Christmas Snuff Presents

I was lucky this year and got a couple of nice snuff presents. A nice rosewood slide top snuff box, which I am using quite frequently and I am reserving for schmalzer. The second present was this mint copy of the Snuff Shop by John Arlott, which I believe a few others on here have also? I was amazed at the condition, it has no dust jacket but its like a brand new book other wise. It was an ex library book and if you look at the library card inside you can see why it is on such good condition; checkd out 6 times since 1974. Once in 76, twice in 80 and 81 then finally in 1999 before being discarded sometime in the last ten years! Obviuosly not many snuffers using the library in Kent. Its a great read and recommend any one to pick it up. I think this copy came in under 10 pounds so it isnt too expensive and there are plenty of used copies on Amazon.

Is that one of those snuff boxes from the WoS website? If so how is it, I was thinking of getting the Tom Buck one.

I think its the same make, but its from snuff store. They have a heart on the back which I think is a symbol for the maker. Its a great box really tight lid. A little bigger than the Patrick Collins boxes, and all the better for it. Very happy with it.

@9inch, I have a similar box and although a bit to big for my everyday use (3 inches x 2 inches x 3/4 inch deep), I find it useful when I go on short vacations. For my use, it holds about a week’s snuff. It seals 100% and it’s a beautiful box.

Hope you enjoy the book. It certainly appears to be in mint condition. Arlott praises the longevity of the Haymarket shop, citing commercial competence as the mainstay. Famous last words for in just seven years after publication the Imperial Philistines who bought the snuff rights and paid for the shop closed it down. “Obviuosly not many snuffers using the library in Kent.” On the contrary, it could be that all the other library users (possibly excepting six borrowers) had purchased their own copies due to being inveterate snuffers and had no need to borrow. Interesting that the book was borrowed on the 26th April 1980, returned and then borrowed again the very next day. Also curious is that despite a one-in-twelve chance four of the six date stamps are for the month of April. Perhaps if a bored statistician reads this they can calculate whether that is significant. Finally, it is hoped that in wartime the librarian would have better aim with a rifle or bomb sight than with a date stamp. (With all that waste of public paper it was no wonder rates were so high.)

@PhiliS thanks for the comments Philip. I certainly have enjoyed the book. Your knowledge of the history of snuff is always insightful. Have you ever thought about writing a book of your own? I know you would be able to move a few copies on here!

"Have you ever thought about writing a book of your own? I know you would be able to move a few copies on here! " As far as British snuff manufacturers are concerned all the best books are already in print. If you don’t have them then the following items might interest you. ‘Wilson’s of Sharrow - The Snuff Makers of Sheffield’ by Mark Chaytor ‘Kendal Brown: The History of Kendal’s Tobacco and Snuff Industry’ by James Dunderdale. Substantial sections of each book comprise tedious company history, but there is enough general snuff information to warrant their acquisition (especially as gifts paid by someone else.) Another good buy (if you can still get it) is the booklet ‘The Manufacture of Snuff’ by J&H Wilson Ltd. Other posters recommend snuff related books too.

There are two copies of the Wilsons book on Amazon and the seller wants £141! Too rich for my blood.
