Coarse Snuff Taking Advice Sought

Some of my favorite snuff scents are in more moist coarsely ground snuffs. I unfortunately am yet to find a way to truly enjoy them as I do not like the wet, full, and loose feeling inside my nose. I really really like the scents found in SWS Thrice Brewed and Creme de Figue, and OM Premiere (I mean they smell phenomenal); but can’t get the same satisfaction that I get with drier more finely ground snuffs because of the way they sit in my nose. I find that OM Premiere is a little easier for me to enjoy because it’s a little more of a medium/coarse grind. Will I begin to appreciate coarsely ground snuffs and the full loose feeling inside the nose as I become more experienced with snuff? I want to take these snuffs constantly, but don’t because of the aforementioned reasons.

Try pinching the sides of your nose after you’ve had a pinch–a post pinch pinch if you will :)) That will keep it from feeling loose and/or falling out. Hold it for a few seconds and that should do it. I’m working on a few “compound” snuffs; a medium coarse mill and a finer mill with the same scent. The finer grind will give a good initial hit and the coarse grind will stay around a lot longer and should alleviate that problem. I’ll keep you posted

@chefdaniel the idea of a compound snuff is a great one. Please keep me posted. It could serve in the way you mention in your post, as well as, a transitional option for someone like me who needs training wheels for his nose when taking coarse snuffs.

I totally agree with @chefdaniel as noted above. I have also found that for me, I get best placement taking coarse snuff from a spoon, gentle sniff… then the pinch. I seem to just get better placement of ‘the goods’ that way, where I prefer a pinch for a fine grind. To each their own right…

A ‘compound snuff’ seems easy enough to achieve via blending existing snuffs, though I commend @chefdaniel‌ 's efforts to make this commercially available. I’ve done it myself to great effect. I mostly pinch Viking Dark these days, but when I recently ran out, I switched back to Viking Brown, of which I had a considerable backlog. The Viking Brown alone didn’t do it for me after using the Dark for so long. Needed a bit of smokiness. So after mostly filling my box with Viking Brown, I topped it off with a few pinches of any American scotch I had on hand (Standard, Square or Three Thistles worked great). It both scented and kicked up the Viking Brown to just where I wanted it. Don’t be afraid to blend your own from what’s available. I assure you that you can make what you’re looking for easily enough!

@Jim‌ rub the snuff inside your nose rather than sniffing it, your septum is the best stop I find for coarse snuffs or very fine snuffs and you get a great scent that way.

@puffpuff‌ That’s a great idea. I have a soft spot in my nose for dark fired Kentucky but it’s so hard to find in commercial snuff I started making my own. The hard part of compounding a snuff is finding the right ratio of coarse:fine in the blend; too much of either defeats the purpose. My first one will be Cherry Bomb, and will be ready in a few days. I had estimated mid November, but I let the snuff tell me when it’s ready rather than try to push things along. Despite the name it’s not a fruit bomb snuff, it’s got some great tobaccos in there so it would be a shame to overpower them with scents and flavors. The coarse element has deep flavors from a variety of dried cherries and eau de vie. The finely milled element is brighter with fresh fruits in the same booze. I used some charred cherry grilling planks I got at the hardware store for part of the aging/fermenting process, so there are some delicate, subtle burnt wood/smoky notes weaving in and around. There’s a goodly portion of Marasca Cherry liqueur in the blending as well as some whole toasted *mahlab seeds infused into pure grain alcohol (of the homemade variety-this is Tennessee after all, I have to do something with all that corn besides feed it to the livestock). For more details, IM me here and I’ll email them to you. * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahlab

I spent some time with a couple coarse snuffs this weekend and am really starting to come around to them, especially Premiere and Thrice Brewed. I used the spoon and then pinch the nose method, which is naturally the method I use. I also tried the placement (rub) method using a spoon. Instead of sniffing from the spoon; I carefully placed a small pile of snuff inside the nostril. Thanks for the advice @Skell18. This method is probably going to become my go to method for coarse snuffs, as it lends itself more to the gentle, soft, slow characteristics of most coarse snuffs. Here comes another one of my horrible analogies: Dry fine snuff is more like a shot of liquor to me while moist coarse snuff is more like sipping a fine liquor. I don’t see myself using coarse snuff much throughout the day, but more as an evening option for relaxing in the living room… making it something to look forward to instead of being used as maintenance. Thanks for all the advice everyone and @chefdaniel I look forward to Cherry Bomb.

@Jim‌ That’s a great analogy. Perfect sense to me.

Pinching the nose certainly does work, but the only way you can be sure of stopping SG Black Rappee falling out is to stand on your head.

SG Black Rappee isn’t really snuff. It’s a gift from the gods for those of us with latent masochistic tendencies and the ability to invert oneself while eating, drinking and having a lovely pinch. I love it, but it only gets a visit on special occasions. Like those times when rednecks scream: “Hey Ya’ll!! Watch This!!” =))

Interesting thread. I like Premire very much, and all the coarse ground snuff from SG, especially Black Rappee, KB Plain, Lavender Dark. I like the idea of a compund snuff with both gros and fin together. As others have mentioned, one can achieve the same effect by mixing or taking various types at the same time. Thats what I do. Some Black Rappee, quickly followed up with something finely ground. I like the effect. But then again I’m sort of a snuff junkie, so I always like whatever snuff I’m taking.

Interesting indeed. I tend to prefer the coarser snuffs, the slow release of nicotine and flavour just works for me. That being said I’ve come to enjoy very fine grinds too, and I use the anatomical snuffbox for all snuffs, adjusting my throat and nasal power (?!) accordingly. I guess different techniques work for different people!

I think one of my issues is that I cross the streams, in Ghostbusters terms. I tend to take coarse snuffs at home in the evening. The other thing that tends to happen most nights is an increased rate of snuff taking as the night goes on. I usually end up having a take every 10 or 15 minutes from 7 or 8pm up to bed time around 10 or 11pm. It’s kind of like a marathon that ends up in a sprint before bed. I don’t know why I do this? It has just become how most nights unfold for me. I get home around 5:30pm and hit the coarse snuff right away, sit down and relax, and then begin something for dinner. I usually have another take or two before and after dinner, and about a half hour before the more medium/fine/dry use begins. I can’t power take coarse snuffs, but I can and do power take fine snuffs. I’m going to make a conscious effort to use coarse snuffs as a way of reestablishing some of my snuff habits. I need to slow down and relax, but for some reason at night… I get squirrely and just start snuffing uncontrollably. Maybe I need to start drinking more bourbon? Sorry for the stream on consciousness ramble.

@Jim I’m a firm and faithful member of the More Bourbon Brigade. I do it out of civic duty. The corn farmers, distillers, coopers and transportation logistics/infrastructure employees need job security. My county and state need the tax revenue and my doctor enjoys my company. As an organ donor I am certain I can provide some medical research facility with all manner of interesting research projects when I draw the curtain and join the choir invisible. As for snuff intake, I am one of the most self indulgent snuffers you’ll ever meet. If it feels good. Do it. I generally start the day with a Madras. Move to HDT and SG Black Coffee and then all bets are off. Toque gets one hell of a workout on a daily basis. Evenings are for Abraxas and Sir Walter Scott. I test my own creations as they develop. Then I smoke a briar or a cigar, take a large pinch of Dreamcatcher and pass out, usually in the vicinity of my bed. =))

Another trick with coarse snuffs is to wash your nose out with water before you take them, with your nostrils still wet. The snuff turns to mud and stays where it should.

I have a similar habit @Jim‌ as at night I snuff every 20-30 minutes after work until bed. This after not snuffing at work all day most days. I just enjoy it more in the evenings!

Maybe they should make nose plugs out of Black Rappee…

Like others have said here, pinch the nose after taking coarse snuff. I love coarse moist snuffs.
