Just wondering if anyone else has a cat that goes crazy for snuff. Mine has taken to jumping on my desk and attacking my snuff boxes. I recently sprinkled a tiny bit of W.E. Garrett on a piece of paper and she went nuts for it. First she sniffs it up then licks the paper. This is followed by an intoxicated state of rolling around and pawing her face. Soon after she goes bonkers and attacks the dog. Now I know this isn’t good for the animal and I assure you I don’t give her very much or let her take it often as it would probably make her sick or even be toxic. However, the few times I’ve witnessed it were quite amusing and I’m wondering if anyone else has seen a pet go after their snuff. In the military there were some guys that would give a small pinch of dip to their dogs now and then but I was reluctant to let mine have any in case it made them ill. Might this be a natural flea repellant as well? In any case, a little bit is funny but please don’t poison your pets.

S

My dads cats are always intrigued with my nose after I’ve had a pinch… never seen a cat actually take snuff though!

M

Too bad you didn’t get it on video. I wouldn’t recommend doing it again for entertainments sake though.

M

Lol, great minds think alike I guess!

M

Beginning to think the Dog licks up my spills. She does do a lot of sniffing my nose after a pinch. Same thing with my mouth if I have dip in. I think the only effect it would have on the Cat would be an ongoing Nicotine addiction. Scariest thing on earth to me would be a Cat going through a Nic fit!

C

If I come home and my kitty has on a waistcoat, he can have all the snuff he wants.

M

My cat tried to lick up some Gletscher Prise I dropped on the ground once, though I stopped her from doing it. Otherwise she ignores it.

S

I’ll try to catch it on video for youtube next time. I just hope I don’t OD the poor thing and make her sick.

C

Or kill her.

A

Ive got three but none have really expressed an interest. The older one smokes a pipe.

C

It can join Snuff Head’s cat that was seen smoking… something…

S

I used to have horses when I lived in Texas. They loved to eat Red Man Chew. Tobacco is actually good for some animals, particularly horses. It kills heart worms. Considering snuff doesn’t have all the chemicals/additives other tobacco products have, it may not be all that bad for cats and dogs. In moderation, of course.

S

I’ve mentioned this on other threads before, but my stepdad always keeps some W.E. Garrett Sweet and Mild in the horse trailer. One of our horses, Sunny, loves the stuff. If she is being skittish about getting into the trailer, he’ll grab a twig and wet it a little then dip it into the tin of garrett. He uses that to coax her into the trailer and every once in a while he will just give here some as a treat. Of course, she licks the twig it’s on, I’ve never seen her get any up her nose

C

In larger animals such as Horses and Cattle it very well may be fine. But in a small animal such as felines or canines, it would be deadly if too much was given. And too much would probably only be a little bit.

L

My cats hate the smell of snuff even through the tin. When they’re sitting on my lap and I take a pinch and a little bit sprinkles around them, they’ll take off like a cat out of hell.

R

I think that it is the menthol. My cat love McC O&G, ,mint toothpaste, gum, etc. I believe catnip is in the mint family, no?

J

Catnip does have menthol in it.

N

thats crazy u really need to film it next time if u can but give it something easy ,try not to let it get a hold of any scotches!

O

you could give the cat herbal snuff next time and definitely youtube that shit.

B

catnip is a mint. When I got my last package from mr snuff my neighbors cat (who visits everyday for lap time) was waiting on the porch and when I put the box on down to open it she was really into smelling the box. I let her smell each tin of it and she seemed to hate them all except the dholakia ganga which she couldn’t stop smell. My first cat once ate a huge pinch of red man the funny thing is I thought it would make him sick or act funny he acted like him self which actualy is a lot like spyros cat. Of course this cat got lung cancer in his old age(he was an old cat) maybe he was already smoking at that time and that is the reason he always wanted to go out side. Interestingly he hated the smell of all snuffs but liked some pipe tobacco (never ate it just smelled it)

Z

Never tried giving a cat snuff. I have dabbed some Mentholatum on the cat’s nose, though. That didn’t go over so well. And now, if I get a cold and use Mentholatum, the cat disappears.

S

Well, the only snuffs my cat seems to prefer are W.E. Garrett and FUBAR RnR. I don’t plan on poisoning my cat with nicotine, its only a rare occasion when she jumps onto my desk and helps herself. I’ll definitely have the web cam ready for the next event so you can see what she does.

B

what do you think of the RnR?

I

Funny this is brought up a few weeks ago my cat was crawling on me while surfing the web and I was snuffing some Tube Rose and my cat wanted to see what I was doing and I kinda was wondering if it could hurt him so I didnt open the tin around him. But he wouldnt leave it alone so i just let a little in the top and let the cat sniff a little, well I dont know if he will ever do that again cause he was sneezing and was rubbing his nose with his paws and kinda stumbled around. I was worried about the nicotine so I didnt let him into it again. Funny though I rember reading about a bar somewhere where the smoking bans were and the owner had his dog at the bad all the time and when the ban went into effect the dog flipped out and they couldnt figure out why until they figured out that the dog was sort of addicted to the second hand somke. cant remember where I read that but its interesting I remember the anti-tobacco nazi’s saying that ONLY humans use tobacco products but clearly they are wrong, with the horse snuffegnugen was talking about and the occasionaly feline nicotine addict.

J

I went through second hand smoking withdrawals myself some years back when the smoking laws started. Thank God for snuff or I would likely be a smoker now.

B

None of my cats even care about snuff. All three have sniffed at open tins and walked away. My stupid coonhound has a love hate relationship with snuff. She thinks she wants it, until she gets it then she hates it. A farmer I worked for as a kid raised Percherons, and had one huge male that loved BeechNut chew. He would steal it out of the farmers hip pocket if he got close enough. I learned to curse from those two.

C

Percherons are beautiful animals.

J

I’ve always liked horses, even though I freely admit I know next to nothing about them. I wouldn’t mind trying to ride again (rode one ONCE when I was 14), but seein’ as how I tip the scales at 350 lbs, I’d probably have to ride a Percheron! Funny enough, I read somewhere that draft horses make fine mounts, as long as you don’t mind taking it easy. Which is fine by me; I ain’t the daredevil type…

W

What is a percheron? Stupid thick Limey question as ever but I’ve never heard of that lol. Stefan

T

Isn’t that the leader of a Mexican bandit gang?

B

They are similar in size to Belgians, and Clydesdales, mainly used in the states for farming, or pulling loads. The farmer I worked for used them for everything, the only time he used the tractor was to cut and bale hay. Then only because it was much faster, baling hay is quite time sensitive.

J

Percherons and Clydesdales were like Amish John Deeres up by our summer place; they used 'em to bale hay too! Of course, there was nothing saying the baler itself couldn’t be gas operated. It was kinda funny to hear a big gas engine going out there and here’d be two big Clydesdales pulling the dang thing along. But hey, it worked…

B

I grew up within an hour or so of the Ohio Amish country. My grandfather bought mules and related items from them, my grandmother, mother and wife bought/buy spices and kitchen stuff from them. I’m into camping, without a RV, so non electric items are big on my list also. To get an idea what is available check this out http://www.lehmans.com/. My ideal department store. If they just carried hunting and fishing supplies it would be perfect.

B

I just bought cigars from them. Never crack though (that should say a lot about the area I’am from, one of the drug rings that got busted here in the 90’s was amish.)

J

Ha!!! I love Lehman’s. Well, never been there but I love their catalog. As for Amish drug rings, I suppose it’s certainly possible; they keep to themselves and there’s all sorts of trouble you can concoct in a closed society…our Amish neighbors in northern Michigan were kindly enough, but I certainly wouldn’t have known if anything like THAT was going on…

C

@bigmick: I was in Amish Country a few years back. Went to the Lehman’s, an awesome store. I want the damn retro appliances. Love the area, an amazing sight in summertime. Bought some Rhubarb pies, produce and trail bologna. In Wilmington, NC the tourist trolleys are pulled with rescued Amish Percherons. The trolley fully loaded is only 1/2 of what each horse can pull, and there is a team of 2 on each trolley.

B

My favorite part about it was that it raised in my mind of what effects crack would have on a barn raiseing (yeah that is what they where selling). Though my personal favorite part were the names of the perps “Abner King Stolfiz” and “Abner King Stolfiz jr”, however they where not related.

J

Oh man, or imagine a quilting bee on crystal meth! They’d be firing off king-sized comforters like a laser printer, hee hee hee…make no mistake, I have great respect for the Amish, but the mental image is just too much…

B

@cstokes, I grew up watching horse pulls, a top team could pull upwards of 13,000 pounds from stopped. I’ve seen them pull stumps that stumped a tractor. A trolley full of people wouldn’t be much of a workout for them.

B

this is about a cat not snuff. Still funny thoutgh. Yesterday I saw a cat named bob punch a squirel. I think bob the cat is a buddhist he’s always looking meditative and I’ve seen him watch as squriels ran right by him. Yesterday one of the squriels that ran by him decieded to investigate more and walked up to Bobs face. Bob got the annoyed cat look on his face and punched the squriel in the head (bob does have claws). Just further proof that all cats are weird.

D

I know my comment will be off-off-topic but I was at my girlfriend’s last weekend and I laid some Toque Quit on the back of my hand and her dog sniffed some and wow what a sight to see she was sneezing for like an hour straight (this was all done when my girl was in the shower getting ready to go out for dinner) then my girl got out of the shower and said to me “WHY IS THE DOG SNEEZING SO BAD AND WHY ARE YOU LAUGHING SO DAMN HARD!!!” and I could not talk straight for like 15min because I was laughing so hard.

T

I’m calling PETA.

K

“people eating tasty animals” ??

C

I don’t think there is such a thing as a tasty animal.

I

Amish drug ring…I learnt something today… My cat doesn’t care for snuff. She would sniff it out of curiosity and afterward give me an expression like: “yes, it’s very interesting, now go feed me real cat food”

S

I can’t sit at my desk without my cat knocking my snuff boxes over. She only wants the smokey American Scotches. The dog, however, won’t go near it.

B

ituske I had a cat that always would smell my tea and then get a disgusted look on his face and smack the mug to the ground. Now that I know about tea and how to properl brew it (no boiling of the water for green teas) I wonder if he’d take a sip now. Just reminded me of that is all.

I

@bob Your cat can smack the mug to the ground?? I don’t want to know what he will do if you got him the wrong brand of cat food…

B

Well he didn’t like eating it out of the bowl so he would toss it from the bowl unto the floor and then eat the food off of the floor.

S

Cats can do some pretty weird stuff. I had one that used to drink wine and another that played basketball with cat toys and the trash can (took me a while to figure out why all the cat toys and small items in the house kept disappearing) @bob - what’s the proper way to make green tea? I lived in Japan for 2 years and only saw it made with boiling water. Is there a better method or something?

X

Will cut in for bob: Green tea uses the “less is more” rule. Water should be about 180deg F and steep for no more than 3 minutes. The Japanese know this rule well enough. The Japanese have some fabulous green teas, but also a lot of garbage ones. The supermarket ones there I saw were mostly garbage. Sorry to hijack thread. I let a cat sniff snuff off of my fingers once after taking a pinch. He sneezed for a long time afterward.

B

Depends on the green tea but tends to be 180. As a rule of thumb if the leaves are small or bright green less temp if they are darker, rolled, or very big the temp will be a little higher. How to tell if you got it right the tea will taste right. Which for green teas means they do not taste grassy or bitter and typicaly will have a very light color. The flavour will be subtle but more complex and somewhat sweet like you already added just a tiny touch of honey. And with some chinesse green teas there will be a nice floral component which disappears if over brewed by time or temp. Typicaly at 180 there will be a medium amount of small bubbles forming at the bottom of the kettle and some steam. White teas use even less temp and time (well typical I had one that was best brewed at a low temp for 12 minutes most whites teas you want to brew for 30 seconds to a whole full minute.)

S

I had no idea there was so much involved with tea. Sounds like I’ve been missing out on some tasty stuff. Like snuff and fine crafted ales, another cultural delight seems to have been swept into obscurity by commercialism. Thanks for the info. @Xander - what part of Japan were you in? I was stationed at Yakota AFB in the 80’s. Those vending machines with iced coffee were everywhere. I was amazed at the variety of items the Japanese would sell from a vending machine. We even had beer in our coke machines on the base.

X

@ Spyro: I spent about 4.5 months in Japan (and South Korea.) Got around quite a bit: Hachinohe, Tokyo, Yokusuka, Sasebo, Iwakuni, and all over Okinawa. Too often outsiders try to use one word descriptions to decribe the Japanese, but the only single word I would use is that they are complicated. Yes, plenty of commericalism there, but ceremony/tradition and commercialism walked the same road. I suppose the same could be said of Western cultures, but the apects are different. I was just learning tea in those days. I know it pretty well now. Someday I want to particiapte in the Japanese Tea Ceremony. I would go back again, if the circumstances were right.

S

@Xander - I wouldn’t mind going back myself some day. Things may have changed since I was there but my experiences were good. I totally agree about the Japanese culture and social situation as being “complicated”. I never got into the Tea Ceremonies but I did have the privilege to experience many other facets of their society. That was the first time I’d lived in another country and I have to say that the similarities made more of a lasting impression on me than the differences. Anyway, guess we’ve drifted pretty far from the thread topic so I’ll stop babbling now.
