in at least one thread (darned if I know where now) I’ve seen a few references to and phrases like "if you use it this way there are consequences’ I’m talking about the idea of pulling your lip out and pouring it from the lid or using your finger or a stick, etc the comments sounded kind of ominous but vague Would anybody who’s said that (or even just anybody who even knows what that might mean) speak up and elaborate?
Well, it depends by what you mean by “nasal snuff”? But really, I think they are all about the same. American Scotch snuffs have a long history as an oral tobacco, as do the Indian snuffs(as dentrifice). But “dipping” some McChrystal’s O&G, doesn’t sound good to me.
Why anybody would use something in their mouths which is obviously for nasal use is beyond me. Maybe thats my Anglo centric way of thinking but why put something in your mouth that is obviously for your nose? Stefan
I would not confuse definitive with authoritative. Or would I?
I checked once before a while ago, more than half of my American scotches say “This product may cause gum disease and tooth loss” or something to that effect. I’m sure most Americans use scotches orally and they would think we were crazy taking pinches in our noses. Obviously snuff from other countries is made for different purposes.
Its all rooted in history. Someone put it in their mouth, and it just caught on. The reasons for this happening are various and are dispersed throughout the snuffhouse archives. It pays to read old threads.
Mostly southern WOMEN use American scotches as an oral tobacco
The one time I was in Arkansas, I picked up a tin of Honest at a smoke shop. The woman who checked me out asked me, “Are you buying this for your granny?”
Consequences = Cancer
thanks cstokes (so far that is the most direct answer to my question and makes sense now) I was also thinking maybe it might’ve meant possibly higher nicotine tolerance/less nasal use enjoyment (like smoking can do), etc? but I just haven’t been clear on what was meant really (only that I’ve seen several sort of cloudy references to something bad, ‘consequences’ of some sort) the reason I am asking really is because I own 3 american scotches and have a boatload more (of american scotches) on the way (which I like the 3 I have used in my nose) but I also took a major plunge and ordered every single american SWEET snuff MrSnuff stocks – and without ever having sampled one of that type at all… and I was thinking that IF tha tturned out to be a terrible mistake (say I find sweet to be just as miserable as I do the too overpowering floral and fruity non US types I’ve tried) that maybe I could fall back on oral usage, and of the different types there are, I guess I also suppose an American sweet snuff would make the most sense and be the best/most likely candidates for use orally. and in thinking this, I really just wanted to know what any and all hidden dangers I’ve seen being eluded to but not plainly said might’ve been (I wisih I could just find the threads again to ask there or link and show what I mean).
To expand, I read a study of the cancer risk with dry snuff compared to moist snuff. I am speaking of US Scotches, not any other brands. I believe it has to do with the amount of sweetener added to the sweets, and the very high amount of TSNA-thingamajiggieswhatchamacallits.
alright… I’ll go into this (if I do and thats only if I find I don’t like the sweet ones) with eyes open then. Do you happen to know how it compares against cigarette smoking? (would I hopefully not be taking a step back that far at least?)
Well, it’s oral cancer and gum disease. I would assume that it all depends on the person. I found it very boring, no flavor, no kick.
Actual linkage to cancer is theoretical, and lumped in with all the anti-tobacco fanaticism. People get cancer all the time, and never touch tobacco. A large part of it is genetics. But smokeless tobacco is like 95% less harmful than smoking. The cancer causing elements are from the burning stuff inhaled.
A lot of it is russian roulette. When tissues are damaged, they repair themselves by making new cells to replace the detroyed ones. Everytime that a new cell is made there is an extremely remote chance it will be mutated. Repeated damage will cause the mutated cell to replicate, itself beleving it is the correct version. It spreads throughout the tissue, so we call it “cancer”. The more damage exposure you have, the more times you are playing russian roulette. You may never lose, but you might. So how long and how often you do it are important facotrs. But genetics, and the new science of epigenetics reveal more about this all the time. Your genome and perhaps more importantly, your epigenome, can give you better or worse odds in this roulette game. But by all means, try dipping. Its certainly less of a long term risk than smoking. I have a little every now and then, myself. It can be boring at first, especially if you are used to moist dip, but do it for three or four days in a row, and I bet you start to crave it. Bruton is wickedly strong. Most of the sweet ones are on the weak side. The USST sweet ones trend strongest though. All have a distinct flavor: some not that good, some boring, some interesting. Its not a habit most will jump into. There’s not much instant gratification involved, like when snufing snuff. If you still don’t like them, there is always the trades thread.
I dipped the scotch snuffs a few times, not a lot, never emptied a can. But I didn’t find it bad, but the powder cut is a bit hard to enjoy, I thought, even though I think I contained it pretty well. Not long ago I tried moist snuff dip, emptied about 10 cans, found I like the Natural flavor best, and long cut over fine, but the small dip cut, I found I didn’t care for. So now, apart from portion snus, the only other oral tobacco I use, and like, is loose leaf chew.
I doubt very much that using even 10 cans orally would even make a dent in your chances of getting cancer. Xander has a good outlook on the Russian roulette theory of which I also subscribe to. Now, if you took an entire can at once you might see some rather immediate and serious consequences. You could have serious consequences driving to work too. If tobacco was even close to how bad some people make it out to be there wouldn’t be an industry. I mean seriously…the stuff has been around seemingly forever in various forms. I think it’s well agreed that smoking it is the WORST by far yet I smoked nearly 110,000 cigarettes in 15 years. Wow, that’s a lot. In the past six years I’ve had less than 100. Trade it if you don’t like it rather than using it for the sake of using it. Life is too short for that.
I’ve tried only Black rappee and Taxi Red as dip and they were good. But wouldn’t do that regularly, I mean, we have snus, chewing tobacco and dip especially for oral use so why bother? Besides lid of a Taxi tin says Causes Cancer TWICE so it must be true.
@AllanH: It says it twice because after a good pinch o’ that stuff, your vision will go hazy and they want to make sure you read it.
The first one cancels out the second one, so you’ll be safe.
