coarse variety wanted

As it seems to be impossible to get Samuel Gawith boxes with moist/coarse tobacco in decent condition, I might be buying a tub. As I want to feel sure that I like the variety I order, I’m asking you guys for a recommendation. Here’s my “profile”: snuffs that I like and don’t irritate my nose: - Bernard Feinster Kownoer - Bernard Offenbacher Cardinal snuffs that I like but irritate my nose: - Fribourg & Treyer Santo Domingo - Wilsons Brunswick - Wilsons Princes snuffs that I don’t like and don’t irritate my nose: - all Schmalzlers - Bernard Gekachelter Virginie snuffs that I don’t like and irritate my nose: - Wilsons Best Dark Is there anything else I should try besides the ones from SG?

Well it looks like every snuff will have a 75% chance of either you not liking it or it not liking you. That’s not very good odds for gambling on a drum. For me its not so much a gamble, as I get along with about 9 in 10 snuffs. Nonetheless the dark snuffs from SG I have tried, and like them all: Scotch Black Black Rappee London Brown Princes Dark Cob Dark Kendal Brown Plain Dark rappee snuffs and Kendal Browns seem to be Samuel Gawith’s specialty. They are very different from Wilsons dark snuffs. Be mindful that Cob Dark and Princes Dark are perfumed somewhat. Most of them are very smokey or peaty, and quite rich. Wilsons are more astringent. Read reviews of those and others at snuffreviews.com. If something sounds like you would like it, you may find clues in someone’s review. Its probably borderline heresy to say, but I’m starting to like Gawith Hoggarth’s Kendal Brown Plain better than Samuel Gawith’s now that I’ve had it fresh. Both are excellent though.

@Snufffranzl: If you’re patient, MrSnuff has indicated that he might be getting Samuel Gawith vacuum sealed tins in stock in a few weeks. The snuff should be in much better condition than in the tap boxes. Xander’s right, your odds of success in splashing out on a tub are fairly low !

One word; NTSU!!!

More words: NTSU black.NTSU Menthol. Fasten seat belt before sniffing!!

@snuffranzl know what you mean regarding the “evil tap boxes” and how they do dry out the snuff. Have you ever ordered your Samuel Gawith from snuff.me.uk? Every 10g tap box of SG I’ve ordered from every vendor has been dry to mummified. Those ordered from snuff.me have not been so. Recent SG Apple I got from there was no different with respect to moisture, scent, ammonia even, as what one finds in a bulk purchase. It appears that Jay and Jamie move enough SG stock it doesn’t have the chance to dry out. Give them a shot with the tap boxes before you invest in bulk. As for a recommend on SG, Kendall Brown Original and Scotch SP hth

Well, I fear the NTSU could kill me. I have never smoked and thus my nicotine tolerance is fairly low. A medium-sized pinch of Santo Domingo makes me dizzy. @OTD The SG web site says Scotch SP is moist & fine. Are you sure you meant this one?

Thanks OTD- i will have to hit jay up too theres a few i would like to visit fresh not dried to no end… :-/ and snufffranzl - I think OTD was just making some recommendations to some good flavors bc the Scotch sp is pretty darn good.

Oh yes snuffranzl , that was simply a generic recommendation regarding the SP Scotch. As for your original query regarding a coarse snuff, KB Original! Both are current mainstays for me.

If not NTSU, than try Babaton Blue. Its not mentioned as much as NTSU or Taxi, but has a nice flavor, and I suspect its Nicotine levels are not as high as its ornery cousins. Moist and coarse, as African snuffs are, but not much coarser than Princes, IMO.

I haven’t tried any of them (yet), but aren’t many of the “Dutch Windmill” (e.g. De Kralingse) snuffs on the coarse and moist side? The guru behind those snuffs is a member here too, as I recall. Several of the Bernard’s are also coarser, like the “Zweifacher” (although I believe that contains menthol, which might irritate your nose too). F&T’s “Princes Special” is also quite coarse and moist, but I don’t know if it will irritate your nose like the Santo Domingo did. The advantage of F&T snuffs is you can buy a modestly sized (25g) tin direct from Wilsons to try out pretty cheap, and personally I think most of the F&T snuffs are fabulous.

Bernards Aecht Altbeyescher Schmalzler or Bernards Doppelt Fermentiert are both course and will not burn your nose, for that matter any Schmalzler (eg Poschl Perlesruter), but some of them are too sweet and fruity for me like Poschl Dopplearoma D. OOPS! Just read you don’t like schmalzlers.

Try WoS Burgundy

Perhaps Berwick Brown from Toque?

Ever thought of F&T princes. My bedtime snuff. Very soothing and relaxing. No nasty surprises. Coarse and moist but dont pinch too hard or you will squash it. Sounds silly but you will know what I mean when you use it. Comes in 25g tubes.

Thanks for your suggestions. I think I will wait for the result of Mr. Snuff’s effort to stock tins. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll order a tub of Kendal Brown Original and maybe trade some of it. I just don’t want to trust SG’s tap boxes. However, my Feinster Kownoer also dried a little bit in the tap box (it’s water-based) and now I like it even better. I will also have a closer look on Berwick Brown and Babaton Blue (wow, four capital Bs in five words!). @snuffster I just had a look in my Burgundy tin and to my surprise it is coarse! Didn’t remember that. But it’s too floral/sweet for my liking.

How did it work out Snufffranzl, as i have the same sort of taste as you.

I second the recommendation of Toque Berwick Brown. It’s medium coarse, very reasonably priced, and has a light fragrance, so you can fully enjoy the fine tobacco base.

Gawith Hoggarth Kendal Brown. Super smooth on the nose, coarse but fluffy. Not loads of flavour, just subtle smokey/leathery hints. Also Cafe Noir, a similar grind and moisture level, very smooth on the nose and flavour lasts forever with that one.

I tried GW Rappee but it was a bit too peaty for me.
