A lot of new snuffers feel that they are doing something wrong when the dreaded bunged-up nose happens, so I thought I would start a thread and maybe we can help with a few tips. First off, snuffing is not a natural thing to do. Sure, the nose can deal with a lot of stuff being breathed in on a daily basis but a pinch of snuff is more than its ever been used to before. Congestion is normal and happens to most, if not all, snuffers past a certain point. Snuff taking on a regular basis leads to a nicotine addiction, or services one if you are using snuff to get off other forms of tobacco. Like with all addictions the tendency is occasionally to over do it. Even a 40 year veteran will get bunged up from time to time and it is nothing to worry about. But you can do a couple or three things to help: Highly flavoured or mentholated snuffs as well as things like schmalzer can be very congesting. If you are packing things like this all day you can expect to get a bit stuffy. A change to drier, plainer snuffs can often help. No way about it; a course snuff is a lot easier for a new nose to deal with than a HDT or Scotch, but those dry ones often cause less problems. If you don’t feel up to dealing with a Scotch, you can always start half way with things like plain SPs or snuffs like Toque Natural, and use these for part or all of the day. To blow or not to blow? There are no rules, just do it when you need to. Trying NOT to blow, because thats what ‘real’ snuffers do is a bad idea and will stuff you up. A good rule of thumb, if you need one, is a gentle blow ten minutes after a pinch. There might be some chapping but like any other bit of skin, the nostrils harden up eventually. You can cleanse using a neti pot or aerosol saline spray if you feel like it - a lot of snuffers swear by doing this. Nasal sprays: after about 10 days these will mostly cause rebound problems so try and avoid them. Changing snuffs or technique can all help. With technique; try taking a larger pinch than normal and insert it just beyond the opening of the nostril; surprisingly it can help, although I’m not 100% clear on the reasons. But, in the end, the best practice is to learn your limits and use snuff in moderation.

Great tips Snuffster! Bravo!

thanks snuffster … always good points … i think blowing your nose when necessary is key … as well as a “cleanout” w/the neti on a regular basis.

“Like with all addictions, the tendency is occasionally to over do it.” True, true, only the occasionally is every day.

yep, me too.

I’m one of those snuffers who swears by the twice-daily saline rinse. Doesn’t matter if you use a neti pot or other method. I prefer a plastic squeeze bottle. I also keep plain saline spray handy for odd moments when I’m feeling congested. Snuffster’s point about changing snuffs is an excellent one, too. If you keep track of what clogs and what clears you (and it can differ from one snuffer to the next), you’ll know what to reach for.

Hi, I’m new to snuffing and still getting the technique right. At the moment, I get some down the back of my throat every so often. Is this dangerous or normal? Thanks for all your help!

T

It’s normal to get some in your throat every so often. I do all the time. It might make you sick if you get too much, but there haven’t been any side effects that I’ve noticed except for the occasional gagging lol Don’t snuff so hard- do it from your nose and face down when you do it and it’ll cut the air off through your throat

K

Thanks for that Transistor - just sniffed more gently…much better…no burn either now, just pleasant smell and taste

@kayjay777 You don’t want the snuff to go past your septum. You want it IN your nose, not up in your sinuses like cocaine. (sorry to mention but it was the only example I had.) Also as @snuffster says, take massive pinches. I pinch as much as I can and then *sniff* do it all real quick. This minimizes the burn (that I actually like but…) and increases the scent and nic hit substantially. There’s an entire thread on it: http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/comment/164776#Comment\\_164776 Ever since I read that thread I’ve refined my snuff taking and benefitted greatly. Check it out. Happy snuffing!

Lots of good advice there, many thanks.

All very true. I consider that I know how to take snuff but I still get the odd pinch wrong and get a bit at the back of my throat. But with practice it will be very rare. People have various methods but I always think the best is the pinch for control. And taking double or treble the amount you think, as a new snuffer, you can cope with will reward you by less burn, more flavour and a nicotine hit sufficient to kill a cigarette craving.

I use the back of my hand and sniff about a lima bean size pinch in each nostrial. That for the smalshers (sp). tired, flaged 15 hours today. Toast and scotches and fine dry snuffs get about a pea sized pinch.
