When I first tried snuff with a citrus flavour, I did not like it much. TOQUE Original did not appeal to me and I did not like the Grapefruit at all. That was about 5 months ago. Now, I crave the citrus smell and I add Grapefruit to almost all the snuff that I use. I even add Grapefruit to Toque Natural. I snuff Grapefruit “straight” by putting some on the back of my hand. I know it sounds weird but when I take a pinch between my fingers, the Grapefruit does not taste so good as when I snuff directly from the back of my hand. I also use a lot of St Clements and Toast and Marmalade. It’s funny but the “sweet” stuff does not appeal to me so much anymore as in the beginning, when I first started using favoured snuff. Any of the other members share this “craze” ?

Wilsons Lemon Grove is a nice light lemon with an almost herby aftertaste. Excellent snuff when I’m looking for something citrus.

I guess that I must be a citrus addict! I’ve just checked the citrus snuff I have in regular use here. F & T Seville Gawith Hoggarth Dry Orange MacCrystals Mild Lemon Samuel Gawith Mandarin Toque Grapefruit “ ” St Clements Wilsons Lemon Grove “ ” Strasbourg “ ” Tangerine “ ” Thyme & Lemon
Pieter, I recently read that in the 1890’s some native workers in the Kimberley mines added sun dried naartjie peels to tobacco to make snuff. An alcohol tincture of the peels might make another uniquely South African snuff like your marula cream.
I’m hooked on SP’s. Maybe its the citrus? I love that burn…
I too snuff little apart from SPs, I have 5 in rotation at the moment, along with some McC Mild Lemon, which is delicious!
i think so … the SP’s are so clean and citrus-y … but along with them I go with Lemon Toast, Lemon Grove, Lime and Toast … and Strasbourg.
I STILL get a “floral” scent from strasbourg… not so much of the citron or bergamot…
agreed, primarily floral in strasbourg … but not as much as other florals/perfumes … and for whatever reason, i get the nice “freshness” i typically get from some of the SP’s.
Some citrus flavours work very well with tobacco indeed. Out of the prevailing aromas at the Sharrow Mill the one I’ll always associate with that hallowed establishment is bergamot. Some users of S.P detect orange or pear and in that respect they are right for the bergamot is derived from the peel of Citrus Bergamia, a hybrid, grown in Reggio-Calabria in Italy. According to C.W Shepherd it is exclusive to those sunny climes. I’ve never wearied of Sharrow’s S.P and never will.
IMHO the BEST SP snuff for a good balance of Bergamot and Tobacco flavors is WoS Gold Label. The Virginia is so good in that one…
That is a classic blend and such wonderful tobacco! Gold Label is a must .
Strasbourg has so much going on, it is hard to name all the scents and flavors. It took quite a while to pick out the Nutmeg. This one is a good example of layering. I always concentrate on this one.
Yes its very good- very complex. STRONG scent with a soapy, spicy, citrusy, AND floral character. It’ll keep ya busy for awhile!
Lots of old paraphenlia thant have lists of snuffs, as store stocks, price lists or whatnot, refer to “Violet Strasbourg”. Its often reffered to as a snuff for ladies in that literature. One document I read showed an order that George Washington made to his agent in England for various supplies, including snuff. The two he ordered were Scotch and Violet Strasbourg. I’m guessing the VS was for his wife, Martha, who was a known snufftaker as well as her husband. What I’m getting at, is that I’m pretty sure the modern Strasbourg has a strong element of violet in it, even though the only published info from Wilsons cites citron. Its one of my favorites too.
violet, i’ll buy that … so many things. and hey, even if it was for ladies … in these modern times, can’t men show their sensitive side … i think i will go and “daintily” push a couple piles in now, all this strasbourg talk …
“i think i will go and “daintily” push a couple piles in now, all this strasbourg talk …” sorry, but I thought the term was “push a couple piles OUT” ?? I could be mistaken…
