I seem to remember having a Coal Tar scented snuff (or at least one that smelt like Coal Tar) at some point in the past few years, but I can’t for the life of me remember what it was? Can anyone shed any light on the issue? Much appreciated!
Dean Swift Black Watch sounds about right. Black burning rubber if ya dig.
Thinking about it, it may have been SG Black Rapee, but I’m not sure. Has anyone got any on the go at the moment and could tell me?
I had some SG KB Special not too long ago in a tap box which I thought smelled like coal tar.
SG Black Rappee definitely has that delicious coal tar flavor. That would be my vote.
@Mr.Nose I think that must be it then. I remember loving the smell/taste but not getting on with the grind and moisture. I’m typically an SP snuffer, medium to fine, dryish snuff whereas the Rappee was very coarse and pretty moist if I remember correctly? I had it from a tap box though, so I’d like to try some from a tin for comparison. @crullers I’ve had some of the SG KB before, but not the special, is there much of a difference? I tend not to get on with the ‘soapy-ness’ of the KB type snuffs in general.
SG Scotch Black or Black Rappee both have that scent.
@Koba22 I haven’t tried any of the others, I got it in my first or second order before I knew about the evils of tap boxes. It turned me off Kendal Brown snuffs but I may give some a try in a proper tin in the future. I just recall thinking it smelled like the dust at the bottom of a charcoal bag.
Just wash with Neutrogena T/Gel and you can just sniff your hair all day. It has coal tar in it. Seriously.
What ever floats your boat. I didn’t make the connection with the SG but now I do; two of my favorites SB&BR. Good choice to load a box with.
You could always stick a few flakes of Wright’s Coal Tar Soap up your nose - it will cost less and keep your nostrils clean! I like the smell of coal tar, though I associate it with ‘bathnight’ in my childhood in winter in an unheated bathroom, ugh!
@AustinAllegro I actually wash with Wrights, I was after the snuff because I love the smell so much! Nothing else gets you feeling quite as clean… @basement_shaman I know its a bit of an odd scent to want, but it reminds me of my heritage (mostly miners etc) and as I said above I love Wrights soap. Maybe I’m just a bit odd? I think Im going to have to add some SG Black Rappee to my next order (a tin of course).
Nice to see Wright’s soap is still available! (I live abroad so a bit out of touch). Pear’s glycerine soap is gorgeous too - I suppose it’s hardly surprising us snuffers like all the nostalgic products!
Annoyingly, Wright’s no longer actually has coal tar as an ingredient, in spite of the soap being around for over 130 years due to European Union directives banning the use of coal-tar in non-prescription products, they had to take it out and just replicate the scent. I love the smell of it, I was suffering from a bit of a depression once and my girlfriend bought me a bar as a surprise because she knew I loved the smell, and having that scent back in my nose really gave me a lift! I’ll have to try the SG Black Rappe, and maybe Black Watch too, if I can find it.
Also, Viking Dark has that coal tar type scent.
Latakia is the complete doppleganger of coal tar for my nose. The old Tranters latakia reeks like an old bar of Wrights soap, don’t know if it’s still in their range or not.
So to me I’d probably think coal tar smells like latakia then.
Probly.

So Molens Ao 1860 might be worth a try, then?
Probably but bear in mind that’s how it smells to me, so you might not get the same effect, plus I’ve not tried 1860.
