I’ve read that people sometimes used to put a coin in their snuff box. The idea was that if your snuff gets clumps in it, you can break them up by closing the box and shaking it- the coin rattles around and breaks up the clumps. I sometimes rehydrate snuff with saline nasal spray, and this sometimes causes the occasional clump. I’ve taken to dropping a stainless steel ball bearing into the container, and it works really well. Not only does it get rid of clumps, but it gives the snuff a nice fluffy texture. Does anyone else do something similar?
I rehydrated a batch the other day and it was insanely clumpy. I use a similar method to grind my own snuff (ball bearings in a rock tumbler) so I just threw the batch in there for an hour and it was perfect. I love the texture that stuff comes out of there, and with my bearing sizes (6 x 1.4", 2 x 1/2", 1 x 1") it doesn’t pulverize it to death either. It’s a medium grind that is easy to take, and it doesn’t seem to powder pre-ground snuff either. My load of 1/8" bearings made a grind akin to HDT. The only thing I have found about fluffing rehydrated snuff is the bearings get pretty damn messy if it’s kind of a moist batch. It seems like it wastes a bit of snuff, which is a crying shame.
I just break up clumps on an as-needed basis with the spoon on my pipe tool.
pipe tool or finger works just fine for me.
