Hey guys, sorry if this has been covered already but I was wondering what the closest scotch is to F&T’s HDT. You know, that straight-up clean tobacco flavor. Thanks!
Either Starr or Stokers.
Tops is a very clean one, less smokiness than others, but HDT it is not.
I’m sure the Americans with their much more extensive experience of Scotches will be able to suggest something, but having tried half a dozen Scotches I’d have to say that none of them were anything like the British toasts.
Agreed, I can’t think of one right off; HDTs have a strange (to me) sweet-ish scent. In fact, Garrett Sweet kind of reminds me of a toast (but with added honey, of course).
Starr is the least scotchy among the scotches. I don’t think it bears much resemblance to F&T HDT, but it could pass for a generic toast in a blind test. If you are looking for another snuff that you will also like, then its worth it to pick up a scotch or two. If you are looking for a more economical substitute for HDT, then you will be disappointed.
I will start on a Uke song, "There will Never be Another F n’ T HDT "
“Another one hits the toast:” desiknow: “Is there another toast, is it just fantasy?” Yep, sorry for a form of hijack, but I had a case of substitution quantification. Just get the real deal, I mean I should’ve figured century of tradition, even in Toque’s case.
In fact, the question is a little upsetting.
Interesting thread I think. I had just commented myself not but slightly before this thread was started that the F&T HDT reminded me of one of the Scotches I have. Still have not gotten around to to trying to identify which one that may have been yet. Sounds like a weekend project for me (-:
HDT mixes well with a plain Scotch like RR Mills, Navy or Starr.

I haven’t found any US scotches that compare to HDT, or indeed any British toast.
Just finished going through my Scotches. Square seems to have the closest thing to similarities with the F&T HDT. More of a lighter, oak smokiness than the other Scotches. But definitely not the same. Don’t know what it was I was thinking of earlier when I thought the HDT reminded me of a particular Scotch. It does seem ‘rougher’ or heavier on the smoke aspect than other Toasts, but still more Toast than Scotch. S’pose it would be more accurate to say that the Square puts me in mind of the HDT! (-;
Closest to my mind is Jand H SP No 1, although I don’t think any of them are really close.
Toast and Scotches, while in the same vain, are two different animals. And even though the Scotch probably became what it is from the Toast, they should be viewed as seperate items. Each has its shining star in the bunch. For me the standout scotch is Stokers Plain, and of course a standout toast is F&T.
