JC is my favorite at the moment but I cannot take this snuff without inhaling a metric ton of it. I have tried literally every taking method, distance, sniffing intensity and nothing seems to stop it from going straight to my lungs, giving me a horrible cough for the rest of the day. I want to keep using it but its far too fine. Any ideas or experience?
With a very fine snuff I would just hold the pinch in a snuff spoon (or pen cap or key) up to my nostril, then drop my jaw with my mouse closed. It creates a minor vacuum that gets snuff into the front of the nose only
Try using a box car ?(forefinger wrapped round your thumb if the term is unfamiliar) . That’s my method for dusty grinds .
Maybe it’s a moisture issue I am currently daily snuffing jocks choice and I take big pinches of it no issues
True dat , I wasn’t too familiar with the Mullins and Westley range but you piqued my curiosity . I assumed Jocks Choice was some sort of smoky toast from the name . Turns out it’s a scented contract snuff from Sharrow . In theory it should be an easy snuff to enjoy .
If it’s a moisture issue you can rehydrate but the scent can be a bit elusive with old British snuff .
If it’s a technique thing , just go back to basics in my opinion . Anatomical snuffbox , pinch , boxcar . That’s what I do . I’ve been snuffing for a long old time but my technique is a long way from flawless . I have to work at it .
Personally for a Sharrow scented snuff , I’d pour a good sized portion (perhaps 5 appleseeds worth ) into my anatomical snuffbox (back of the thumb ) , offer my nose to it and sniff fairly hard . Not like sniffing a flower , more like checking the air to see if the dog has crapped indoors . So brisk but cautious
.
From the look of the other thread of yours , you’re taking very small pinches . That might be part of it for you
I agree with the above statement, you are probably taking small pinches. Contrary to what common sense would suggest it is actually easier to take large pinches then small ones. The more snuff that enters your nose at one time the less likely it is to go into your throat and sinuses. You have to be an expert snuff taker to take small pinches of medium to fine snuffs without it hitting your throat but big pinches are easy.
It is a demigros snuff that contains – or should contain - around 12% moisture in the finished product. One wonders if your container has a mark from which the date of manufacture may be calculated. Perhaps it has simply dried out.
As others have said, gather as much snuff as you can hold between thumb and finger as little amounts are much more ‘sneezy’.
Quite a lot of information here on Jock’s Choice:
As I believe has been pointed out by others: according to Tobacco Notifications of Great Britain -
Mullins & Westley Jock’s Choice = Wilsons of Sharrow Best SP
Mullins & Westley Keen Scented = Wilsons of Sharrow S.M
Mullins & Westley Mature Crumbled = Wilsons of Sharrow Gold Label
Other than different names and a price hike for a London retailer these snuffs are identical.
It’s worth pointing out that there is only ONE remaining snuff manufacturer in Britain today and that is Wilsons of Sharrow in Sheffield. If they fold then you can say goodbye not only to Sharrow snuffs as well as the F&T and Viking ranges, but to McChrystals, Mullins & Westley and other small companies that buy their snuff from them – either resold unchanged under a different name or those where flavouring is added to the base flour from Sharrow such as the McChrystal’s range.
Should the worst happen then perhaps the micro-businesses could survive by using (as do Gawith Hoggarth) snuff flour manufactured by Pöschl Tabak. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
M&W Jock’s Choice ≠ WoS Best SP.
The rest matches are pointed correctly. There’s also a rappee in M&W range - yes, identical to WoS BBR (other names - Viking Dark Rappee, Artisan Snuff Black Rappee).
P. S. Please try M&W Jock’s Choice and tell us if there used to be identical snuff in WoS-own range. Base flour is the same as that of Best SP, but it is scented with different essential oils (the scent is quite akin to this cologne: Eau de Cologne "Troynoy", grün | Unkuri Grosshandel).
In that case Mullins & Westley Particular = Sharrow Best S.P. as Jock’s Choice contains Neroli oil. Turmeaus Delux is the same as Best S.P with an almost identical description.
Blimey, I forgot the Particular! No, it’s not Best SP (different scent profile).
Thank you this is helpful especially made taking American dry more easy for me to take. I was mostly having this problem with keen scented and best SP fixed it right up.
I wonder if there is an anatomical reason, I do lots of fine dries, and I don’t know if I can get it in my lungs if I tried. It’s a long wet route full of curves and turbulence.
