I received in the mail yesterday from the Old Mill: Conundrum x 1 Cuba Libre ×1 Black Ice × 1 Melba Toast × 1 Greyhound × 1 Dreamcatcher × 1 Mekba Toast x 1 This being the first time to have tried Daniel’s snuff I must say I was blown away. These are, I must say, some of the finest snuffs I have had the pleasure to stuff up my nose. The grinds are perfect, nice and medium/coarse. The aromas are truly the work of a man who knows what he is doing. I cannot get enough. They are very pleasant and relaxing aromas that literally last a long time in the nose. I could easily see Old Mill becoming an American answer to SWS and Abraxas and have told @chefdaniel‌ he should get the factory going full speed, as while American Scotch is quite good, there’s nothing like waking up to Melba toast in your snout. I myself am on tobacco cloud nine. For any newcomer or oldtimer to snuff, I highly recommend you reach out to Daniel and place an order .

I have to agree, jealous you have a few there I have not got to tried yet! I love a good toast and @chefdaniel‌ does some of the best. (Olde English and Pure Virginia are awesome) Looking forward to the whisky toast that’s maturing as I type i believe! The other big thing… hes a friendly person who listens to his customers… hope Old Mill does a long way

K

Cuba Libre is outstanding. Conundrum is as well.

S

Cuba Libre is my “favorite” for the moment. I just tried Greyhound and it’s delicious. As for the melba toast, I was really impressed. But I’ll need a few days to really survey them all in the appropriate manner they deserve.

D

For a Virginia toast, Pure Virginia is also hard to beat… Though I love the smokey Olde English Toast… First time a took a pinch I was immediately recalling when 30 odd years ago I walked the wheat fields with my grandfather… the smell of burnt off fields in the evening and my grandfathers pipe… Sounds poetic but very true… Wonderful English Smokiness

M

This is really intriguing. I’ve not read a single post of an adverse reaction to any of these snuffs. No issues with ease of use nor adverse effects. That’s simply amazing.

S

@Malatesta‌ well they’re simply wonderful.

D

I think my overall favorite right now is Conundrum. I could take it any time, all day long. I’ve also had Evangeline, Cuba Libre, Edible Arrangement and Conundrum Medicated. I really enjoy them all, but prefer to take them only when I have time to really sit back, relax and enjoy them; especially Evangeline which I find absolutely intoxicating.

S

Pure Virginia Toast and Conundrum are truly awesome!!! Nuff said!

Well, I have to join the chorus. I’ve just had a few spoonfuls of the Premiere. It’s excellent tobacco. The flavors are just there to season the tobacco. It’s actually quite sweet, but you don’t notice, because the sugar is nicely balanced with some of the bitterness of the tobacco. Bit of salt in it, maybe. Some sour fruit. A liqueur? All works well with that dark, rich tobacco. I’m looking forward to the others in my bundle. My next big question is: What’s his range? He’s pulled off one good trick, can he do something completely different that’s good too? We’ll find out when I open the next tin.

S

@JakartaBoy‌ all of his snuffs are unique and amazing. Im taking the Greyhound now and it is amazing. So far I have six. But I intend to have them all.

T

I have 10 or so - Mississippi Mud Southern Comfort Toast and Jelly Butternut Toast Pure Virginia Toast Evangeline Fleur de Cafe Acadia Old English Toast Premiere I have actually been able to hold back and have yet to try a few - but of the ones I have - all are good - most are great. I make a whole-hearted endorsement of the Butternut Toast ( I have been snuffing it all day today as a matter of fact ) as well as the Fluer de Cafe. The Mississippi Mud is fun, the Southern Comfort is pure Wrigley’s for the face ( in a good way ) … I enjoy Old Mill a lot.

J

Yes, it’s funny, I’ve seen Daniel’ posts since it was “Where can I get a ball mill?” so I’ve watched his efforts for a while. At the back of my mind was the thought that when people said his snuff was good, they meant “good for a beginner.” But no, they are just good. I don’t think he suffers in comparison with SWS or Abraxas. There really is some vision behind his snuff.

C

@JakartaBoy‌ That mortar and pestle was great for making enough snuff to fill my snuffbox, but bigger batches than that? Not going to happen. The new ball mill, courtesy of my guardian angel, is an ass kicking beast! I can mill 12# of leaf in two hours down to a 150 micron flour.

J

I was thinking about the word ‘vision’. It sounds a bit grandiose and Napoleonic, doesn’t it? But I think it might be a chef thing - having an idea of what you want to create and then also having a good idea of how to get there. I tried a spoonful of Conundrum after breakfast. It is indeed quite different from the Premiere, but also very good. It’s a bit whimsical and light in comparison, but good fun and different enough from any other snuff to be interesting. I haven’t even cracked open the Evangeline yet, but I’m looking forward to it.

J

I have a ball mill, a small, simple rock polisher. I’ve produced a usable product, but nothing as good as any of the basic commercial snuffs that make up my main diet. But it is much better than using a grinder. You get a much more even grind.

C

@JakartaBoy‌ It may well be a “chef thing”, going back to our apprenticeship days. Three years of hell that passed about 5% of the class. First learn the sciences. Then the techniques. After about 15 years of grinding through the process you begin to develop the ability to set the creative process in motion. Shortcuts usually equal disaster. Back then it took about 20 years to qualify for CEC (certified executive chef). I’ve no idea what that entails these days. Probably two years in school and fifty dollars. I can’t pursue the culinary arts & sciences any longer due to disability (spinal arthritis) so I channel all that energy into snuff making and pipe tobacco blending. I’ve been at it for a quite a few years, but only for my own pleasure. I just recently started sharing this stuff with others. I’m lucky to live in tobacco country. Hell, I’ve got tobacco blends curing in my shed that’ve been there since the late nineties just waiting to get ground up into snuff. I’m also close to bourbon and Tennessee sour mash distilleries so barrels are easy pickin’s, although mine are starting to fall apart. Sorry to ramble on. Glad you like the snuff. Cheers PS I built a sieving system from 400µm down to 75µm using stainless steel screens and frames made by my buddy the cedar humidor maker that lives about half a mile down the road It’s a stack of sieves attached to a rigged up paint can agitator/shaker. Got it for $20 and works like a charm. Noisy bastard, but worth the ear plug investment :))

C

Conundrum is simply amazing! Many lingering and beautiful scents in it! Everyone should try that one. Chef Daniel is a true gentleman to communicate with as well. Hats off.

C

Thank you

I’m looking forward to trying out the snuffs that were just shipped today from @chefdaniel‌!

T

Makes a change. A Brit getting jealous.

M

Old Mill snuffs are the very epitome of hand crafted, lovingly created tobacco goodness. I am astonished by their unique character. I had read about them here for quite some time before I finally contacted the Man and placed an order. If you haven’t tried them yet you should. You won’t be sorry. You’ll be wishing you had ordered the largest size.

J

Old Mill snuffs are of the utmost quality and it is obvious that @chefdaniel possesses true creative skill and knowledge for the art of making snuff. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the selections I have tried so far with my early favorites being Olde English Toast and Dreamcatcher; truly great snuffs. I can’t wait to try more.

J

@Jim agreed - Olde English Toast and Dreamcatcher have been the stand-out ones for me, too.

F

@chefdaniel makes world class snuffs of the highest quality. Period.
