| . There is no certain way you have to enjoy your stash. What ever makes you happy.
I am envious of those who can settle on a hand full of favorites . I do like having variety. And there are always the latest and greatest creations. I am done with being a pioneer snuff pilot due to current  $-)  stasis;But open to test tasting.

Two of the main problems I had with so many snuffs was stuffing going crappy before I’d finished the tin, and also everything kind of merging into one… kinda like Bond films. Too many snuffs to keep track of. I got a figure in my head of how many snuffs I thought sensible. That number was 25. I started writing a list of snuffs I’d want in the core collection (allowing myself to have a few extras at any given time) and ended up with over 50 snuffs on the list #-o Now the target for the core collection is 30, because that’s how many small glass jars I have in the drawer. One for each of the snuffs in bulk in the cupboard below gives me 18 mainstays to choose. However, I can also cheat a bit … well, a lot actually. 1) GH snuffs in the 25g plastic tubs don’t need jarring, so that’s 6 extra 2) I’m prepared to risk long term storage of F&Ts (other than OP, SD, KB, and the two Princes) in the aluminium tubes, so that’s another 6 3) I have space for 10 large and 10 small Toque tins (new or recycled) for the “guest” snuffs I already have in smaller quantities. That’s 62 snuffs in total. If I can get down to that, I’ll be happy for now. I would like to consolidate further at a later time though. I do like the idea of having 20 (maximum) core snuffs, and maybe 4 or 5 guest snuffs at any time.

The Granny’s Stew is now officially full. I just managed to get a SG Gin and Tonic and a GH Convent Sandalwood in there. I have also been ruthless today in rooting out all the many snuffs that have been lurking in my collection that I take one pinch of and bury it again until I’ve forgotten what it was like. I got all these one piece wonders together, and tried to figure out how best to use them. GH Whisky and Ice Liquorice went down the pan. Best place for them Next up was Wos Peach Melba and Viking Peach. Not a fan of these, but decided to try to make them usable. I took another plastic drum and threw them in with about 20g each of Celtic Talisman and Firedance (both of which I have in bulk anyway) as modifiers to see if I can start the makings of a Fruit Salad mix. If WoS Lemon and Lime doesn’t win me over next time I try it, this will likely end up in there as well. Finally, mix number three. Coffee and Mints. These are snuffs which in their own way were a little too much for my nose. I have kept a couple of favourite separate such as GH Wild Mint and WoS Irish Coffee, but all the following snuffs in whatever quantities I had have all been thrown into the Coffee and Mints pot to essentially take the edge off the opposing scent. SG Black Coffee OM Acadia OM Premier OM Fleur de Cafe WoS Crumbs of Comfort WoS Country Mint SG Mellowmint (not as mellow as I thought it was) SG Wild Duck SG Afterglow SG Peppermint Call me crazy, but I think this might just work.

The Granny’s Stew is working <:-P I took a few pinches from various parts of the mix, and whilst it’s not a uniform scent throughout yet, it is very usable. As there are so many different flavours in there, it’s hard to say what it smells of, but it’s not too much of anything. It’s not a powerful scent either, as they all seem to be diluting each other. A hint of floral, a hint of spice etc etc. I think I did the right thing in keeping the coffee, mints and menthols out of there though. The other two mixes need more “cooking” time

5

Just taken a couple of big pinches from the Coffee and Mints tub. Both elements have toned down nicely. The coffee is less bitter, and the mint is less bitey. Each of those two elements have reached a tolerable level, and actually work together quite well. There’s something missing though. It’s as if there’s a void between the two, and in needs something to tie the two together. Unfortunately, the artisnal elements I added have also brought with them the drip that I detest so much. However, being so diluted in the whole, the drip is much less severe or prohibitive than when those snuffs were neat. I won’t really know until it’s ready to start taking a few consecutive pinches from. The main thing now is to work on that missing central note. I think the tonquin from Elmos or Hazlenut might do the trick, but I don’t want to upset the applecart either. I need to think this one through

5

Initial tests showed Elmos works better, so added a spare tin to the mix. No more will be added after this, as it would unbalance the coffee and mint elements

5

Granny’s Stew: Successful and ready to use :-bd Coffee and mints: Almost there… Fruit Salad: Needs work :-? General snuff storage situation: Significantly improved, and large amounts of “unusable” snuff salvaged through mixing. <:-P
