Changing Tastes

When I first started snuffing some thirty years ago, American scotches were the only snuffs available to me and Navy Plain was my favorite. A few years later, I found a store that sold Poschl, Dean Swift, McChrystal’s and Hedges snuffs. I went completely menthol crazy and pretty much abandoned the scotches. Prior to Internet shopping, I was at the mercy of the retail stores. If the store went out of business, or I relocated to a new community, I was pretty much out of luck. The first time it happened, I tried to go back to scotch snuffs, which were still available at the local grocery stores (not so much now). However, I found they no longer satisfied me, as I had become completely taken by the menthol and scents of the imported snuffs. The only ones that never really grabbed me were the schmalzlers. I tried some flasks of Bernard’s, but they never stuck with me. Now that I’ve found snuffs online and given my history of menthol/scent addiction, you would think I would lean heavily towards those types. However, I now find myself favoring the less scented or unscented snuffs. Viking Dark, Navy Plain and AO 1860 are now my daily “go-to snuffs,” and the scented snuffs are used for a change of pace. I didn’t care much for toasts before, but I have some in my MrSnuff cart (F&T HDT) and I anticipate they will land in my go- to list. I’m also revisiting the schmalzlers. I’m now curious about changing snuff tastes. How have your tastes changed over the years? What are your favorites now as compared to when you first started snuffing?

I’ve only been snuffing 3 years but in that time my tastes have changed quite often. snuffs I disliked on first tasting, some time later have become favourites. initial favourites have become disliked (esp Poschl). I think snuffing is like food. when we are children there are foods we hate. as we grow older and our palettes change, foods we hated become loved. I see this as a great thing, adding an interesting dynamic to the wonderful world of snuff.

Well, I never throw away any snuff, even if I do not like it first. Often after some time I can enjoy it. So, it seems my taste changes every day.

My tastes change every 7 to 10 minutes ,It is called rotation. I am never happy with just one type, brand or style and when you own hundreds of snuffs you never get board. Conforming to the weather and seasons they changes. I like toasts and scotches but I wouldn’t want to do them in a dry heat wave nor a schmalzlers that I reserve for cooler fall weather. Some snuffs are better in fresh air. And then there is when I get clog a medicated is on hand .Of course when you want a powerfull nicotine hit and others times just something like desert. My favorite is Black coffee,I find leaning towards Indian snuff but in the beginning Indian snuffs were taboo. Also wilsons was too dry and I didn’t get the scents now I can enjoy them. I used to detect paraffin in toque now my nose is blind to it. If I been useing strong snuff and then try a delicate scented it is insensible to my nose. Rotation is key

My tastes have not really changed. Many years ago when I first used snuff I loved the original F&T Dr JR Justice. Over the few months recently since I came back to snuff I have been experimenting - and thoroughly enjoying myself with a range of snuffs - but I find myself gravitating to the the coarser, richer snuffs. Happily I seem to have come back to snuff at precisely the right moment as Abraxas is promising more of the Premium original and Sir Johnny Scott has started producing Creme de Figue so it is like going back to the old days of the original F&T’s. I will still stock up on various Toques and De Kralingses and others as there are some great snuffs out there these days and “variety is the spice of life.” But I think my mainstays will be the new snuffs that replicate - and even exceed - the old richer types that used to be around - they are simply perfect.

I agree with pretty much everything stated above… AND I find that the snuffs I like at one time dont another, vice versa. Tastes change with the seasons, my activity level, what I have been eating/drinking. And the wonderful thing is that there truly is an option for most any situation.

I like 'em all, I’ve even grown fond of Kamal which at one time was at the top of my ‘what’s the worst snuff you ever tasted’. Except for one which I cannot tolerate, the scent is great but the effect on my poor nasal membranes is just too much…Bohica.
