Chapped Nostrils

What do you guys do about chapped nostrils (from nose-blowing, wiping off stray dust, etc.)? I’ve been using chap stick around the base of the nose a couple times a day but it’s not all that pleasant to put on and smell and doesn’t really work that great. Any tips? I’ve also tried switching to a hankie instead of TP/paper towels/tissues and they all chap me up.

I just use an oatmeal based lotion. It works for me.

Honestly, I just do my best to ignore it lol. But the more I snuff, the harder it becomes to ignore.

Switching to a softer wiper is good, but won’t help until the chapping heals. Chap stick will act as a barrier to prevent some damage, but also prevents the skin from healing naturally. Make sure it is very clean before bed, and dry. Try cleaning with a solution of water and tea-tree oil (I’ve had success here). Try a 10%-20% solution. Dip a cotton swab in the solution and clean all cracks. Then gently pat dry with a very soft (clean!) hanky. You may want to add a moistureizing solution before bed as well after cleaning, but avoid anything with alcohol or petroleum oil. You may have to cut back on snuffing, and certainly blowing/wiping until the situation is remedied. The more you disturb the healing process, the longer it will take. Once healed up, you will have learned to be gentle and realize why handkerchiefs are preffered to tissues my most snuff takers, and why softness counts

@Xander very thorough, thank you for the tips!

@PikeMopers: My pleasure. Please excuse typos, which I am too lazy to go back and fix. I had a bout of chapping this winter, trying to get ahead of Snuff Head in most tins finished.

And it even happens to me at times. I then use Vaseline (petroleum jelly), before retiring for the night.

Hmm. I don’t think I’ve had this problem yet…

Happens to me every now and again. Much less now that I use hankies only.

I use Polysporin with vitamin E before going to bed

A bit OT, but what do you do to soften your handkerchiefs? The one I got wasn’t too soft when I first bought it and putting it with the rest of my laundry and some fabric softener didn’t seem to really make it that much softer. I guess just the one I got isn’t of good quality?

@nunoH: just keep washing them, eventually they’ll soften up.

I was lucky enough to recive a bunch of black silk hankeys from my mom. I use vitiman a&d ointment for my nose and it works perfect for me.

Puff’s tissues with lotion are very nice for chap nose… an occasional squirt of saline helps too.

This only happens when I blow my nose excessively. Try not to blow as often if possible.

I’ve also noticed that, the softer the handkerchief, the less irritation is caused! And yes, excessive nose blowing was also a cause for my chapped nose :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t blow my nose at all any more! Not in a dirty way, I’ve been snuffing just SPs and I’ve found that with me they dont cause any drip at all, so I just have to dust lightly after each pinch. When I was snuffing menthols and heavily scented snuffs my nose ran like a tap, so I guess im just lucky that whats turned out to be my favourite genre of snuff as it were is the one that my body most agrees with. Now I just give my nose a good wash at the end of the day…if you wanted to know!

Same as @koba22 … Since I mostly use SPs and Toasts, I don’t get congested as much as I used to! I hardly ever have to blow my nose. I’d say I do it 2-3 times a day. Which is a far cry from when I first started- I blew my nose ALL THE TIME, and THAT’S when you start getting chapped nostrils and other nasal problems. I just take snuff, flicker my hankerchief under my nose, and move on!

I think there is a definite link between congestion, and the need to blow a lot, and menthol or flavoured snuffs. I use WoS Best SP day in, day out and never get chapped nostrils. I love flavoured snuffs but can never take more than a few pinches without feeling like I’ve got a head cold.

Same here, I think I might actually be intolerant to menthol as it just blocks me completely first sniff and makes me feel quite ill. I like citrus snuffs and have them occasionally, but only a couple of times a day and I usually snuff about once every 15-20 mins. I love WoS Best SP too, one of my favourites. In my rotation I have Toque SP Extra, McC SP, WoS SP 2, SP 100 and Best SP with the occasional pinch of something like J&H Wilsons Top Mill or SG Scotch SP…makes me sound quite boring! But I have no drip, no coughing and no sneezing, and I love the flavours so its all good for me!
