Choosing snuff when you were a raw n00b.

The way I chose my snuff flavors when I was just starting out, was to choose fragrances I don’t mind wearing. I figured if I liked the smell, I’d probably like the snuff. How did you decide when you were just starting out?

I just went for what jumped out at me, such as F&T’s Old Paris (great tins!) and WoS’s Lemon Grove (nice name and the idea of a lemon snuff appealed to me). Now it’s not much different but I just check some reviews before buying.

I first bought a selection of snuffs that caught my eye in G Smith & Sons - McC’s O&G, GH Strawberry & J&H Wilson’s SP #1. Then, I discovered this site and Snuff Reviews and ordered snuffs that had positive reviews, starting with F&T and Toque.

For some reason I thought I would like florals when I first started. I couldn’t stand them. I also picked a lot of menthols. The one snuff that I chose back then that I still love to bits is McC’s Raspberry.

Before I found snuffhouse, I ordered from pipesandcigars.com. I asked them what to start off with and they recommended ozona. That’s what I started with and I think it worked out great! If i knew I could get scotches at winn dixie and had I started with those, it probably would have been a short snuffing career and I’d probably still be smoking.

I started on my old bottle of Smith’s Lemon and read this site and others while it ran lower and lower. Finally I got the courage to put an order into Nicotine Rush. I got a variety of brands. I got what seemed to be popular thinking it was a good place to start, or things that seemed suited to beginners: Ozona President, Wilson’s Rum & Blackberrry, QWS Smoker’s Blend, Dholakia medicated, GH Fleurette, can’t remember what else, but just a few to start with. After that I tried to get 2 or 3 from each company and just follow my nose from there.

My first snuff order from Mars Cigars in 2006! Time flys. My first order was a medium tin each of McChrystal’s Clove and Wilson of Sharrow Rum and Blackberry to see if I liked the sensation/scents. After that, I started ordering whatever sounded good, or I had heard was good. Still a noob, but I think I’ve got my ordering process down. One day, I’ll find the Ω snuff, and after that, I think I’ll keep buying whatever I have. By the way, Ω is omega, just had to try typing it to see how it looks now that I’ve learned that it’s included in my new keyboard layout. I got surprised when I saw that by default I can type Ω, µ, €, £, and ¥ without having to go to the character map.

My first order was a couple of cans of Toque thrown in with a snus order. Roderick had sent me a couple of samples several weeks before so I was comfortable with the brand, then I just picked ones that sounded good. Original, Pom and Natural. The last two are still on my top 5 list.

I still have half of my 25gr tin of WOS Honey Menthol of a year old order from My Smoking Shop. (i dont know how i managed to use the first half because i cant even remember my last pinch of it ) and i think the tin will stay like this for a very long time…

I went to my local tobacco store that carries a little bit of snuff and bought what they had! Wilsons Spearmint Poschl Gletscher Prise Then I was in New York and found: Lotzbeck Vanille Poschl Ozona Orange Poschl Ozona Cherry Poschl Ozona Spearmint Poschl Ozona Raspberry Then Mars Cigars, my first mail order: F&T- Old Paris McChrystals- Original & Genuine Bespoke- Gin & Tonic WOW…G&T was an eye opener and then…

I got 2 tins w/ a snus order and then I bought 2 American Scotches locally, and then ordered a McCrystals sampler pack. It was good to understand the different sensations. I think it’s important to introduce several different companies even if you limit your initial foray to a small number of trial tins. The base tobaccos that are used, or maybe even the method of processing creates the snuff and some might not agree with you. I found that many from a particular company, though they taste fabulous, they leave my nose in terrible condition. Everyone is different and perhaps others have discovered this too. It might have turned me off if I had only tried a few from that company. I’ve seen the word cloying used often in snuff reviews/descriptions. If this happens to you try a different brand or even region before you give up.

@bigbuyer: New York as in the city? I’ll be going back to NYC in 19 days, and wanted to ask where one could pick up some snuff. The only place I ever ran into it was at De La Concha, and they had Gawith Apricot, Ozona President, Gletscher Prise, and the fruits Ozonas. If anyone knows of a store with a kind of off beat selection, or even just one or two snuffs that aren’t so common, I’d appreciate it.

@shikitohno Not sure of the name and address, but that should not stop you. Take the subway to West 4th St Station Walk south (downtown) on Ave of the Americas. On the right side around area of 312 Ave of the Americas you will see a shop that says “Smoke”. Check on google maps at street level and you can see it. I bought my snuffs there. I use snus and I am not sure about snuff at: Shisha International 171 West 4th Street New York City, NY 10014 +1 212 229 0562 Open Hours 11a-2a M-Th, 11a-3a F-Sa ,noon-midnight Sun Shisha International, a smoke shop, specializes in international cigarettes and cigars, as well as smoking accessories! The helpful staff will patiently share their knowledge with you, make suggestions according to your taste, and may even let you sample some flavored tobaccos. Open late to cater to the bar crowd, and if you cannot find your brand of smokes here, then you probably cannot find it in all of New York…quote from the net. There are a few small “smoke shops” in the that area, they used to be “head shops” or are selling Hookahs. You should go here it is an experience. And you never know exactly what you will find. FYI, lots of great food and sights on a warm Summer’s night.

I just started with things that I thought I would like the scent. In the beginning I thought I would like plain snuffs because I like Cope and stuff like that. That was a mistake because it is usually vary fine and hard to use. I also got some G&H snuffs like Jockey Club and Kendal Brown that I hated. It burned too bad for being new and made me not want to try SPs or florals. So, to sum it up save the scotches and G&Hs for after you have gotten your technique down.

My first snuffing experience was Ozona Cherry. The next day I tried President and a day later decided to take the big leap and bought the Garrett Scotch. I still qualify as a noob, but the Scotch and NTSU has removed the “raw” part of that status. (Incidentally, if there’s one strange person lurking that would actually want more chest hair, I have extra after sampling the last two. Lol!)

Let me begin with the fact that I have been a smoker for 10 years and also dip American chew (Kodiak Mint) on an infrequent basis, or when I need a break from cigarettes. Nicotine and I go way back! I made my first foray into snuff about a month ago with the McChrystal’s sampler pack at NicotineRush.com. I discovered early on that I am not a fan of the florals. I am neutral on the menthols - I think they have a place and purpose in every snuff collection. If I wake up congested, or I over-indulge in other snuffs, a quick hit of McC’s JIP or English Menthol will clear me right up and allow me to continue with other snuffs. My second order consisted of about 8 varieties of Toque - no menthols - thanks to the sample of Whisky and Honey that Tom at NicotineRush included in my first order. I discovered that I enjoy the Toque grind more than McC’s - it is more moist and hits the nose better with less throat contact. Outside of McC’s and Toque, I have not experimented with any brands other than Rooster - as a smoker I had to get it due to its legendary nic hit - I do enjoy this snuff. I am curious what other brands Toque lovers enjoy as I am still searching for a suitable all-day snuff. I would prefer somthing with a higher nicotine content that is not quite as harsh as Rooster. Does anyone have any ideas? I must say that snuff has quickly eliminated my need for cigarettes and dip. It is truly a pleasure in which I am suprised more people do not partake. For those that are wondering, I am currently enjoying some Toque Blueberry as I am drinking a nice bottle of Pinot Noir. What a stellar combo! To top it off, my girlfriend who is more of a social smoker than anything (and also Vietnamese by heritage - born in the USA) is very accepting of my snuff usage and even partakes in a snuff or two each evening. It is fun for her to try the next “fruity” flavor. In a nutshell and as a beginner myself, I think that trying as many diverse snuffs as possible is a good idea. I am certain that more than $300 or $400 will flow from my bank account to Tom at NicotineRush before I feel like I have a found the requisite number of favorable snuffs. For obvious reasons, I am totally fine with that!

@ Mr Snuffypants: I would advise holding onto your scotch and Ntsu for the time being. Many folks come to love them after a time. Just put them away and come back when you are more experienced. If in a few months you still don’t like them, they will easily find a home with someone here. Many a snuffer is kicking themselves over a snuff they didn’t care for and gave away, only to find they loved it later. @LincolnSnuff: I find Toque Quit to be an excellent high nicotine snuff, that is not too harsh. Its only a natural tobacco flavor, but it seems to improve with some little aging too. But as a “Toque lover” I also love many Wilsons and many Bernards and all the F&Ts and…well, just about everyone has several that I must always have on hand. Most of the Wilson’s SPs, herbals or citrus ones make good “all dayers” for me. Anyway, thats a few ideas to get you started but you seem to already be on the right path by wanting to try as diverse a range as you can.
