Colour of Indian Snuff

W

I was wondering if anyone knows what the process is to produce a black or white coloured snuff?

B

Black color could come from the aging process , heat treatment, added oils,or dyes Whites not white but light in color is from sun dried leaf stems. I cannot document this since I had not witness the process. Recalling from various sources You could PM @sixphoto Or @Manit_Joshi representing Dholakia They are more qualified to shed light on your inquiry.

I’m curious about the black color as well. The “white” Indian snuffs I’ve seen (Dholakia and White Elephant) are actually more of a khaki/beige that seems pretty natural looking. But those black ones (i.e. Kailash) are black as night without a single smear of brown (they sure smell delicious, tho). Maybe it’s from intense fermentation? That’s just a wild guess…

Last time this was asked, it was said that the blackening and, the whitening is a close guarded secret. I would be interested if we get answers this time though.

I’m guessing charcoal

They add a little bit of ground up Black Hole to it so the light gets pulled in and doesn’t bounce back. Fiendishly clever lot, these Indian snuff makers.
