So, I have a spot left open on my next order and want to try a SP. I have never tried a SP and was wondering if there was one that sets the standard for all others. If not what would be a good starting point in my SP endeavour?

I agree with all these. I think Best SP is a good starting point since its somewhere between SP2 and Tom Buck on the SP flavor spectrum… Toque original is another one worth a try. It reminds me of best SP but it seems sharper. Not better or worse, just a bit different. Personal preference says try SP extra as well. I haven’t tried very many of the plainer SPs, but I’m sure others would agree on J&H Wilson’s SP no 1 being a must-try if you have any interest in plainer SPs.
Agree on J&H Wilsons, also Gawith Hoggarth SP is nice–flavoursome and easy to take.
Any of them really. They’re all practicaly the same and wildily diffrent too. So really might as well pick one at random if you like it try some more, if you don’t like one get a doctor to check out your nose for major malfunctions.

Definitely the way to go as you have to try the Toque and J&H SP’s as well as Wilsons. All bloody fantastic!
Tom Buck/Queens Extra Strong and McCrystals S’Nuff are my two top picks for SP’s.
I just want to caveat my first post, as I don’t think Best SP is the best one, but to answer the OP it is the one which others compare themselves to.
Toque Original is an excellent SP.
@AllanH That’s my vote too. SP Extra is good, but I think that much of the scent overpowers the subtile joy of Original. There are just so many different scents to pick out, and you notice even more as your nose becomes even more familiar with snuffs. SD Original (also an SP made by Toque) was my very first. I still love it.
I have a tin of Silver Dollar Original. I’m getting ready to get into it now.
So many perfect SP’s and so hard to pick just one. I would pick WoS Best SP, Toque SP Extra, Toque Original and McChrystal’s Smokers Blend.
