First, let me say that I am still working on this myself and I would fall under the following: * I love tobacco * I only wish to remove cigarettes * Patches, Gums, Mints or Pills do not work for me * Considered a heavy smoker (more than 2 packs a day) I thought it might be helpful to me and others that are working on this problem or have quit and want to share the success. I now have my habit down to under a pack a day and hope to remove it before the new year. Part of my own solution is just basic understanding of what is really happening as compared to what I thought was happening. Also how this forum and snuff has helped me a lot (Thank You to all the Kewl folks) I started thinking about all the forms of tobacco that I truly love, cigars, pipes and snuff and for some reason I can not place cigarettes into this list but it is just as much a part of me as my job, morning coffee, decisions & planning and even boredom. Surely this form of tobacco has taken over my life. I also starting understanding that other see that I am hooked by things they say things like: Your upset, go smoke a cigarette and calm down You can figure this out, go smoke one and come back with a solution It doesn’t help when others knew more about your habit then you realize Now I have a basis to quit. I don’t love them, they are hogging my life and other are using them to control me. Hell, I’m a slave to a habit After trying the conventional ways only to fail, I know I need a better habit to take it’s place. I also know that I do not wish to expand my current love for cigars or pipes because both are for relaxing and savoring the moment. I always enjoyed snuff but never thought of it as a replacement until recently. This is my new plan and it is working: I do not torture myself if I wish to have a cigarette I clean the ash tray and put it away afterwards and burn and incense to freshen the air I practice first trying a dose of snuff before a cigarette Snuff is great for this because you can do it anywhere and each time you move forward, you will not feel like you need to look back. I feel great about this so far because when you go from 2+ packs a day to under 1, you are making a dent and I have to say that the understanding of the habit does help beat the problem down. Hopefully anyone that reads this will have something to offer others like myself, remove the chain
I feel your pain. I never had quite as heavy of a habit (only 3/4 - 1 pack per day) but after 21 years the ‘ritual habit’ of the whole thing is really gets entrenched in your entire life. I don’t smoke during working hours because of the stigma, and even have a generally good amount of control when by myself, but when my wife is around it’s a bear. I enjoy smoking and that power of suggestion really kills it for me. Even if I tell her not to ask me about a smoke, the gentile click of the back door lets me know what’s going on and I start fiending for the sensation, even if I have something insane like Thunder Raw in my lip. It seems to be getting a bit easier as the temperatures drop because I just don’t want to be outside at 9 degrees (F). I use snus, dip, snuff, and anything else I can get my hands on to try and drop the habit. On good days I’m down to 3 - 4 smokes. It takes a while to break the habit, just keep at it.
I was smoking 1-2 packs a day and toque quit + a flu helped me quit for about a week. After the flu was gone i smoked half a cigarette and it tasted like crap so I have not smoked a cigarette since then. Only glorious snuff.
It’s easy. You just really need to want to do it. Sorry if that sounds a bit flippant, but it’s true. Snuff makes it easier. You just replace cigarettes with snuff. I quit a 30 year, pack a day habit, 6 months after starting snuff and have never looked back. Cigarettes are so uncouth. Filthy habit.
Thank You Guy’s and this route is working for me. I tried snus and didn’t like it. I also find it hard to trust a product that was created by the cigarette companies when smoking sales started to die. Something to think about
I had a problem with snus being enough in the beginning, but now it’s really helping me a lot. At first I was reading that some people (and the US snus manufacturers recommendation) only leave their portions in for 30 min, and that just wasn’t doing it. I tried Thunder Raw which was supposed to be like some sort of nic hammer, and it wasn’t doing it either. Then, I forgot and left the portion in and I was swimming in a little while. I figured out it took 45 min to 1hr before I started to really feel it, and then I came across this chart today. I’m sure someone has posted it elsewhere, but it really confirmed that the uptake on snus is slow, but really awesome. So, I’m starting to get into a routine of snuff for my quick(ish) fix, and throw in a snus at the same time. By the time the snuff is waxing, the snus is waning and I’m actually satisfied. I’m going to have to switch to smaller portions though as I don’t want my nic needs to go up beyond where they already are. I can smoke a pack of menthols during a 3 hour stretch at a bar and be fine, but an hour with a raw portion in there and I feel half drunk. Here is the study: http://ntr.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2012/05/13/ntr.nts123.full Here is the really cool chart:
It was snus and snuff that did it for me. I used to use snuff alongside cigarettes for years, then I discovered snus and stopped smoking almost instantly, it helped that I wanted to quit smoking too. Now I have a happy balance of snuff and snus with the odd pipe now and then.
With snuff and snus I quit cigs with relative ease. Now this was with strong Swedish snus and strong snuff. American snus is awful IMO , it is the only tobacco product I have ever thrown in the trash. When I first quit I would still reach for smokes in my car as a reflex action but after about a month I did not even give them a second thought. Keep at it and you will find what you need to quit.
I’m doing quite well with the snuff. Only problem area is the morning start. Is there a snuff that goes well with coffee? A breakfast snuff?
@MattheFox Sam Gawith Black Coffee goes very well with coffee (odd that lol) I find toasts go nicely with coffee or natural snuffs, unscented good old plain tobacco, taxi red is brilliant with coffee first thing in the morning.
@MatteFox I agree w above but have to say that SG Black Coffee is frankly, to date, the ONLY real coffee flavored snuff bar none (Well, waiting on Cafe11). It does pack a little wallop and I think it has a bit of a pick me up effect. Of course that last could be a touch of wishful thinking on my part too…
Thank You Guy’s and this route is working for me. I tried snus and didn’t like it. I also find it hard to trust a product that was created by the cigarette companies when smoking sales started to die. Something to think about
Have you tried any Swedish snus at all? It’s a whole different league than the snus made by the U.S. cigarette companies. If you want to get off the smokes snus can help supply the nicotine you crave. Breaking the habit aspect of cigarettes is still the hardest part.
@crullers Only American snus. Right now as I am typing I am drinking a fine whiskey and snuffing without a urge for a smoke (cigarette that is) I would reward myself with a bowl or cigar but I don’t want to weaken myself
@MattheFox I found I needed to avoid any smoking, pipe, cigar or cigs, for about a week before I could safely smoke a pipe without starting the cig cravings. Swedish/Danish snus and snuff got me off the cigs.
I quit with snuff, and I smoked as much as you. It’s been two years now. Here was my method: 1. Purchase a very high nicotine snuff- Rooster or Bruton for me- to use straight or mix with something you like. Many of these designer snuffs are namby-pamby in the nicotine department. 2. Don’t snuff when you feel like having a snuff. Instead snuff when you feel like having a CIGARETTE, and shove as much up there as it takes to satisfy the urge. 3. ALWAYS have plenty of snuff. Never run out. If you do, you’ll be at the gas station in about 20 seconds. Well, me anyway.
I would like everyone that has posted a comment here (because I really mean this) to go look in a mirror and say… "I am a Kewl (cool if your not southern) I helped someone today!!! I really mean it. The understanding that you folks had to over come the problem to reap it’s reward is truly… “KEWL”
It was swedish snus that kicked it for me, specifically General Ekstra Sterk, Skruf Extra Stark and Oden’s Extreme to start with.
"Gotta think on a positive note on anything that uses “Odin” in it
@MattheFox Oden’s snus is my favorite then prob General, its half the price of General and more vitamin N than you will ever need (the extreme ones anyway), its tastes bloody good too, and you do feel like a God when you use the extreme ones
Just don’t lite up. A minute at a time, then and hour, then a day and if you fail try again.Cigarette smoking is physical and psychological, The nicotine can be replaced with snuff, the action has to be worked on. I just use my pipes for the mouth fixation. Works for me. I never did quit ,I am just not a slave to cancer sticks. I enjoy one ,3 or 4 times a year. I love my nicotine!
@Skell18 I am a true pagan and feel Godlike with every breath I take which is a compliment to all men for we were created in their image or we created them to project our inner most feelings Either way, anyone that would provoke a God’s name in a product means that they seen it as something we must try to be close to them I am going to have to try it! Thanks
@basement_shaman As always, you are the “Kewlest”
Snus (Swedish) and snuff worked for me too. I started out with the strongest I could find and then worked down to the mini white kind, which are pretty mild, but still just the thing first thing in the morning. I’d actually like to try a pipe, but I daren’t. Good luck with quitting!
My neighbor is becoming my new champion for quitting and doesn’t know it… It is a brisk day here on the Island with gusts up to 40mph. She lives in a rental and my guess is that there is a no smoking clause in her lease because she is out on the back porch huddled in a corner to smoke a cigarette. It reminds me of what extent you might go to just for the blast of vitamin N

I also have the body of a God- BUDDHA
@basement_shaman I am starting to believe you are right that once cigarettes are no longer a addiction, having one or two every once in awhile isn’t a issue. Working hard to get to that point. Want to thank Everyone for all the advice!!!
@MattheFox it is a gradual process, like @basement_Shaman said don’t feel bad if you do have a ciggy once in a while, you will eventually reach a point where you don;t want one or have one and cannot stand the taste and feeling of it, happens quickly with some, takes longer with others but it will come.
Not gonna risk it.
when you haven’t smoked in a while you’ll realize how gross cigs smell.
I was a heavy cigarette smoker. When I moved to pipes the one thing I noticed was that the occasional cigarette hit me instantly like a ton of bricks. The point to this is that pipes and snuff supply a bit of nic over a long time, cigs are nic bullets and to quit them and still be happy requires lowering your nic tolerance.
At the rate that I am going with snuff, I believe the smokes will be gone before the end of January. I hope other that are trying to quit get a boost from this thread
The great thing about stopping with snuff is that you have an extremely high chance of staying stopped, which NRT can not compete with. You are keeping the nicotine, associated alkaloids and a tobacco ritual in your day to day life, plus snuff is actually pleasant. Cigarettes kind of brainwash you to think they are, but actually they are God awful. Just make sure you take enough snuff - pea sized pinch whenever you feel the craving and you WILL quit.
@Abraxas I completely agree. I haven’t put much thought or effort into it with snuff. I just kept reaching for snuff instead of cigarettes, and the snuff just took over. The cigs are gone now and I only smoke one pipeful a day. That took only about three months. NRT didn’t work at all for me.
And that’s the best way to do it, just use it when you would have a smoke and let it work it’s magic. I used snuff for years but smoked mostly and when the bans came in in the UK I was surprised how easy it was to switch from part time to full time snuff use. NRT is hopeless because it doesn’t have the alkaloids that are probably 50% of the battle. I had a cigarette on Christmas day, keeping my daughter company in the garden - the only place my wife now allows it - and it was terrible. I smoked about a quarter of it and threw it. I can’t believe how hooked I was on the things and how little desire I have for them now. Even smoking an occasional pipe or Cuban is getting rare for me now. The last Havana I only half-smoked. The thing with snuff is that it requires so little will-power in the transitional stage. Sorry, I’m preaching now :-@
I look forward to removing cigarettes and have refrained from pipes or cigars until this is resolved but I must say, I could never give up cigars or an occasional bowl . Oh… Preaching is a good thing @Abraxas
Another tip is to take snuff before you need the cigarette. I found that if I waited for the cig craving, taking snuff would relieve it but only weakly and for less time. I first realized how easy it was to quit when I got my first big snuff order and spent the whole day trying new snuffs. Having snuff going in and out constantly made me forget all about smoking. In other words, I learned to preempt the cravings.
@Xander That’s the problem I’m having right now. Cigarettes are just BAM! HAVE SOME NIC! While the others take a little while to build. If I start with a cig in the morning, it screws up my rhythm. If I start with snuff/snus I can get into the plan your nic needs cycle fairly well.
@Xander I am going to try this tomorrow morning. My 2 biggest problem areas are the morning coffee and if I have drinks. I can stop the evening drinks but you would not want to be around me without my coffee fix lol
yeah for me with snuff I have to anticipate the cravings. If I pinch before the craving really starts I’am golden. With cigs you can wait till it is killing you and they’ll work. With snuff it still works but not as fast. What I’am saying is with snuff the timeing is diffrent. Want to add I didn’t plan to quit the cigs. After a while they just feel off the rotation because they suck. Like I could smoke a cig or have something that is actualy good.
When I first tried snuff and snus it was to get off cigarettes but I really did not think it was going to work. To my surprise though the combination of the two really took away any cravings for smokes and also provided the necessary distraction to keep me from reaching for smokes in times of boredom or stress.
The herbal remedy does work to stop smoking tobacco. Lobelia being the major player mixed with equal parts coltsfoot herb and mullein leaf. Reducing the lobelia herb over time until it is not in the mix. The only thing is the herbs when burned have that familiar smell associated with a well known controlled substance. The mullein and coltsfoot help repair your lungs, the lobelia is a nicotine substitute.
I have seen that herbal remedy work wonders.
@basement_shaman So if someone smoked mullein & coltsfoot, the smoke would actually help heal your lungs?
certainily dilates the bronches and helps get the crap out.
Something to think about while I snuff & have some drinks
I used to be able to quit cold-turkey quite easily … until I had kids. My most recent quitting has involved several types of nicotine replacement. Don’t discount the patches as long as you use them in combination with something that can give you a ‘hit’. The patches are good in the background to reduce overall desire for nicotine. I used the patches to generally reduce the need and then the mouth spray, and now also the snuff, for a hit when i feel like it. Now I’ve eliminated the patches and I’m just using the spray and snuff. I also don’t like the gums and mints. And I also tried snus but really didn’t like it. I’ve actually found the mouth spray to be excellent. It was hard to get used to because initially it feels like spraying burning acid in your mouth. However, once you get used to it, it’s brilliant for delivering a hit of nicotine. In fact, some mornings I’ll start with 4 sprays and it is pure bliss when it hits. Note, however, the instructions suggest no more than 2 sprays in one hit and 4 sprays probably delivers much more than you’d get with a cigarette, so I wouldn’t generally recommend this approach. >:) The snuff is also good for delivering a hit and has much more character than the mouth spray. The mouth spray is pretty bland and clinical whereas the snuff is probably delivering other chemicals found in tobacco, in addition to the nicotine. Snuff is much cheaper than the mouth spray too. The spray is much cheaper than cigarettes in this part of the world. This has worked for me, but i’d say it’s a very individual thing - find what works for you. I’m pretty happy with the mouth spray and snuff and I quite like knowing I can still get a nic hit whenever I want without having to have a cigarette. As others have noted, you seem to get to the point where the smell of a cigarette actually turns you off. With these other nicotine sources, I suspect I could probably have a cigarette or two without actually falling off the wagon. Good luck.
Each to their own but I never got on with NRTs. Probably because they’re expensive and no fun at all.
NRTs never worked for me either. I tried the patch on different occasions to find that it increased my habit. The gum totally sucked for me as well as their nic mints. I did find the mini mints useful as a quick fix but damn, they are expensive. I also used the ecig (Blu) They have a vanilla that is very tasty but they don’t fit the bill either. I am not trying to remove tobacco, just cigarettes and it might be what added to my problem until being on this site and finding that snuff can satisfy my urges. Thank You to all you fine folks!!! I just bought some “Superior” by Swisher because I read it had a good vitamin N hit and it doesn’t have a fragrance (100% tobacco) and I am trying what @Xander suggested by starting snuff before I get urges. Hoping everyones advise not only continues to help me but others that are still on the cig hook
I decided to enter what I am calling phase ll. No more cigarettes in the house period! I moved my smokes to the gameroom which is not a bad place but being detached from the house will add to my thoughts of not wanting to go there in the winter
Why not go all the way and flush your cigs down the toilet? That’s what I did as it felt I was totally committed to giving up those vile cancer sticks. Apart from a couple of hitches at the start, I’ve never smoked since. That was 3 years ago. I despise cigarettes now. The smell is revolting and the couple of occasions when I did have a cig, the taste was horrendous and the smell sickening.
I’m not ready for that yet
You are you know even if you don’t think so. Just start hating cigarettes and every time you smoke one visualise your tar filled black lungs infected with cancer. Constantly programming your brain with anti-cigarette self-talk and using snuff for the cravings, you will rapidly cease this life destroying habit. Sorry, I know I sound like an annoying reformed smoker but that’s what comes from constantly telling yourself how disgusting smoking is. It’s just about changing your perception of cigarettes and with constant self-talk you can do this within weeks. You have to be 100% dedicated and having cigarettes in the house is a sure fire way of failing.
NRT might work if they were more flexable instead of a one sizes fits all. Tapering the levels of nicotine does work. Which is one reason snuff or snus or chew is good for quiting. You can slowly lower your levels of nicotine uptake by using less untill the withdraw doesn’t bother you.
@SnuffySnuff Actually I appreciate everyones experience and hope they continue to provide them. I have been told by many of my friends that they can’t believe that a person like myself couldn’t change anything that I wanted to. I have been smoking since Barney & Fred did cigarette commercials. I consider myself a wimp in this area and I started quitting just days before this thread. 2.5 packs to .9 pack is good for me but completing the removal in another couple weeks is the goal
I wish you the very best of luck. You’ll be so happy when you’re no longer enslaved by cigarettes and your health will rapidly improve.
@MattheFox quitting is a very personal experience, what works for some doesn’t work for others. The main thing is you take it ar your own pace, if you feel the need for a cigarette then have one, its not the end of the world, if cutting them down gradually is your thing then do it. You will reach a point where you won’t smoke any and the snuff or snus or whatever you’re using replaces the cigarettes entirely.
think of the cool pipes and snuff you can buy with the money you save!
More like, what extra bills can be paid. This world is getting tough
@MattheFox I did cold turkey in the beginning of August. After 30 years of heavy smoking. I think it was one of my best decision in my life, and I can tell you, it wasn’t too hard. Be a little bit more confident. Snuff will help.
@Matthefox I am in the same boat, looking forward to my own revalation
I hand rolled mine at the end. They look professional and could do it while driving. It became a real inconvenience . Carrying the tobacco getting the papers out folding then just right, applying the right amount of pressure rolling it,then right before i lick the glue strip the damm thing would break in half. Then I start over. I cut back alot since I just didn’t pull them out of a pack and lite up. Now I can smell a smoker from a great distance even though I smoke a pipe now.
Something that helped me was replacing my ever present Zippo with a snuffbox. I found that I unconsciously toyed with my lighter and when I quit smoking and stopped carrying it “something” was missing. I didn’t put 2 and 2 together until I bought my first snuffbox. I have a friend that carried a bic pen in his hand for months, just to have something to do with his hand besides hold a cig. I guess I can sum up the whole post by saying do something with your hands.
Isn’t it funny that a stupid cigarette plays on the mind so well that it takes looking at every aspect of it’s association to us. Glad I am quitting. Already noticed that my fingers don’t yellow by the end of the day
persistence is the key to try again.
Taxes just went up on tobacco by .50 another reason to rid yourself of them. I heard in Maryland that they plan on tacking another $1.00 to this in a couple months
If Camel has their 75 cent off per pack deal going, I can get them under $4. I paid $8 for a pack at a little shop in Baltimore. That was insanity.
Here in the UK cigarettes range from about £5.50-£10.00 ($12-$20) a pack depneding on brand and where you buy them, Marlboro prob weigh in at a good $14-$15 a pack depneding on where you buy them, over £10.00 at motorway service stations! I am glad I quit as I have saved soooooo much money and snuff, snus and pipe baccy last waaaay longer than a packet of fags did.
Enjoyed my first 1/2 pack day and working on keeping it going. Even had a couple of drinks without the urge to smoke Everyone has been a great help
Well done mate! I hope you realise how significant that half pack is - in the flesh, honest to goodness proof of snuffs capacity to kill those cravings. Just try a whole day where all you do is take a massive couple of pinches when you want to smoke and you will be there. It sounds like that half pack is habit/ritual based - the mental aspect of smoking - as you couldn’t have done it otherwise. This is from a two pack of marboro reds a day, plus cigars AND a pipe addict. Best thing I ever did was buy a nice snuff box and used that to cover the ritual side. Draw those pinches out, anticipate them, take the short break you take with cigarettes but use snuff: that switch-off from the job, the chores, the whatevers and you’ve got it beat. BUT: If you creep back up to a full pack or two, if you get pissed off with snuffing, if you just need to smoke - do so with no apologies to anyone, especially us. Sometimes people feel like they have to explain, you don’t. This site is full of people who have been there - and it’s hard. All thru my stopping period I said if I need a smoke I would have one, no guilt, no bullshit, my business. I have no idea why it helped me but the amount of days that that kept me off the smokes was unreal and all the time snuff was doing its thing. No rant intended
I think like most, I toyed with quitting and would try the latest, greatest only to find it wasn’t for me but with snuff it becomes natural and the pleasure of the different snuffs makes my nose crave for them as my stomach would cherry cheesecake lol The natural approach that most had used is the trick for me
I think one of the hardest things about quiting anything is that thought of this is the end of this. So saying I won’t freak out if I have one or two or three…, removes the finality of it.
I honestly believe that when you try to make demands on yourself, you ultimately fail just as when you acknowledge a problem, you start to work on a solution that does not have demands in it. For me it is the support of all the great people in this forum with insights to things that I alone might never thought of
One of the great things about using snuff to help stop smoking is that the discovery of a new scent or different type of snuff is more than enough to keep variety in the experience, and your mind of smoking. Now I try and match snuses with snuffs for different experiences, I can honestly say that at no time do I feel the need for a cigarette especially when I have an Oden’s Extreme in my lip and a nose full of Dragun, enough taste and scent there to last you a week
If you are someone that is following this thread to help you reduce or quit cigarettes, you might want to add some spearmint to your snuff. It helps keep your head clear and has other benefits.
@MattheFox get some WoS Country Mint or Crumbs of Comfort, best spearmint snuffs I have ever had, if you want a extra menthol kick, got for the Extra CoC or Prime Minister, all brilliant!
@Skell18 I got a small snuff grinder and can now add spearmint to any of my snuffs. It works great
I must be doing great, my wife is talking about repainting the house lol
I noticed on this thread & a lot of others that most used more snus than snuff to quit
Chasing the dragon may be a fool’s errand, but if it leads to a less dangerous journey, I’d rather be the fool. The dragon is in the snus.
absolutely right, @Dogwalla! Snus will really fill in the holes and tween snus and snuff, hopefully the cigs take a back seat. i’m going thru it right now (again) …
snuff works untill my allergies kick in then it’s snus time. The thing is the longer I use snuff the less allergies I get. So when I first started snuffing I had to smoke a few cigs a day because my nose just wouldn’t take that much snuff. The nic wasn’t the problem it was if you sneeze that much and you’re clogged up it’s hard to snuff.
I understand the snus but I just don’t care for it or dip. I’m under 10 smokes a day and it keeps getting smaller. It is nice to hear that so many that do like it found that it gets them over the hump. Anything that removes cigarettes has got to be a major plus
@MattheFox have you tried proper Swedish snus? Not easy to find around these parts, but there is one shop in north Wilmington I buy from. He only has one brand. Before that I bought onlne, but PACT slowed me down. Anyway, its a world apart from American snus. The locator shows a few places near you. Annapolis, Easton, and Harrington, DE. http://www.generalsnus.com/Account/LogOn?ReturnUrl=%2F#searchPanelAnchor
If I didn’t huff and puff, when I huffed and puffed; I still be huffing and puffing. All things come to there end! It was those last ten years I wanted to avoid. Just my luck I will live
I think one of my biggest fears isn’t cancer as much ending up with COPD. I’ve seen a lot of older folks with it and they look very unhappy. Since I cut back, I lost my morning cough and congestion. I’m trying the nicotine mini mints today to get me past the morning smoke. Seems to be working and once I am fully motivated the snuff lust carries me well during the day. @Xander Thank You & I will look into it
@MattheFox I agree. It’s not that they’ll kill me if I smoke them that bothers me. It’s more how I feel day to day that bothers me. I really like how when I run my lungs don’t hurt, that’s awesome. Edit also really like the way I now know how bad cigs actualy smell.
The hardest part of replacing cigs with snuff is getting over the ritual of drawing smoke into your mouth and stepping outside for a bit. Lately I’ve been smoking a pipe and it’s really helped with that, if you’re comfortable with continuing to smoke tobacco without inhaling.
I have a nice collection of pipes & humidor full of fine cigars, both that I have been refraining from because of the smoke. Cigarettes to me are like a dog and treats, once it is finished they look for the next one so I’m not taking any chances right now. Once cigarettes are firmly behind me I’ll experiment with enjoying a relaxing smoke. I am glad it is helping you and have heard of others success with pipes and cigars What ever makes you stop is the ticket to buy
Im on day 8 without the cigs today has been the first easy day mornings are the worst just loads and loads of different snuffs and the odd snus max 3 snus aday.
Mornings are probably my hardest portion of the day but snuff is working and I am not fighting real hard to push myself since an angry moment could be regrettable for my position.
Mornings are probably my hardest portion of the day but snuff is working and I am not fighting real hard to push myself since an angry moment could be regrettable for my position.
I honestly feel the opposite, a pinch of snuff right when I get out of bed obliterates the early-morning fuzzy-headedness, while a cigarette always made me feel kind of tired.
I am down to about 7 smokes a day and have never been happier. Trying a little harder this weekend
Awesome! Keep up the good work! As for me, after smoking a pack a day for years, I now have no interest in cigarettes. Don’t get me wrong, I love the act of smoking, but cigarettes are a poor means of enjoying a smoke. They taste awful, they smell terrible, they add a feeling of edginess and discomfort to the feeling of euphoria I get from the nicotine, and they’re bloody expensive! This is why I started smoking a pipe recently. It tastes great, smells awesome, gives me a great, mellow, nicotine buzz, and is noticeable cheaper! Plus, I get to enjoy the act of smoking! Now I frequently accompany my wife down to the garage for a smoke, but she has her cigarettes and I have my pipe!
I’m four months cigarette free after nearly forty years, 20-30 Marlboros a day. I only used snus to quit and am an avid snuser now. I did buy a couple of “nickel” cigars last week, but other than that quick and enjoyable splurge which I may do again, I feel free from the need to smoke. I will say that I did not pressure myself at all when I transitioned from cigs to snus, a nothing ventured nothing gained attitude and shortly found that good snus was a much greater pleasure than cigs. I did miss the nic hit from the cigs when I would wake up, but i just used two portions at first and weened myself from the heavier double nic hit. Be easy on your self and don’t buy into the drama, enjoy your snus and it will become easier to avoid the cigs. I am doing my best to not be judgmental in regards to smokers, but they stink! lol
Absolutely right. The weird bit for me was the distinct stages; the first was pain, the second I was fine as long as I kept the snuff going in regular large amounts, the third I never expected or thought would or could happen to me - simply forgetting about cigarettes. That’s only really happened in the last couple of years - since quitting cigs in 07 - but it’s like being back as I was before cigarettes. The good thing is that stage two happen as soon as you get into the habit of taking a good hit of snuff when you get the craving, stage three is just pure bonus.
I am almost there. The morning smoke is the most missed. I force myself to get dressed and smoke outside which for me, thankfully is more of a pain than the nicotine fix
as I’ve said before I never meant to quit the cigs it just happened.
Having already kicked the ciggy habit, my next quest is the pipe. That will be like night/day compared to the nails.

You’re so right! I LOVE the act of smoking. That’s what I truly missed about cigarettes (the mind quieting moments of contemplation that they allowed while blowing smoke rings). I hated the taste of cigarettes, hated about 1/2 of how they made me feel (light headed, a little nauseous, and mildly uneasy), and hated how expensive they were. The pipe tastes amazing, makes me feel sublimely relaxed, and (excluding the cost of pipes) is much cheaper!
I stopped using my pipes & cigars first feeling that they would keep me on the hook for the smoke
Someone told me years ago that quitting smoking is the easiest thing in the world, because you’re only cutting out one cigarette … the NEXT one. At the time I was pretty convinced the guy was talking out of the wrong orifice, but now I think there is a bit of sanity in his statement. If I get a craving, what is that craving for? Do I actually need nic, or am I actually hungry/thirsty/low on oxygen (just need a couple of deep breaths). If it’s nic, will something else do instead? Snuff? Electric cig? OK, that’s the end of that particular craving … I started slipping a little this weekend and the smoking crept up a bit, but I realised that was laziness really. It was easier to have a cig than quench the craving “properly”. Another thing that seems to help … drink more water
With snuff, your other stuff and will and the support here you have all the tools to quit. You’ve just got to do it now and see it can be done this way and see the relief it has been to all who have done it. A lot a people mention taking lots of alternative nic for the first while until you get over the intial smoking quit and feel the progress and I fully agree.
