I’ve decided I’d like to try some of the coarser, darker varieties from Wilson’s of Sharrow, since I’m enjoying the Kendal Brown from Samuel Gawith. I’ve found at least 3 but the descriptions and reviews seem to overlap quite a bit, and I was wondering if anyone here could shed some light on the differences between the varieties. So far, I’ve found: Best Dark, Brunswick, and Princes in their line. If I missed any, please let me know that too. Thanks!
Brunswick is black, coarse and flavoured with citrus and rose. The Princes has an identical tobacco base, but is flavoured with gernanium predominantly. Best Dark is flavoured with bergamot and is not as dark or coarse as Princes or Brunswick.
And all three are great!
I’ve not had the Princes, but I’ve had F&T Princes, Princes Special and Smith’s Princes Dark. All three are in the same family (in moisture/grind) as Brunswick. Rich and loamy like potting soil. Beautiful snuffs! Best Dark as sandy says is not quite as dark or course, but its very good. Another I can recommend is Burgundy, which probably is reasonably close to Best Dark (moist, less course)
Burgundy is a great snuff; one of those that I always think of as being an ‘old fashioned’ flavour; best taken in a Gentleman’s club with dark panelling and a glass of cognac!
